Book excerpt: "You get one chance with me. You blow it, that's your fault."James Tully isn't what you'd call a forgiving sort of guy. He lives by a code of ethics - honor, trust, fidelity. And if you break those values, the way Sawyer did six years ago when he accused James of cheating on him? You're out. But six years is an awful long time to go without companionship, so when he meets a cute little sub at The Black Room, he can't help himself from wanting to take their anonymous liaison one step further. "What if we're no good together once the masks come off?"It's been six years. Sawyer's never really been able to set James behind him, but considering that James makes it very clear he hasn't been able to forgive and forget any time he runs into Sawyer around town, Sawyer supposes it's past time for him to move on. And when he meets a strong, caring Dom at a masquerade party, he can't help but fall a little in love, dreaming of a new future. That is, until the masks come off...Welcome to Worthington, Texas, where the heat doesn't just rise in the summer - you'll feel it all year long in these stories of older men and their younger lovers. Every book in the Worth It series can be read on its own, but with so many familiar characters to love, why stop with just one? This book features a leather cowboy Dom, his hopeful, eager submissive, and the second chance of a lifetime.

Book Dreaming Souls

    Book Details:
  • Author : Owen Flanagan
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2001-05-17
  • ISBN : 019534958X
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Dreaming Souls written by Owen Flanagan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-05-17 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What, if anything, do dreams tell us about ourselves? What is the relationship between types of sleep and types of dreams? Does dreaming serve any purpose? Or are dreams simply meaningless mental noise--"unmusical fingers wandering over the piano keys"? With expertise in philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience, Owen Flanagan is uniquely qualified to answer these questions. And in Dreaming Souls he provides both an accessible survey of the latest research on sleep and dreams and a compelling new theory about the nature and function of dreaming. Flanagan argues that while sleep has a clear biological function and adaptive value, dreams are merely side effects, "free riders," irrelevant from an evolutionary point of view. But dreams are hardly unimportant. Indeed, Flanagan argues that dreams are self-expressive, the result of our need to find or to create meaning, even when we're sleeping. Rejecting Freud's theory of manifest and latent content--of repressed wishes appearing in disguised form--Flanagan shows how brainstem activity during sleep generates a jumbled profusion of memories, images, thoughts, emotions, and desires, which the cerebral cortex then attempts to shape into a more or less coherent story. Such dream-narratives range from the relatively mundane worries of non REM sleep to the fantastic confabulations of deep REM that resemble psychotic episodes in their strangeness. But however bizarre these narratives may be, they can shed light on our mental life, our well being, and our sense of self. Written with clarity, lively wit, and remarkable insight, Dreaming Souls offers a fascinating new way of apprehending one of the oldest mysteries of mental life.

Book Harry Keogh Necroscope and Other Heroes

Download or read book Harry Keogh Necroscope and Other Heroes written by Brian Lumley and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the fertile mind of Brian Lumley: Weird heroes and weirder worlds! Harry Keogh: Necroscope and Other Weird Heroes! Vampires. Elder Gods. Nightmares. Mysterious elixirs. Wines capable of transporting the drinker-literally-to another world. Fossils that dream of rending flesh between their teeth. These wonders, and many more, spring from the fertile imagination of Brian Lumley. Harry Keogh: Necroscope and Other Weird Heroes! collects eight long tales of four of Lumley's most popular creations; Titus Crow, David Hero and his companion, Eldin the Wanderer; and the original Necroscope himself, Harry Keogh, who is featured in three completely new stories, one of them a short novel. The other stories in this collection have previously only been published in the United Kingdom. Titus Crow: Psychic detective, master magician, destroyer of the ancient Cthulian gods. In "Inception," we see the infant Titus at the moment his destiny falls upon him. In "Lord of the Worms," a simple secretarial job lands Crow on a sacrificial altar. And in "Name and Number," Henri Laurent de Marigny details a battle between Titus Crow and malevolent, occult winds that can rip living flesh from bone. David Hero and Eldin the Wanderer: once men of the waking world, now agents for King Kuranes of the Dreamlands. Sips of "The Weird Wines of Naxas Niss" send the pair on a tumultuous journey from a buxom beauty's bed to the depths of a wizard's dungeon. Then, seeking his missing friend, David Hero boards an ill-fated airship that is home to "The Stealer of Dreams." Harry Keogh, Necroscope: vampire killer without peer, capable of conversing with the dead. A sudden windfall brings Harry to Las Vegas, where he meets "Dead Eddy," a gambler who can't resist the temptation of one last big win-from beyond the grave! In "Dinosaur Dreams," Harry's interest in fossils leads him to uncover the truth behind the death of a young amateur paleontologist . . . and to discover that it's not just dead people he can call on in a crisis.... Harry's undying love for his mother leads him down a dangerous path in the brief "Resurrection." Four of Lumley's greatest heroes. Three of his most popular worlds. Tales to chill and to delight. Open the book and be swept away. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book Dreams on Film

  • Author : Leslie Halpern
  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2010-06-28
  • ISBN : 9780786480760
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Dreams on Film written by Leslie Halpern and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Films with dream sequences, or a dreamlike quality, allow directors to create their own rules of logic and nature to meet a variety of artistic needs. For instance, an opening dream immediately establishes what a character is feeling; a later dream--or series of them--provides viewers with a glimpse of the climax, and a concluding dream ties up loose ends. (In real life, of course, dreams do not occur at such convenient times or serve such useful purposes.) This book explores why science is lost or distorted in the process of representing dreams on film and why audiences prefer this figurative truth of art over the literal truth of science. Part One discusses changes in form and considers the history of dream theory. Additionally, the physiology of sleeping and dreaming, dream structure, sleep deprivation, dreams under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and waking up, as depicted on film, are examined. Part Two investigates changes in content, and delves into the psychology of sleeping and dreaming, dream interpretation, altered states of consciousness, visions and prophecies, dreams as wish fulfillment, sex and death, nightmares, and reality versus illusion. The author uses theories by Freud, Jung, and current experts in her analyses of dream sequences and their use in film.

  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2003-02-27
  • ISBN : 9780521008693
  • Pages : 378 pages

Download or read book Sleep and Dreaming written by Edward F. Pace-Schott and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-02-27 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How and why does the sleeping brain generate dreams? Though the question is old, a paradigm shift is now occurring in the science of sleep and dreaming that is making room for new answers. From brainstem-based models of sleep cycle control, research is moving toward combined brainstem/forebrain models of sleep cognition itself. The book presents five papers by leading scientists at the center of the current firmament, and more than seventy-five commentaries on those papers by nearly all of the other leading authorities in the field. Topics include mechanisms of dreaming and REM sleep, memory consolidation in REM sleep, and an evolutionary hypothesis of the function of dreaming. The papers and commentaries, together with the authors' rejoinders, represent a huge leap forward in our understanding of the sleeping and dreaming brain. The book's multidisciplinary perspective will appeal to students and researchers in neuroscience, cognitive science, and psychology.
