Book Antoine Favray 1706 1798

Download or read book Antoine Favray 1706 1798 written by Stephen Degiorgio and published by Midsea Books. This book was released on 2004 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a long-awaited comprehensive monograph on the artist, whose importance had already been established through numerous articles and past exhibitions. The two authors examined hundreds of works by Favray (and others attributed to him), both in Malta and overseas, and a vast number of these are reproduced in this book. The first four chapters of the book feature Favrays transition from Paris to Rome, his first Maltese stay, his Turkish Adventure, and his second Maltese sojourn respectively. Chapter 5 is devoted to his drawings, whilst in Chapter 6 his Followers and Discredits are discussed. The two authors join forces in bringing us this meticulously researched and excellently presented book, with Fiorentino being primarily responsible for the critical appraisal of Favrays oeuvre, and Degiorgio bringing to the fore his archival expertise and a large number of unpublished references. Stephen Degiorgio is a teacher and researcher, and for the last 25 years has researched the Archives of the Order of St. John held at the National Library of Malta. He has published monographs related to Maltese history in Monuments and The Malta Independent. Emmanuel Fiorentino is an art historian and critic. Since 1975 he has been the regular art critic for The Sunday Times of Malta, and has published numerous art related articles in local books and periodicals. In 1998 he organised the exhibition of drawings by Favray held at St. James Cavalier.

Book Defending the West

  • Author : Ibn Warraq
  • Publisher : Prometheus Books
  • Release : 2010-06-03
  • ISBN : 161592020X
  • Pages : 558 pages

Download or read book Defending the West written by Ibn Warraq and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first systematic critique of Edward Said's influential work, Orientalism, a book that for almost three decades has received wide acclaim, voluminous commentary, and translation into more than fifteen languages. Said's main thesis was that the Western image of the East was heavily biased by colonialist attitudes, racism, and more than two centuries of political exploitation. Although Said's critique was controversial, the impact of his ideas has been a pervasive rethinking of Western perceptions of Eastern cultures, plus a tendency to view all scholarship in Oriental Studies as tainted by considerations of power and prejudice. In this thorough reconsideration of Said's famous work, Ibn Warraq argues that Said's case against the West is seriously flawed. Warraq accuses Said of not only willfully misinterpreting the work of many scholars, but also of systematically misrepresenting Western civilization as a whole. With example after example, he shows that ever since the Greeks Western civilization has always had a strand in its very makeup that has accepted non-Westerners with open arms and has ever been open to foreign ideas. The author also criticizes Said for inadequate methodology, incoherent arguments, and a faulty historical understanding. He points out, not only Said's tendentious interpretations, but historical howlers that would make a sophomore blush. Warraq further looks at the destructive influence of Said's study on the history of Western painting, especially of the 19th century, and shows how, once again, the epigones of Said have succeeded in relegating thousands of first-class paintings to the lofts and storage rooms of major museums. An extended appendix reconsiders the value of 18th- and 19th-century Orientalist scholars and artists, whose work fell into disrepute as a result of Said's work.

Book Charles Gravier Comte de Vergennes

Download or read book Charles Gravier Comte de Vergennes written by Orville T. Murphy and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1983-06-30 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first complete study of Charles Gravier, Comte de Vergennes, one of the most distinguished diplomats and statesmen of eighteenth-century France. Vergennes represented France as a diplomat in Germany, Constantinople, and Stockholm, and was Louis XVI's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Orville Murphy traces Vergennes' career as he steadily rose from the provincial nobility of the robe to the ranks of the court aristocracy; from the post of an obscure diplomat to the lofty position of Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Murphy, however, has written much more than an interesting biography. The book develops a link between diplomatic personalities, the foreign policies of the French kings Louis XV and Louis XVI, and the contemporary social, economic, and political problems during much of the eighteenth century. Indeed, Vergennes and his policies are central to any study of the American Revolution, the underlying causes of the French Revolution, and of the subsequent "Age of Revolutions" in Europe.

Book excerpt: Philip Mansel's highly acclaimed history absorbingly charts the interaction between the vibrantly cosmopolitan capital of Constantinople - the city of the world's desire - and its ruling family. In 1453, Mehmed the Conqueror entered Constantinople on a white horse, beginning an Ottoman love affair with the city that lasted until 1924, when the last Caliph hurriedly left on the Orient Express. For almost five centuries Constantinople, with its enormous racial and cultural diversity, was the centre of the dramatic and often depraved story of an extraordinary dynasty.
