Book excerpt: The comprehensive first monograph on Indian architect Anupama Kundoo The fourth volume in the book series The Architect's Studio presents the Indian architect Anupama Kundoo (born 1967). Kundoo is a much-revered architect whose work aims to shed light on a scarce resource in our life: time. Kundoo sees time as a forgotten resource in architecture. Constructed as a journey through time, this volume explores how Kundoo integrates traditional Indian building customs, crafts and materials into her current works. In general, Kundoo is concerned with using as few material resources as possible in her architecture, and is attentive to traditional building methods. A perfect distillation of her working methods can be found in the house she built for herself outside the community of Auroville, India. The house, constructed of terracotta, brick, concrete and wood, creates a seamless transition on a human scale between the interior and the exterior with elements of both mirroring each other within and without.

Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive monograph to focus on the visionary French architect Roger Anger, recipient of the 1967 Belgian Premier Prix International d'Architecture. A sculptural plasticity and a highly individual take on the Modernist vernacular infuse all of his work; but Anger, who died in 2008, will be remembered for his ambitious master plan for the utopian Indian city of Auroville, based on the idea of a proliferating, open-ended galaxy, designed to be self-sufficient and promoted as the "dream of a new city for the future" and a haven from sectarianism and nationialism. A graduate of Paris's cole des Beaux-Arts, Anger arrived in India in 1956; within the space of a decade, he had risen to become Auroville's chief architect, and the essence of his work as an architect, painter and sculptor is reflected in that unique construction. The volume documents Anger's prolific and innovative projects of the 1950s and 1960s, which include more than 100 buildings, such as Grenoble's L'Ile Verte, three 28-storey housing towers, which were for some time the highest residential buildings in Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of architecture's digital turn, contemporary practices have taken up archaic, even "prehistoric," models for the practice of architecture and how it might develop trenchant relationships to contemporary audiences. Underneath a wildly diverse and variable set of appearances, Inscriptions: Architecture Before Speech reveals architectures that evince a stable and shared set of commitments to design as an act before speech--that is, they exceed the structural and semiotic propositions of the twentieth century which have long served as a point of beginning for the imagination of architectural thought itself. Featuring essays from Catherine Ingraham, Lucia Allais, Stan Allen, Phillip Denny, Edward Eigen, Sylvia Lavin, Antoine Picon, and Marrikka Trotter, Inscriptions rethinks architecture at the moment just before it is presupposed as the material of an indeterminably meaningful mark, the moment just before text becomes speech and before architecture becomes building--the site of inscription.

Book Architecture and Freedom

Download or read book Architecture and Freedom written by Owen Hopkins and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architects are facing a crisis of agency. For decades, they have seen their traditional role diminish in scope as more and more of their responsibilities have been taken over by other disciplines within the building construction industry. Once upon a time, we might have seen the architect as the conductor of the orchestra; now he or she is but one cog in a vast and increasingly complex machine. In an attempt to find a way out of this crisis, there is growing debate about how architects might reassert the importance of their role and influence. On one side of this argument are those who believe that architects must refocus their attention on the internal demands of the discipline. On the other are those who argue that architects must, instead, reacquaint themselves with what many still believe to be the discipline’s core mission of advancing social progress and promoting the public good, and at the same time the scope of their traditional disciplinary remit. At root, this question is fundamentally about freedom, about whether architects still possess it – if they have ever done – and whether it is possible to find the professional, disciplinary and individual autonomy to be able to define the spheres of their own practice. Presenting a variety of views and perspectives, this issue of AD takes us to the heart of what freedom means for architecture as it adapts and evolves in response to the changing contexts in which it is practised in the 21st century. Contributors include: Phillip Bernstein, Peggy Deamer, Adam Nathaniel Furman, Kate Goodwin, Charles Holland, Anna Minton, Patrik Schumacher, Alex Scott-Whitby, Ines Weizman, and Sarah Wigglesworth. Featured architects: Atelier Kite, ScottWhitbyStudio, C+S Architects, Anupama Kundoo, Noero Architects, Umbrellium, and Zaha Hadid Architects. Architects are facing a crisis of agency. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Green Obsession traces the long path that architect Stefano Boeri and his studio - Stefano Boeri Architetti - have followed in the last fifteen years of practice, aiming at the redefinition of the relationship between city and nature. The book follows a discursive thread, alternating dialogues and scientific essays by some of the main protagonists who have contributed to widening the perspective on this subject, helping to raise awareness while protecting the world and its biodiversity. Cities have contributed for centuries to the promotion of some of humanity’s greatest ideas, we must now urgently include them as among the principal players in the environmental debate and at the forefront of any policy tackling and countering – possibly reversing - climate change. Nevertheless, even today one of the most significant technologies capable of absorbing CO2 and restoring our environment is photosynthesis. Planting trees, in addition to protecting existing natural areas and biodiversity, together with de-carbonization, renewable energies, digitalization, smart mobility and the circular economy could be the set of strategies necessary to tackle climate change. Today the effects of the Anthropocene age are ever more visible, changing our environment and affecting every species that lives within it. Green Obsession offers a path to be taken, a hard but still necessary paradigm shift – even for architecture and urbanism – that aims to give a voice to this much needed ecological transition. This book aims to unveil the processes and the complexity involved in the search for a new kind of urbanism, while raising questions and opening old wounds related to the relationship between the human species and Nature and finally putting these fragments together to create a portrait of our era. We need to conceive cities as new green catalysts. Now more than ever, it is essential to act together as separate individuals and professionals, joining the cause as members of the global community with a shared environmental strategy. We all have to open the era of a new alliance between Nature and City. With Contributions from Emanuele Coccia, Jane Goodall, Paul Hawken, Cecil Konijnendijk, David Miller, Harini Nagendra, Giuseppe Sala and Giorgio Vacchiano."

