Book Workers Control in Latin America 1930 1979

Download or read book Workers Control in Latin America 1930 1979 written by Jonathan C. Brown and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years between 1930 and 1979 witnessed a period of intense labor activity in Latin America as workers participated in strikes, unionization efforts, and populist and revolutionary movements. The ten original essays AEMDNMOin this volume examine sugar mill seizures in Cuba, oil nationalization and railway strikes in Mexico, the attempted revolution in Guatemala, railway nationalization and Peronism in Argentina, Brazil's textile strikes, the Bolivian revolution of 1952, Peru's copper strikes, and the copper nationalization in Chile--all important national events in which industrial laborers played critical roles. Demonstrating an illuminating, bottom-up approach to Latin American labor history, these essays investigate the everyday acts through which workers attempted to assert more control over the work process and thereby add dignity to their lives. Working together, they were able to bring shop floor struggles to public attention and--at certain critical junctures--to influence events on a national scale. The contributors are Andrew Boeger, Michael Marconi Braga, Jonathan C. Brown, Josh DeWind, Marc Christian McLeod, Michael Snodgrass, Andrea Spears, Joanna Swanger, Maria Celina Tuozzo, and Joel Wolfe.

Book Immigration Research for a New Century

Download or read book Immigration Research for a New Century written by Nancy Foner and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2000-11-16 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid rise in immigration over the past few decades has transformed the American social landscape, while the need to understand its impact on society has led to a burgeoning research literature. Predominantly non-European and of varied cultural, social, and economic backgrounds, the new immigrants present analytic challenges that cannot be wholly met by traditional immigration studies. Immigration Research for a New Century demonstrates how sociology, anthropology, history, political science, economics, and other disciplines intersect to answer questions about today's immigrants. In Part I, leading scholars examine the emergence of an interdisciplinary body of work that incorporates such topics as the social construction of race, the importance of ethnic self-help and economic niches, the influence of migrant-homeland ties, and the types of solidarity and conflict found among migrant populations. The authors also explore the social and national origins of immigration scholars themselves, many of whom came of age in an era of civil rights and ethnic reaffirmation, and may also be immigrants or children of immigrants. Together these essays demonstrate how social change, new patterns of immigration, and the scholars' personal backgrounds have altered the scope and emphases of the research literature, allowing scholars to ask new questions and to see old problems in new ways. Part II contains the work of a new generation of immigrant scholars, reflecting the scope of a field bolstered by different disciplinary styles. These essays explore the complex variety of the immigrant experience, ranging from itinerant farmworkers to Silicon Valley engineers. The demands of the American labor force, ethnic, racial, and gender stereotyping, and state regulation are all shown to play important roles in the economic adaptation of immigrants. The ways in which immigrants participate politically, their relationships among themselves, their attitudes toward naturalization and citizenship, and their own sense of cultural identity are also addressed. Immigration Research for a New Century examines the complex effects that immigration has had not only on American society but on scholarship itself, and offers the fresh insights of a new generation of immigration researchers.

Book U S Mexican Economic Relations

Download or read book U S Mexican Economic Relations written by Khosrow Fatemi and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-08-12 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatemi's edited volume is a refreshing contribution to the already voluminous literature on US-Mexican economic relation. . . . This list is broad enough to provide an introduction to US-Mexican economic relations for the novice reader, while US-Mexico specialists will benefit from the analysis of current data and new perspectives on familiar issues. In short, a valuable addition to both academic and public library collections. Choice This volume examines the major issues facing the United States and Mexico as the two countries atempt to forge mutually acceptable economic relations. As Fatemi notes in his introduction, a great deal of interdependency--an `invisible integration'--does exist between the United States and Mexico. He adds that these relations are destined to expand in coming years, thus necessitating the satisfaction of economic, social, and political needs of each partner. These essays initiate this process via a balanced articulation of the diverse issues involved.

Book Mexico s Cold War

    Book Details:
  • Author : Renata Keller
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2015-07-28
  • ISBN : 1316352234
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Mexico s Cold War written by Renata Keller and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of the Cold War in Mexico, and Mexico in the Cold War. Renata Keller draws on declassified Mexican and US intelligence sources and Cuban diplomatic records to challenge earlier interpretations that depicted Mexico as a peaceful haven and a weak neighbor forced to submit to US pressure. Mexico did in fact suffer from the political and social turbulence that characterized the Cold War era in general, and by maintaining relations with Cuba it played a unique, and heretofore overlooked, role in the hemispheric Cold War. The Cuban Revolution was an especially destabilizing force in Mexico because Fidel Castro's dedication to many of the same nationalist and populist causes that the Mexican revolutionaries had originally pursued in the early twentieth century called attention to the fact that the government had abandoned those promises. A dynamic combination of domestic and international pressures thus initiated Mexico's Cold War and shaped its distinct evolution and outcomes.
