Book Hispanic Anthology

Download or read book Hispanic Anthology written by Thomas Walsh and published by . This book was released on 1920 with total page 834 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work is a summary of Spanish poetry, offered as a spontaneous tribute of affectionate admiration to the contemporaneous Spanish poet--both Peninsular and American--from his English-speaking brethren of the north. This anthology is also offered in the belief that it will greatly facilitate the work of the writer or lecturer on Spanish poetry who has been handicapped by the great difficulty in obtaining English versions adequate to illustrate his theme. For this person, or the student or general reader, the selections are arranged in chronological order, with extensively researched bibliographical notes. The translators have presented in English some of the greatest poets writing in Spanish, while preserving the beauties of this literature.

Book On the Edge of the River Sar

Download or read book On the Edge of the River Sar written by Rosalía de Castro and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first feminist translation of Rosalía de Castro’s seminal poetic anthology En las orillas del Sar [On the Edge of the River Sar] (1884). Rosalía de Castro (1837–1885) was an artist of vast poetic vision. Her understanding of human nature and her deep sensitivity to the injustices suffered by women and by such marginalized peoples as those of her native region, Galicia, are manifest in verses of universal yet rarely translated significance. An outspoken proponent of both women’s rights and her region’s cultural and political autonomy, Castro used her poetry as a vehicle through which to decry the crushing hardships both groups endured as Spain vaulted between progressive liberal and conservative reactionary political forces throughout the nineteenth century. Depending upon what faction held sway in the nation at any given time during Castro’s truncated literary career, her works were either revered as revolutionary or reviled as heretical for the views they espoused. Long after her death by uterine cancer in 1885, Castro was excluded from the pantheon of Spanish literature by Restoration society for her unorthodox views. Compellingly, the poet’s conceptualization of the individual and the national self as informed by gender, ethnicity, class, and language echoes contemporary scholars of cultural studies who seek to broaden present-day definitions of national identity through the incorporation of precisely these same phenomena. Thanks to the most recent works in Rosalian and Galician studies, we are now able to recuperate and reevaluate Rosalía de Castro’s poems in their original languages for the more radical symbolism and themes they foreground related to gender, sexuality, race and class as they inform individual and national identities. However, although Castro’s poetic corpus is widely accessible in its original languages, these important features of her verses have yet to be given voice in the small number of English translations of only a sub-set of her works that have been produced in the last century. As a result, our understanding of Castro’s potential contributions to contemporary world poetries, gender studies, Galician and more broadly cultural studies is woefully incomplete. An English translation of Castro’s works that is specifically feminist in its methodological orientation offers a unique and thought-provoking means by which to fill this void.

Book An Anthology of Nineteenth Century Women s Poetry from Spain

Download or read book An Anthology of Nineteenth Century Women s Poetry from Spain written by Anna-Marie Aldaz and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The woman poet...must sing, just as birds fly and rivers flow," wrote Carolina Coronado in 1846. In Spain of that time, a group of women had begun to publish poetry. Their verseRomantic, predominantly lyric, and often linked to liberal reformwas novel and controversial, because few women had ventured into print. The poets collected in this anthology asserted in different ways their imagination and literary voice. Susan Kirkpatrick provides an overview of the period, and Anna-Marie Aldaz adds a discussion of Spanish versification as well as biographical sketches of the twenty-one poets whose works bring alive the first decades of women's emergence as a force in the Spanish literary world.

Download or read book D as de lluvia written by Montserrat Lunati and published by Aris and Phillips Hispanic Cla. This book was released on 2018 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Writers, publishers, readers and scholars have stopped apologising for the short story: the genre is no longer a bad investment, a trial-exercise for a novel or a minor entertainment, as demonstrated by exceptional writers with an almost exclusive dedication to it, such as Jorge Luis Borges, Alice Munro, Quim Monzâo or Cristina Fernâandez Cubas. With deep roots in classic and medieval literatures, and great achievements in the nineteenth- and twentieth-centuries, the genre of the short story, which benefits from the linguistic tightness of poetry and the narrative comforts of the novel, has finally been recognised as having a (hybrid) identity of its own. This volume re-edits and expands a previous bilingual collection published in 1997. The first edition included stories by twelve writers: Pilar Cibreiro, Cristina Fernâandez Cubas, Paloma Dâiaz-Mas, Adelaida Garcâia Morales, Lourdes Ortiz, Laura Freixas, Marina Mayoral, Mercedes Abad, Rosa Montero, Maruja Torres, Soledad Puâertolas and Marâia Eugenia Salaverri. The present edition adds another four: Nuria Amat, Juana Salabert, Luisa Castro and Berta Marsâe. The stories gathered in this second edition were written between 1980 and 2010, and testify to the richness and vitality of women’s writing in contemporary Spain. With the original texts in Spanish as well as facing-page English translations, an Introduction, notes, and bio-bibliographical information on each author, this volume is a useful tool for students of the Spanish language and culture at all levels. It includes a selection of secondary reading on Spanish women writers and a selection of anthologies of Spanish short stories since 1997"--
