Book excerpt: In the 1950s, just a few years after Newfoundland entered Confederation, the first official provincial resettlement program saw thousands of islanders leave their coastal out-port communities to resettle on the mainland. The plan was that families would have better access to schools, medical care, community infrastructure such as roads and electricity, and employment. For many, this included putting their houses on barges and floating them to their new location. Blue Moon on Water is the story of the fictional Moore family, their salt cod and lobster fishing community of Deer Island, and their ultimate decision to resettle. Told through the eyes of Hannah Marie, an inquisitive teenager, we follow the day-to-day lives of the people in her community and learn of their hopes, dreams, loves, celebrations, fishing, and food. Told with love, humour, and pride, these are the stories of people who have shaped the resilient culture of Newfoundland and the ever-indomitable spirit of its people.

Book excerpt: I have always had a definitive love for ancient time periods. I have written many short stories of long ago, some became prize winners in high school. I have a long history of love for Asian women. I think they are very mysterious as well as loving and loyal, that is why I had chosen ancient China before it was called anything as a backdrop for this story. If you are really intent on knowing me, then read my stories. They tell a lot if not most things about me. I didn’t have the greatest childhood in the world, but it was good to certain point. I was left alone much of the time, that is how I developed my love for the long ago. I have always been a dreamer and can’t see that changing any time soon. Although I live in reality, I have and active dream state. I had found a way to combine the both to become my reality by incorporating them in my everyday life. I find it fits me well. I love movies of ancient times. A few of my favorites are Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments, and the Passion of the Christ. I haven’t always been a man of deep Christian beliefs. When I was young, I have a few minor scrapes with others getting into fights, but that changed when I was thirteen, that was when I came to Christ, and it has forever changed me. Since then, I have had very little trouble with anyone, chasing to stay out of harms way until I am needed. I do hope you find this story enlightening

Book The Eden Express

Download or read book The Eden Express written by Mark Vonnegut and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2002-11-05 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eden Express describes from the inside Mark Vonnegut’s experience in the late ’60s and early ’70s—a recent college grad; in love; living communally on a farm, with a famous and doting father, cherished dog, and prized jalopy—and then the nervous breakdowns in all their slow-motion intimacy, the taste of mortality and opportunity for humor they provided, and the grim despair they afforded as well. That he emerged to write this funny and true book and then moved on to find the meaningful life that for a while had seemed beyond reach is what ultimately happens in The Eden Express. But the real story here is that throughout his harrowing experience his sense of humor let him see the humanity of what he was going through, and his gift of language let him describe it in such a moving way that others could begin to imagine both its utter ordinariness as well as the madness we all share.

Book Spontaneous Evolution

Download or read book Spontaneous Evolution written by Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D. and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We’ve all heard stories of people who’ve experienced seemingly miraculous recoveries from illness, but can the same thing happen for our world? According to pioneering biologist Bruce H. Lipton, it’s not only possible, it’s already occurring. In Spontaneous Evolution, this world-renowned expert in the emerging science of epigenetics reveals how our changing understanding of biology will help us navigate this turbulent period in our planet’s history and how each of us can participate in this global shift. In collaboration with political philosopher Steve Bhaerman, Dr. Lipton invites readers to reconsider the "unquestionable" pillars of biology, including: · random evolution, survival of the fittest, and the role of DNA; · the relationship between mind and matter; · how our beliefs about nature and human nature shape our politics, culture, and individual lives; and · how each of us can become planetary "stem cells" supporting the health and growth of our world. By questioning the old beliefs that got us to where we are today and keep us stuck in the status quo, we can trigger the spontaneous evolution of our species that will usher in a brighter future.
