Book Saint Pope Paul VI

Download or read book Saint Pope Paul VI written by Dr. Matthew Bunson and published by Sophia Institute Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pope Paul VI was one of the most perceptive and visionary popes in the modern era, foreseeing not just the rise of secularism, but the negative effect it would have on the family and the human soul. Yet despite the tremendous spiritual and theological value of Pope Paul VI’s writings, much has been forgotten, lost in the decades of controversy and dissent — until now. In these pages, Matthew Bunson resurrects the time-tested teachings of Pope Paul VI, showing how his prophetic reflections on modernity are needed in our own age more than ever. Guided by the deep spirituality and approachable theology of Paul VI, you’ll come to understand the root causes of secularism, the risks of globalization, the damage caused by the isolation of young people in the modern world, and why human dignity must be safeguarded in the face of scientific advances. Widely recognized as the first modern pope, Pope Paul VI led the Catholic Church in the wake of the controversies surrounding how to implement and interpret the Second Vatican Council. On one side he battled a reluctant Vatican bureaucracy resistant to authentic reform, while on the other side he guided the faithful in a time of rampant confusion. Bunson also details the graceful and holy way in which Pope Paul VI handled the many dissenting voices raised against the Church’s teachings on contraception, and how he fought for the dignity of the human person as he faced criticism from both the left and the right. Read this book, and you’ll enter into the mind of one of the Church’s newest saints, better prepared not just to defend the teachings of the Church, but to do so in an approachable and holy way.

Book The Eucharist as Offering of Firstfruits

Download or read book The Eucharist as Offering of Firstfruits written by Lawrence Francis Ligocki and published by Lawrence Francis Ligocki. This book was released on 2017-06-04 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the difficulties for Protestant, Evangelical, Pentecostal, and other Christians is how to understand the Eucharist as sacrifice, offering, and oblation. A return to ancient Jewish and Christian sources has uncovered the category of the offering of firstfruits. This is found in a lesser degree among Second Temple Judaism and to a greater degree in early Christian literature beginning with the New Testament itself. This has brought renewed interest in understanding the Eucharist not only in the context of the Feast of Passover, but also in light of the Feast of Pentecost and the offering of firsfruits, and within the context of the Zebach tôdâ —that is, the sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. This has strong implications for a theological, liturgical, spiritual, and practical awakening in understanding the Eucharist as Sacrifice. In the Eucharist, the Church offers the firsfruits of creation, Christ, and also herself to the Father in the Holy Spirit. Each member is called to actively participate in the Eucharistic sacrifice through which they themselves become a Holy and Living sacrifice for the life of the world. This has implications for a renewed Eucharistic spirituality and worship, the New Evangelization, and new works of mercy.

Book The History and the Future of the Roman Liturgy

Download or read book The History and the Future of the Roman Liturgy written by Denis Crouan and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2011-07-05 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Second Vatican Council, the liturgy has become the source of conflicting opinions. This situation has given rise to disputes that continue to divide those who practice their faith. But what has created this state of affairs? Author Denis Crouan shows how the decisions made by Vatican II that aimed at restoring the Roman rite were presented poorly, applied incorrectly, and often not applied at all. In many places the Mass has been turned into a permanent work-in-progress, in which the objectivity of the liturgy yields to the subjectivity of those who take part in it. Where does the current unwillingness to apply the liturgical rules come from? Why have the directives of the last council been ignored or circumvented? This book offers answers to the questions asked by Catholics who want to understand their liturgy better, so as to put an end to deviant practices that threaten Church unity.
