Book Telling Stories the Kiowa Way

Download or read book Telling Stories the Kiowa Way written by Gus Palmer and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2003-04-01 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the Kiowa, storytelling takes place under familiar circumstances. A small group of relatives and close friends gather. Tales are informative as well as entertaining. Joking and teasing are key components. Group participation is expected. And outsiders are seldom involved. This book explores the traditional art of storytelling still practiced by Kiowas today as Gus Palmer shares conversations held with storytellers. Combining narrative, personal experience, and ethnography in an original and artful way, Palmer—an anthropologist raised in a traditional Kiowa family—shows not only that storytelling remains an integral part of Kiowa culture but also that narratives embedded in everyday conversation are the means by which Kiowa cultural beliefs and values are maintained. Palmer's study features contemporary oral storytelling and other discourses, assembled over two and a half years of fieldwork, that demonstrate how Kiowa storytellers practice their art. Focusing on stories and their meaning within a narrative and ethnographic context, he draws on a range of material, including dream stories, stories about the coming of Táimê (the spirit of the Sun Dance) to the Kiowas, and stories of tricksters and tribal heroes. He shows how storytellers employ the narrative devices of actively participating in oral narratives, leaving stories wide open, or telling stories within stories. And he demonstrates how stories can reflect a wide range of sensibilities, from magical realism to gossip. Firmly rooted in current linguistic anthropological thought, Telling Stories the Kiowa Way is a work of analysis and interpretation that helps us understand story within its larger cultural contexts. It combines the author's unique literary talent with his people's equally unique perspective on anthropological questions in a text that can be enjoyed on multiple levels by scholars and general readers alike.

Book How Twitter Made Him Great Again

Download or read book How Twitter Made Him Great Again written by Laura Maya and published by Estalontech. This book was released on 2018-10-28 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon the initial declaration of his candidacy, few people gave the reality television star a chance of success in the presidential election. Late night show hosts made jokes, the media speculated on his possible early exit, and rival politicians treated him with disdain. However, the adept use of Twitter served to strengthen the campaign, branding him with populist appeal while garnering an increasing base that thrived on his nationalist, anti-immigrant rhetoric. For both the Republican primary and the general election, Twitter served as the great equalizer. Additionally, his ever growing base of followers allowed him to communicate directly with the world, circumventing news coverage. This was particularly critical in the creation of a brand that painted the media as purveyors of “fake news,” creating dissonance and encouraging the acceptance of a false narrative. Astonishingly, the people listened, allowing the narrative to be changed. Furthermore, the simplicity of Twitter allowed the campaign to thrive. The candidate could respond to critics with a simple click, leaving an overly simplistic retort that could be retweeted by his millions of followers. This further helped to create a narrative. Twitter allowed his tweets to largely go viral. His more outrageous tweets garnered even more sharing and retweets on the platform yielding more free publicity . While other candidates focused on traditional campaign methods, Twitter kept the reality television star constantly in the spotlight , frequently his leading stories were on the nightly news headline . Twitter essentially allowed him to channel his brash style into an easy-to-digest public image of a entrepreneurial businessman , who has of non political background , an outsider focused on translating his business success into significant governmental reform as he starts his new journey venture into the First Office .

God's story is like this...a captivating epic that stretches from the beginning of time, across our lives and into the future...calling us to find ourselves in it. We can help students to be captured by this amazing story, rather than seeing the Bible as confusing, boring or irrelevant. After ten years in youth ministry, Michael Novelli felt like he had tried everything to help his students connect with the Bible. Then, a missionary introduced him to a unique, ancient way to engage people with the Bible through story. Michael learned the art of 'Storying,' a sequential telling of Bible stories followed by a time of creative retelling and in-depth dialogue. God used this process to completely transform his youth group as they found themselves experiencing God in a whole new way. Take a journey into the amazing process of Storying, and discover how it can change your life and ministry. This new approach to learning builds a lasting theological foundation while challenging students to discover their unique identity and calling in God's story. Shaped by the Story helps you understand why Storying connects with students today, and provides all you need to introduce Storying to your group, including sample narratives and an interactive training DVD.
