Book excerpt: “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13 Faith, hope, and love—we hear a lot about each on their own, but how are they related? Why is this triad mentioned so often in the New Testament? Written in the form of fifty-eight questions and answers, this book reveals how these three theological virtues—also referred to as “three divine sisters”—together serve as the foundation for our whole Christian life. Deeply scriptural, steeped in key theological texts, and modeled after the classic catechisms of church history, this book will instruct our minds, stir our hearts, and motivate us to faith-filled obedience.

Book The Joy of the Gospel

Download or read book The Joy of the Gospel written by Pope Francis and published by Image. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

  • ISBN : 1532605994
  • Pages : 277 pages

Download or read book 1 Peter written by Peter R. Rodgers and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a different kind of commentary. Rather than being the work of one or two individual scholars, it is the result of the collaboration of twenty-one contributors, and others who assisted at all stages of production. The first letter of Peter itself appears to be the product of collaboration of early Christian leaders who sought to encourage those who were suffering for the name of Christ. Christians in today's world are faced with the same challenge, and we trust that this collaborative commentary will encourage them as they seek to follow in the steps of Christ.

Book Light from the East Papyrologische Kommentare Zum Neuen Testament

Download or read book Light from the East Papyrologische Kommentare Zum Neuen Testament written by Peter Arzt-Grabner and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2010 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The papers in this book provide a good introduction to the purpose and scope of the PKNT project. The PKNT commentaries function as original and innovative supplements to traditional biblical commentaries." Since more than 15 years, research projects entitled "Papyrological Commentaries on the New Testament" (PKNT) are sponsored by the Austrian Science Fund FWF. In December 2009 a symposium was held at the University of Salzburg where papyrologists, biblical scholars, scholars of classics, anthropology, and ancient law from the US, from Canada, Italy, Germany, and Austria met to present their papers. The "Papyrological Commentaries" focus on documentary papyri, ostraca, as well as wooden and waxed tablets from Greco-Roman times that illuminate language, genre, topics, and the social and political situation of biblical texts. The papers of this volume edited by Peter Arzt-Grabner and Christina M. Kreinecker deal with specific texts of the Old and New Testament (Genesis, Gospel of John, Pauline Letters) and are concerned with ancient slavery; the world of shepherds, weavers, and apprentices; the tradition and compilation of Pauline letters; the veneration of saints; the translation of the Hebrew Bible; and early Christian liturgy.

  • ISBN : 1467459259

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “God is love is the radical claim of Christianity,” writes Frederick Bauerschmidt at the beginning of this little meditation on the essentials of Christian faith. In a rich yet accessible style reminiscent of C. S. Lewis and G. K. Chesterton, Bauerschmidt breathes life back into that claim, drawing from Scripture, great Christian and non-Christian writers of the past, and his own lived experience to show just how countercultural and subversive Christianity is actually meant to be. Eschewing the abstract and dogmatic in favor of the relational and inviting, he offers something for everyone, from lifelong churchgoers and students of religion to the growing population of “nones” among younger generations who are increasingly seeking spiritual fulfillment outside of institutional Christianity. With further reading suggestions (both scriptural and nonscriptural) at the end of each chapter, The Love That Is God is the perfect starting point of a spiritual journey into deeper relationship with God. Michael Ramsey Prize (2023)

Book Catholic Theology

  • Author : Tracey Rowland
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2017-01-26
  • ISBN : 0567657671
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Catholic Theology written by Tracey Rowland and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rowland showcases here the dominant contemporary approaches to doing Catholic theology. Chapter 1 offers a summary of the two International Theological Commission (ITC) documents on the discipline of Catholic theology. These documents set out the general principles which should govern any approach to Catholic theology (at least according to the ITC). The subsequent chapters each focus on one of four different approaches frequently found in contemporary Catholic academies: the approach of Thomists, members of the Communio milieu, members of the Concilium milieu and promoters of different varieties of Liberation Theology. Rowland's work is pitched at the level of first time students of theology who are trying to make sense of the methodological choices which undergird the different approaches to Catholic theology. Rowland concludes with four appendices: a list of all Doctors of the Church, a list of all encyclicals since the 19th century, a list of the documents of the Second Vatican Council, and a list of definitions of the various Christological heresies which were the subject of the debates of the early Church Councils. These appendices will provide useful reference tables for young scholars, including seminarians.
