Book Antoine D Agata

Download or read book Antoine D Agata written by and published by RM Verlag. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 30 years, French photographer Antoine d'Agata (born 1961) has undertaken various journeys in Mexico. As a photographer, d'Agata tends to focus on societal taboos like addiction and prostitution, and embroil himself directly in these darker parts of human nature. "It's not how photographers look at the world that is important," d'Agata has remarked. "It's their intimate relationship with it." This book is a record of the photographer's Mexican travels, a tense, immobile diary of his experiences in the devastated landscapes of an increasingly volatile criminal society. Still images, cinematographic narratives and texts make up a personal diary that, through intimate, sexual and narcotic encounters, constructs an increasingly sickening reality. Mirroring his journey as he wanders through a lonely and marginal world, d'Agata's photographic language seems to fracture and degenerate page by page. As a whole, Mexico presents a complex, difficult portrait of a period that has been constructed as a time of lawlessness and criminality in Mexican society. D'Agata structures the book around six photographic movements, relating directly to different times in the contemporary history of Mexico. These chapters suggest ruptures in the continuity of history, even as D'Agata creates a narrative of descent into pain and savagery.

Book American Geography

    Book Details:
  • Author : Matt Black
  • Publisher : National Geographic Books
  • Release : 2021-12-07
  • ISBN : 0500545359
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book American Geography written by Matt Black and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning photographer Matt Black traveled over 100,000 miles to chronicle the reality of today’s unseen and forgotten America. When Magnum photographer Matt Black began exploring his hometown in California’s rural Central Valley—dubbed “the other California,” where one-third of the population lives in poverty—he knew what his next project had to be. Black was inspired to create a vivid portrait of an unknown America, to photograph some of the poorest communities across the US. Traveling across forty-six states and Puerto Rico, Black visited designated “poverty areas,” places with a poverty rate above 20 percent, and found that poverty areas are so numerous that they’re never more than a two-hour’s drive apart, woven through the fabric of the country but cut off from “the land of opportunity.” American Geography is a visual record of this five-year, 100,000-mile road trip, which chronicles the vulnerable conditions faced by America’s poor. This compelling compilation of black-and-white photographs is accompanied by Black’s own travelogue—a collection of observations, overheard conversations in cafe´s and public transportation, diner menus, bus timetables, historical facts, and snippets from daily news reports. A future classic of photography, this monograph is supported by an international touring exhibition and is a must-have for anyone with an interest in witnessing the reality of an America that’s been excluded from the American Dream.

Book The Cambodian Room

Download or read book The Cambodian Room written by Tommaso Lusena de Sarmiento and published by Contrasto Due. This book was released on 2013-01-07 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnum photographer Antoine DAgata has become a little too intimate with the subject of his photo series. In order to get to know the seamy side of Cambodia, he goes to the end of the end. In Phnom Penh, he moves in with a drug-addicted prostitute named Lee, who not only allows DAgata to photograph her, but shares her crack pipe and her bed with him as well. When she asks him what he really wants from her, he admits that he hopes the pictures will earn him money. DAgata has been throwing himself into projects like this for twenty years now, despite the fact that he is blind in his right eye and myopic in his left. This has not stood in the way of his career as a photographer of the subclass. On the contrary, Its the darkness that brought me up. The film camera employs a similar observational yet alienating style, following the couple from up close while they spend weeks in a stuffy room, in voluntary confinement. The claustrophobic atmosphere of this documentary debut is interspersed with gruesome street shots and uncompromising photos by DAgata, who has increasing doubts about his profession as a photographer. Journalist Philippe Azoury is worried and comes for a visit, forcing DAgata to question his unorthodox working method. Together, they discuss the emotional life that underlies the photographers work.

Book Takashi Homma Tokyo and My Daughter

Book excerpt: This short and sweet--and astonishingly beautiful--book of photographs by the Tokyo-born and based Takashi Homma features 32 color images, primarily of the artist's daughter, although there are also some cityscapes and interiors that round out the story with perfect pitch. Homma offers an extremely well calibrated selection of images of his daughter from her first months to about age six: we see her sitting in her high chair; at a picnic; peeking through the car window; and taking some pictures of her own. Luminous, loving and relaxed, these portraits welcome the reader into the artist's inner world without giving anything away. "Tokyo and My Daughter," featuring one of the best family dog pictures ever, is published in the same series as Nieves' "Kim Gordon: Chronicles Vol.1, Mike Mills: Humans," and "Yukari Miyagi: Rabbit & Turtle." Homma has published his work in many international magazines and exhibited worldwide.

