Book excerpt: New in paperback This captivating book of recollections celebrates the holiday traditions of Appalachian families as passed from one generation to the next. Based on Foxfire students' interviews with neighbors and family members, the memories shared here are from a simpler time, when gifts were fewer but perhaps more precious, and holiday tables were laden with traditional favorites. More than just reminiscences, however, A Foxfire Christmas includes instructions for recreating many of the ornaments, toys, and recipes that make up so many family traditions, from Chicken and Dumplings to Black Walnut Cake, and from candy pulls to corn husk dolls and hand-whittled toy cars.

Book River of Memories

Download or read book River of Memories written by David Lee Thompson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "David Lee Thompson has produced a caring and introspective personal account of the vanishing Appalachian culture. This way of life existed for over twelve generations, teaching its people the importance of family, community, and religion. Thompson's old home place, 'now empty and lonely,' holds 'faint whispers of what was once alive with laughter and reminiscences.' His boyhood memories of life on Bowen Creek represent the last vestiges of a time and place now nearly extinct." -Dr. Alan B. Gould, Executive Director The John Deaver Drinko Academy Marshall University "From the first pioneers who struggled west to make a home among our hills and hollows, our families have been our culture's backbone. The portrait of Appalachian life David Thompson paints is one familiar to generations of southern West Virginians. It is a history that should be saved and valued." -U.S. Representative Nick Rahall (WV) "As readers journey along in David Thompson's River of Memories, they uncover truths about themselves and gain a better understanding about life in Appalachia. This is especially true for those of us who have strong ties with its people, helping us appreciate our heritage even more." -Shawn W. Coffman, M.D. Huntington Internal Medicine Group

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Appalachian Memory: A Survivor's Tale Harvey Campbell recalls his growing up years before, during, and after the Civil War. Young Harvey's life turns upside down when his well-to-do family leaves their comfortable life in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to establish a logging company, in the wild mountains of southeastern Kentucky. Added to this uprooting, an older brother makes his life more miserable with ridicule, insults, and other abusive treatment. But young Harvey finds consolation in the annual steamboat trips the family makes to visit family in Pittsburgh and in his new friendship with Evan, the son of a neighbor. Together they explore the mountainsides and become close friends despite their families' choosing opposite sides in the slavery dispute. As the conflict over slavery brings destruction, chaos, divisions and death to Harvey's family, his friendships, his Kentucky homeland, and his nation, Harvey's own loyalties are tested, and he must choose between standing with his family or with his heart. His efforts to seek revenge for the injustices he feels turns into a long journey through mountains, towns, and cities from Kentucky through Virginia to Washington D.C, and even to Chicago. Harvey's saga lets us see Civil War history through the eyes of an everyday teenage soldier plunged into its midst, including the battles of Lynchburg, Monocacy, and Fort Stevens, and the Camp Douglas Prison in Chicago. All along this extended journey he meets interesting people-some seek to take advantage of his youth and inexperience, but most give him a helping hand. Fortunately, in the midst of all these difficulties he finds someone to love. When the war ends, Harvey returns to his family's logging business in Kentucky, but finally he realizes he must become independent and strikes out on his own. Eventually he builds his own house in Tennessee, where seventy years later Harvey's great-granddaughter Maggie Martin, the main character in Appalachian Daughter will be born. Harvey has finally become a man-an Appalachian mountain man. Appalachian Memory: A Survivor's Tale is a story of survival-of the wilderness, of Civil War, of family conflict, of sickness and injury, of death and grief-but it is also a story of adventure, friendship, loyalty, bravery, determination, hope, and love.

Every toy and game has been tested by the Foxfire students and is devised to make or play yourself, without major expense, complicated parts, or electricity. Originally published in 1985, the book includes familiar games like marbles, hopscotch, and horseshoes, as well as more obscure entertainments such as stealing the pines, crows and cranes, and thimble. Here, too, are instructions for constructing playhouses, noisemakers, puzzles, and whimmy diddles. The book also provides information on special games traditionally played on Sundays and holidays. For those who are tired of worn-out batteries and electronic toys and for anyone curious about the playtimes of an earlier generation, The Foxfire Book of Appalachian Toys and Games is a welcome and entertaining guide.

Book My Appalachia

Download or read book My Appalachia written by Sidney Saylor Farr and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable memoir is “both one person’s extraordinary life story and a first-hand look at life in the mountains in a time that is fading from memory” (Kentucky Monthly). My family lived as far back in the hollers as it was possible to go in Bell County, Kentucky. Dad worked in the timber woods and at a sawmill, when there was employment to be found. We ate what we grew on the place or could glean from the hillsides. Just about everything was made by hand. We had little contact with people outside the region . . . Sidney Saylor Farr grew up in the mountains of southeastern Kentucky, the eldest of ten children. Her devotion to her family led her to accept heavy responsibilities from a very young age: At three, she remembers being put in charge of her baby sister while her parents worked in the corn field, and at twelve, she was forced to leave school to care for her ailing mother and younger siblings. Though she didn’t have much time to pursue her own goals, life in the mountains nourished and shaped Farr and the writer she would become. Her great-grandmother was a master storyteller, and stories passed down from generation to generation fueled her imagination. Her Aunt Dellie, a voracious reader, received discarded books from the Pineville library, and as she shared these volumes with young Sidney, she opened the world to her eager niece. Eventually, Farr’s intense determination compelled her to find her own path and gave her the strength to become one of the most influential figures in Appalachian literature. Living in Appalachia was difficult—many people of Farr’s generation left the mountains for good—but she persisted through countless challenges, including poverty, discrimination, and personal loss, and managed to thrive. Composed of a rich mix of folklore, family history, and spiritual and intellectual exploration, Farr’s memoir shares the stories of her struggles and triumphs to create a vivid picture of a culture as enduring as the mountains. Winner of the Appalachian Book of the Year Award

Book Abandoned Places Abandoned Memories

Download or read book Abandoned Places Abandoned Memories written by Sharon Day and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-09-27 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second in the popular Abandoned Places: Abandoned Memories series, this Appalachian Edition takes the reader to a vastly different location than the previous Desert Edition. Julie Ferguson captured a wide variety of abandoned sites in Appalachia in stunning photographs. Sharon Day performed a psychic read on each location to write emotionally-gripping vignettes of a person's life. Even though these locations are long since abandoned, there is still life within, information awaiting a psychic sensitive to bring them to life again with her touch. The book contains many bonus sections, as well, such as why cemeteries are haunted, tips on urban exploration and photography, the beautiful region of Appalachia, a bonus read on an abandoned stuffed animal in a cemetery, and tips on what it's like to perform psychometry (psychic reading elicited by touching an object). Once these visions are in the reader's mind, it will be as hard to let them go as it is for the psychic.
