MI317—the government department devoted to defending Britain from cosmic horrors—is under siege, so Arthur Wallace and his team must travel to Area 51, ably—and oddly—assisted by Agent Gran. Book Anti Hero

Download or read book Anti Hero written by A.J. Lozier and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-25 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir of one man’s journey into, and out of, the movement that foreshadowed the modern-day “Antifa.” Between 1999-2005, as the nation convulsed with uncertainty over a contested election and the Sept. 11 attacks, A.J. Lozier attended and helped organize protests across the United States, as an active participant in the anarchist "black bloc," predecessor to the modern-day "Antifa." He was charged, tackled, swung at, shot at with rubber bullets, punched and, once, arrested. He did his fair of shoving too, all in the name of Anarchy, which he believed to be the only hope for a more peaceful and equitable society, in which capitalism was a thing of the past. This is no "behind the mask" exposé, but nor is it a work of unselfconscious propaganda. It is first and foremost a story, but one that charts how a pure-intentioned desire for peace and justice morphed into a mechanism for justifying any behavior. It is a story that foreshadows the Antifa we see today.

Book Heroes and Anti heroes in Medieval Romance

Download or read book Heroes and Anti heroes in Medieval Romance written by Neil Cartlidge and published by DS Brewer. This book was released on 2012 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations into the heroic - or not - behaviour of the protagonists of medieval romance. Medieval romances so insistently celebrate the triumphs of heroes and the discomfiture of villains that they discourage recognition of just how morally ambiguous, antisocial or even downright sinister their protagonists can be, and, correspondingly, of just how admirable or impressive their defeated opponents often are. This tension between the heroic and the antiheroic makes a major contribution to the dramatic complexity of medieval romance, but it is not an aspect of the genre that has been frequently discussed up until now. Focusing on fourteen distinct characters and character-types in medieval narrative, this book illustrates the range of different ways in which the imaginative power and appeal of romance-texts often depend on contradictions implicit in the very ideal of heroism. Dr Neil Cartlidge is Lecturer in English at the University of Durham. Book excerpt: The most interesting characters are almost never the good guys. Doing the right thing is great and all, but a little bit of darkness—or a lot of it—often makes for a more engaging story. Antiheroes: Heroes, Villains, and the Fine Line Between is dedicated to the dark heroes and sympathetic villains we love. Find out why William McKinley High's agonist Sue Sylvester is essential to Glee. Discover where your favorite comic book character falls on the continuum of good and evil. Weigh in on Twilight's very dangerous boy Edward Cullen: romantic, sparkly hero, or sociopath suffering from Antisocial Personality Disorder? Plus other essays on: • The Vampire Diaries' most antiheroic antihero, Damon Salvatore • America's favorite serial killer, Dexter Morgan, and the nature (and nurture) of evil • The curious appeal of Alias' Arvin Sloane • Supernatural's vampire hunter-cum-vampire Gordon Walker • The shared monstrosity of Spider-Man, Doc Ock, and the Green Goblin • Gun-slinging necromancer Anita Blake, and the benefits (and pitfalls) of embracing the monster within This brand new, e-book only collection of essays—"remixed" from previous Smart Pop series titles—gives a funny and thought-provoking in-depth look at the antihero, from the villains just a little too good to be unequivocal bad guys, and the heroes just a bit too bad to be truly good.

Book The Memoir of an Anti Hero

Download or read book The Memoir of an Anti Hero written by Kornel Filipowicz and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2019-10-03 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second World War. Poland. Our narrator has no intention of being a hero. He plans to survive this war, whatever it takes. Meticulously he recounts his experiences: the slow unravelling of national events as well as uncomfortable personal encounters on the street, in the café, at the office, in his love affairs. He is intimate but reserved; conversational but careful; reflective but determined. As he becomes increasingly and chillingly alienated from other people, the reader is drawn into complicit acquiescence. We are forced to consider what it means to be heroic and how we ourselves would behave in the same circumstances. Written in 1961, this is the masterpiece of one of the great Polish writers of the twentieth century.

This book was released on 2018-06-09 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scriptures and science fiction writers seem to agree, that when it comes to living, we find ourselves in a "lost and fallen" world and the "kipple" is ever-growing. To make matters worse, every one of us has within him or her a bad wolf at war with the good wolf. It doesn't seem to matter what our intentions are, whether we aspire to sainthood or the license to live as we please. The Anti-Hero & The Disciple is a collection of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. To some - on either side of the fence - this work might seem troubling. But the aim of this volume is to meet people where they are at, and to build bridges, to show how we are more the same than we are different, to shine hope in forgotten places. In this spirit, this book explores not only what it means to be a disciple of Christ in a fallen world, but a forlorn creature seeking solace in the belly of an indifferent world.

Book The New Female Antihero

Download or read book The New Female Antihero written by Sarah Hagelin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-01-25 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Female Antihero examines the hard-edged spies, ruthless queens, and entitled slackers of twenty-first-century television. The last ten years have seen a shift in television storytelling toward increasingly complex storylines and characters. In this study, Sarah Hagelin and Gillian Silverman zoom in on a key figure in this transformation: the archetype of the female antihero. Far from the sunny, sincere, plucky persona once demanded of female characters, the new female antihero is often selfish and deeply unlikeable. In this entertaining and insightful study, Hagelin and Silverman explore the meanings of this profound change in the role of women characters. In the dramas of the new millennium, they show, the female antihero is ambitious, conniving, even murderous; in comedies, she is self-centered, self-sabotaging, and anti-aspirational. Across genres, these female protagonists eschew the part of good girl or role model. In their rejection of social responsibility, female antiheroes thus represent a more profound threat to the status quo than do their male counterparts. From the devious schemers of Game of Thrones, The Americans, Scandal, and Homeland, to the joyful failures of Girls, Broad City, Insecure, and SMILF, female antiheroes register a deep ambivalence about the promises of liberal feminism. They push back against the myth of the modern-day super-woman—she who “has it all”—and in so doing, they give us new ways of imagining women’s lives in contemporary America.

With over 2 decades of complete absence between them, Nomad's primary concern is how to tell his first love about everything that transpired in between, and will she accept him for who he is and all he's done. It is the closing off of one avenue and the prospect of greener pastures with an old flame. It becomes a time to reflect. He lays his life bare. His extremely violent past, his insecurities, his sexual adventures and misadventures, his guilt, his hopes, the things that draw him, yet disturb him at the same time. We are introduced to a whirlwind of encounters, laced with numerous philosophical musings, which are generally flawless when stood up to scrutiny.