This is also demonstrated in Bilbao?s various projects such as the architectural design of a pilgrimage route, a botanical garden in the Mexican main trading center Culiacán, and not least the Light of Line, which is intended to enable women in particular to move more safely in remote districts of the city. Book Inclusive Urbanization

Download or read book Inclusive Urbanization written by Krishna Shrestha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we include and represent all people in cities? As the world rapidly urbanizes, and climate change creates global winners and losers, understanding how to design cities that provide for all their citizens is of the utmost importance. Inclusive Urbanization attempts to not only provide meaningful, practical guidance to urban designers, managers, and local actors, but also create a definition of inclusion that incorporates strategies bigger than the welfare state, and tactics that bring local actors and the state into meaningful dialogue. Written by a team of experienced academics, designers, and NGO professionals, Inclusive Urbanization shows how urbanization policy and management can be used to make more inclusive, climate resilient cities, through a series of 18 case studies in South Asia. By creating a model of urban life and processes that takes into account social, spatial, cultural, regulatory and economic dimensions, the book finds a way to make both the processes and outcomes of urban design representative of all of the city’s inhabitants.

Emphasizing on the fact that apart from the preservation of vernacular architecture it is more important to carry forward the valuable lessons of the past into the future, the book presents myriad examples of contemporary architectural works and showcases how vernacular traditions can be reinterpreted to form contemporary buildings. Book Wang Shu Amateur Architecture Studio

Download or read book Wang Shu Amateur Architecture Studio written by Mette Marie Kallehauge and published by Lars Müller Publishers. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Wang Shu Amateur Architecture Studio is the first major book on the recent work of architect Wang Shu, Pritzker Price winner in 2012, and his wife Lu Wenyu. Together they have run Amateur Architecture Studio, based in Hangzhou, China, for nearly 20 years. At a time when Chinas explosive urbanization is making inroads into rural areas and leaving the marks of cheap concrete construction everywhere, Amateur Architecture Studio is keen to work against this tendency by reusing materials from the buildings that Chinese authorities are systematically tearing down. Amateur Architecture Studios working ways successfully represent socially conscious and sustainable new architecture. Wang Shus architecture reveals a thoughtful attitude toward both design and implementation, as well as the ability to react flexibly to the surroundings and history of a particular site. At heart, it comes down to preserving Chinese building customs and local awareness of material in a nation that is fast losing its building culture. The studios projects inhabit a fascinating field between allusions to traditional Chinese culture and large-scale modern architecture. This book is published on the occasion of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art exhibition in 2017 of Wang Shu and Amateur Architecture Studios work. Featuring a wealth of images by architecture photographer Iwan Baan this is a detailed and reflective guide to Amateur Architecture Studios projects, philosophy and methodology." -- Publicaciones Arquitectura y Arte.
