Book excerpt: We define an analogue of the local multiplier algebra for Hilbert modules and use properties of this localisation to enrich non-closed actions on C*-algebras to closed actions on local multiplier algebras. This is used to descend known results on such closed actions down to their unclosed counterparts. We define aperiodic dynamical inclusions and characterise them as crossed products by inverse semigroup actions. We show that in the commutative case we show that weak Cartan subalgebras are maximal abelian, and show such inclusions have twisted groupoid models....

Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the theory of unbounded derivations in C*-algebras, a subject whose study was motivated by questions in quantum physics and statistical mechanics, and to which the author has made a considerable contribution. This is an active area of research, and one of the most ambitious aims of the theory is to develop quantum statistical mechanics within the framework of the C*-theory. The presentation, which is based on lectures given in Newcastle upon Tyne and Copenhagen, concentrates on topics involving quantum statistical mechanics and differentiations on manifolds. One of the goals is to formulate the absence theorem of phase transitions in its most general form within the C* setting. For the first time, he globally constructs, within that setting, derivations for a fairly wide class of interacting models, and presents a new axiomatic treatment of the construction of time evolutions and KMS states.

Book excerpt: The author unifies various constructions of $C^*$-algebras from dynamical systems, specifically, the dimension group construction of Krieger for shift spaces, the corresponding constructions of Wagoner and Boyle, Fiebig and Fiebig for countable state Markov shifts and one-sided shift spaces, respectively, and the constructions of Ruelle and Putnam for Smale spaces. The general setup is used to analyze the structure of the $C^*$-algebras arising from the homoclinic and heteroclinic equivalence relations in expansive dynamical systems, in particular, expansive group endomorphisms and automorphisms and generalized 1-solenoids. For these dynamical systems it is shown that the $C^*$-algebras are inductive limits of homogeneous or sub-homogeneous algebras with one-dimensional spectra.

Book excerpt: The subject of C*-algebras received a dramatic revitalization in the 1970s by the introduction of topological methods through the work of Brown, Douglas, and Fillmore on extensions of C*-algebras and Elliott's use of K-theory to provide a useful classification of AF algebras. These results were the beginning of a marvelous new set of tools for analyzing concrete C*-algebras. This book is an introductory graduate level text which presents the basics of the subject through a detailed analysis of several important classes of C*-algebras. The development of operator algebras in the last twenty years has been based on a careful study of these special classes. While there are many books on C*-algebras and operator algebras available, this is the first one to attempt to explain the real examples that researchers use to test their hypotheses. Topic include AF algebras, Bunce-Deddens and Cuntz algebras, the Toeplitz algebra, irrational rotation algebras, group C*-algebras, discrete crossed products, abelian C*-algebras (spectral theory and approximate unitary equivalence) and extensions. It also introduces many modern concepts and results in the subject such as real rank zero algebras, topological stable rank, quasidiagonality, and various new constructions. By Gelfand transformation, the theory of C∗-algebras is also regarded as non-commutative topology. About a decade ago, George A. Elliott initiated the program of classification of C∗-algebras (up to isomorphism) by their K-theoretical data. It started with the classification of AT-algebras with real rank zero. Since then great efforts have been made to classify amenable C∗-algebras, a class of C∗-algebras that arises most naturally. For example, a large class of simple amenable C∗-algebras is discovered to be classifiable. The application of these results to dynamical systems has been established.This book introduces the recent development of the theory of the classification of amenable C∗-algebras — the first such attempt. The first three chapters present the basics of the theory of C∗-algebras which are particularly important to the theory of the classification of amenable C∗-algebras. Chapter 4 otters the classification of the so-called AT-algebras of real rank zero. The first four chapters are self-contained, and can serve as a text for a graduate course on C∗-algebras. The last two chapters contain more advanced material. In particular, they deal with the classification theorem for simple AH-algebras with real rank zero, the work of Elliott and Gong.
