They are as skillfully wrought with the visible world as they are with the luminous being in the hollow of a cupped hand. When Aaron McCarver met Gilbert Morris at the CBA convention in 1991, he never dreamed that those initial discussions would ultimately lead to his conceiving a historical fiction series that he would write with Gilbert Morris. THE SPRIT OF APPALACHIA chronicles the story of the settlers of America's first frontier--the lands over the Appalachian mountains--and of faith that carried them through the harshest of times. Over the Misty Mountains is the story of Hawk Spencer, a man whose bitterness over the loss of his wife drives him from his home in Virginia and causes him to seek the frontier to escape his pain. Becoming a skilled trapper, Hawk is persuaded to lead a wagon train over the mountains before the snows come, but the trail is marked by sabotage from an old enemy of Hawk's. When renegade Indians attack the wagon train and leave Elizabeth MacNeal and her children without a husband, how will Hawk respond to Elizabeth's resilient faith in God? This book was released on 2016-08-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One Man. One Woman. A Lifetime of Achievements. Paul F. Maddox grew up during the Great Depression in rural Eastern Kentucky. Everyday life was a challenge for most during this time, especially for those living in one of the poorest regions of Appalachia. Orphaned at the age of six, he overcame poverty, insecurity, and disability to follow his dreams. In 1951, Paul married Patricia Lamb-a young lady with drive and devotion. After Paul graduated from the University of Louisville's School of Medicine and served an internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, the couple opened a practice in Campton-a rural, tobacco-farming town nestled in the hills of Eastern Kentucky. Dr. Paul and Patricia Maddox would work for over half a century to make the impoverished area a better place to live. Dr. Maddox rose to national prominence during the 1960's through his efforts to lower the poverty rate using birth control. During this time, he became known as the busiest doctor in the country. Open virtually 24/7, the Maddox Clinic regularly attended over 100 patients per day and delivered over 6,000 babies. In 1999, Dr. Maddox was presented the prestigious Country Doctor of the Year Award. The life of Dr. Paul and Patricia Maddox is an against-all-odds story of personal strength, determination, and perseverance during a time and in a place where few dreams came true. Their narrative is a model that we can use as an inspiration to improve ourselves and the lives of those around us.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Appalachia, Vol. 11: The Journal of the Appalachian Mountain Club, 1905-1908 Around the reservoirs of many glaciers we find steep clifis from which rocks are continually falling. They are covered up by the snow, follow their course along the lines of flow through the body of the ice, and are brought to the surface near the end of the glacier. It is an interesting observation that glaciers whose reservoirs are surrounded by rapidly weathering clifis have their lower ends thickly covered with moraine material; whereas glaciers originating on high plateaus have perfectly clean ends, a peculiar difference entirely explained by the dis position of the lines of flow. There is no necessity, therefore, to ascribe this material to ground moraines. The accumulation of snow in the reservoir increases from the névé line for some distance _up, and as the annual deposits accumulate they flow downward and forward; each tributary or, indeed, each recess in the surrounding mountains forms its own layers of strata, and as these flow into the general trough, they are compressed and folded so that their outcrops on the surface of the ice are usually long loops pointing down stream. It frequently occurs that this folding does not show itself near the névé line, but appears further down the dissipator, at the lower ends of the lines of flow, whose origin lies far up in the reservoir where the folding begins; so that we find reproduced in the dissipator certain characteristics of the upper reservoir. Glaciers which have no well differentiated tributaries may, nevertheless, have their dissipators divided longitudinally into different systems of loops, which represent the outcrops of the folded strata from the recesses above; and the lines separating these parts, hardly distinguishable in the upper part of the dis sipator, become stronger and stronger as they approach the end of the glacier. If this dividing line really separates two tribu taries which have united in the reservoir, it will probably develop into an internal moraine. This is beautifully illustrated in the great Aletsch glacier (plate IL). After the sun has set, the whole surface of this glacier, when seen from the summit of the Aggischhorn, shows most beautiful systems of loops resem bling the line of a fine engraving. These systems are separated by longitudinal lines, faint at first, but growing more and more marked, and one of them becomes the great median moraine, so prominently seen at the end of the glacier. Download or read book Our Roots Run Deep as Ironweed written by Shannon Elizabeth Bell and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivated by a deeply rooted sense of place and community, Appalachian women have long fought against the damaging effects of industrialization. In this collection of interviews, sociologist Shannon Elizabeth Bell presents the voices of twelve Central Appalachian women, environmental justice activists fighting against mountaintop removal mining and its devastating effects on public health, regional ecology, and community well-being. Each woman narrates her own personal story of injustice and tells how that experience led her to activism. The interviews--many of them illustrated by the women's "photostories"--describe obstacles, losses, and tragedies. But they also tell of new communities and personal transformations catalyzed through activism. Bell supplements each narrative with careful notes that aid the reader while amplifying the power and flow of the activists' stories. Bell's analysis outlines the relationship between Appalachian women's activism and the gendered responsibilities they feel within their families and communities. Ultimately, Bell argues that these women draw upon a broader "protector identity" that both encompasses and extends the identity of motherhood that has often been associated with grassroots women's activism. As protectors, the women challenge dominant Appalachian gender expectations and guard not only their families but also their homeplaces, their communities, their heritage, and the endangered mountains that surround them. 30% of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to organizations fighting for environmental justice in Central Appalachia.