Book Many are Called

  • Author : Walker Evans
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2004-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780300106176
  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Many are Called written by Walker Evans and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1936 and 1941 Walker Evans and James Agee collaborated on one of the most provocative books in American literature, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941). While at work on this book, the two also conceived another less well-known but equally important book project entitled Many Are Called. This three-year photographic study of subway passengers made with a hidden camera was first published in 1966, with an introduction written by Agee in 1940. Long out of print, Many Are Called is now being reissued with a new foreword and afterword and with exquisitely reproduced images from newly prepared digital scans. Many Are Called came to fruition at a slow pace. In 1938, Walker Evans began surreptitiously photographing people on the New York City subway. With his camera hidden in his coat—the lens peeking through a buttonhole—he captured the faces of riders hurtling through the dark tunnels, wrapped in their own private thoughts. By 1940-41, Evans had made over six hundred photographs and had begun to edit the series. The book remained unpublished until 1966 when The Museum of Modern Art mounted an exhibition of Evans’s subway portraits. This beautiful new edition—published in the centenary year of the NYC subway—is an essential book for all admirers of Evans’s unparalleled photographs, Agee’s elegant prose, and the great City of New York.

Book Georgian Spring

Book excerpt: Ex-cop Winnie Farlowe has been retired from police work due to a back injury, and has been fighting the bottle instead of bad guys ever since. But suddenly he meets Tess Binder, a stunning, three-time divorcée from the Balboa Bay Club where wallets are fat, bikinis are skimpy, and cosmetic surgery is one sure way to a billionaire's bank account. She believes her father's suicide was actually a murder and wants Winnie to help her prove it. Death and chicanery flourish amidst ranches, mansions, and yachting parties. Publishers Weekly called it "comic and deeply moving . . . a stupendous climax . . . virtually sure to be hailed as Wambaugh's best." And the San Diego Union-Tribune said, "a profoundly serious work and in reading it I laughed my head off."

Book Chien Chi Chang Jet Lag

Download or read book Chien Chi Chang Jet Lag written by Chien-Chi Chang and published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Today is Monday, so this must be Zurich.' For those who travel a lot, the world becomes a steel-and-concrete construct of interchangeable flight crews, hotel rooms, and check-in counters. In this jet-setting life, the most important thing is that the power adapter fits. For Jet Lag, award-winning photographer Chien-Chi Chang (*1961 in Taiwan) has created succinct black-and-white images of globalized disconnect. In these photographs, reality is less a touchstone than a distraction: the crucial space is 'between'. Planes and beds and flickering screens provide the only continuity, and there is little human warmth except the body heat of the passenger in the next seat and the sounds coming through the wall from the adjacent room. Chien-Chi Chang has been a member of Magnum Photos since 2001. His several series about alienation - in mental states, in marriage, in nationality - have been exhibited throughout the world, creating a sensation in 2001 and 2009 at the Venice Biennale.

Book excerpt: This fascinating book tells the story of Irina Popova's stay with a family of drug-users in St. Petersburg, Russia. The photo story - focusing on a small child living in shocking family circumstances - has provoked an explosion of criticism on the Internet, directed towards the parents as well as at the photographer. The book reveals the documentary evidence during the development of the story, including the previously unpublished photos from the archives of the photographer herself and the characters, the web pages of blogs with comments, the private letters and the diaries. It attempts to analyze the consequences of the photographer's actions and the degree of responsibility of the photographer. The multivocal storytelling in the book forms the screenplay for a real-life drama. This is the first time this frequently discussed topic of the supposed responsibility of documentary photographers has been analyzed so consistently and comprehensively in book form. This book is therefore more than simply a documentary photo book depicting the deplorable situation of a drug addict family - it is an essential document dealing with the question all documentary photographers may be confronted with at some time in their careers: can I continue working of should I stop and try to help solve the problem In am witness to?
