Book Apostles in Prussia

Download or read book Apostles in Prussia written by Alexandra Enzensberger and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1515 onward, Raphael worked on a cycle of tapestries for the Sistine Chapel depicting the work of the apostles Peter and Paul. His drawings later served as models for numerous other tapestry series. In the 19th century, one of them came from London to Berlin where it was displayed in prominent places on the Museum Island until its loss in World War II.0The story of the Berlin Raphael tapestries is told from four perspectives. An art-historical view deals with the subjects, the genesis and the original arrangement of the scenes in the Sistine Chapel. A look at the history of restoration sheds light on the discourses about the ?proper? handling of works of art in the 19th century. The reconstruction of the first large special exhibition in the Berlin Royal Museum in 1848 shows what forms of presentation prevailed in European galleries of the time. Finally, historical photographs of the objects and their exhibition venues will be used to reconstruct about 100 years of the Berlin presentation history of the Raphael tapestries

Book The Cambridge Apostles 1820 1914

Download or read book The Cambridge Apostles 1820 1914 written by William C. Lubenow and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-10-29 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a highly engaging history of the world's most famous secret society, the Cambridge 'Apostles', based upon the lives, careers and correspondence of the 255 Apostles elected to the Cambridge Conversazione Society between 1820 and 1914. It examines the way in which the Apostles recruited their membership, the Society's discussions and its intellectual preoccupations. From its pages emerge such figures as F. D. Maurice, John Sterling, John Mitchell Kemble, Richard Trench, Fenton Hort, James Clerk Maxwell, Henry Sidgwick, Lytton Strachey, E. M. Forster, and John Maynard Keynes. The careers of these and many other leading Apostles are traced, through parliament, government, letters, and in public school and university reform. The book also makes an important contribution in discussing the role of liberalism, imagination and friendship at the intersection of the life of learning and public life. This is a major contribution to the intellectual and social history of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and to the history of the University of Cambridge. It demonstrates in impressive depth just how and why the Apostles forged original themes in modern intellectual life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul the Apostle: A Biblical Portrait and a Mirror of the Manifold Grace of God During the last ten or twenty years a very remarkable attention has been given, in many countries, to the study of the Life and Personal Character of St Paul. A large number of books might be mentioned, published during this period, on the whole or on part of this subject, in England and Germany, Holland and France. Among these books, the small volume here presented to the reader deserves to hold a conspicuous place. My share in the publication of this translation has been limited to making arrangements with the publisher, to correcting the proof-sheets, and giving a more English turn to some of the sentences which seemed to require it. In discharging the last of these tasks, I have confined myself within narrow bounds, and most scrupulously avoided communicating the least shade of difference of meaning to any single expression.
