It tackles the main theoretical issues, identifies a significant body of critical writing on the relationship between anthologies, literary history and the canon, and proposes an approach that might be designated Descriptive Anthology Studies. The author aims to achieve a full understanding of the role of anthologies in the literary polysystem. Moreover, this study considers anthologies published in Portugal in the early years of the twentieth-century, the influential figures who made them, the works they selected, and who read them. It also focuses on the principal publishing houses of the 1940s and 50s, and how their literary directors shaped public taste and promoted intercultural transfer. The author reveals tensions between conservative, nostalgic anthologies that promote an idyllic vision of rural Portugal, and collections of poems that question and challenge the status quo, whether in respect of the colonial wars or repressed female sexuality. The last part of the book explores anthology production in the period following the Revolution of 1974, observing the co-existence of traditional anthologising activity with new trends and innovations, and noting the role of women, both as anthologists and anthology items.

Book excerpt: Algo distingue a presente antologia de outras antologias de poesia portuguesa organizadas no passado: esta é a primeira antologia panorâmica que abarca a poesia portuguesa desde os seus alvores, na transição do século XII para o século XIII, cerca de seis décadas após o nascimento do Reino de Portugal, até ao presente, entendendo-se por presente o ano de 2008, data dos poemas mais recentes aqui recolhidos. Em consequência desta novidade, surge uma outra: a de ser esta a primeira vez que todo o arco temporal do século XX é objeto de um projeto antológico não exclusivo, isto é, nem temático, nem tendencioso. Por outras palavras, esta antologia, passe a redundância, começa no começo, e termina na atualidade. O que significa que, pela primeira vez, os leitores de poesia podem eles próprios, a partir de um único livro, produzir uma apreciação quer sobre a poesia escrita na totalidade do século XX, quer sobre as poéticas do século XX em confronto e diálogo entre si e com os diversos momentos da tradição poética portuguesa ao longo de oito séculos (mais em diálogo do que em confronto, assim cremos). Ou simplesmente fruir dos milhares de poemas aqui compilados, saltando de uns séculos para os outros, começando pelo princípio, pelo meio ou pelo fim, organizando um número indefinido de antologias pessoais. Nestas mais de 2000 páginas coexistem, diacronicamente, mais de 800 anos de poesia, desde a "Cantiga de Garvaia" de Pai Soares de Taveirós, datável do primeiro decénio do século XIII, até outubro de 2008, data do mais recente poema aqui incluído, "Rasto", de Luís Quintais.
