The Royal Naval Air Service invested heavily in aircraft of all types—aeroplanes, seaplanes, airships, and kite balloons—in order to counter the German U-boats. Under the Royal Air Force, the air campaign against U-boats continued uninterrupted. Aircraft bombed German U-boat bases in Flanders, conducted area and ‘hunting’ patrols around the coasts of Britain, and escorted merchant convoys to safety. Despite the fact that aircraft acting alone destroyed only one U-boat during the war, the overall contribution of naval aviation to foiling U-boat attacks was significant. Only five merchant vessels succumbed to submarine attack when convoyed by a combined air and surface escort during World War I. This book examines aircraft and weapons technology, aircrew training, and the aircraft production issues that shaped this campaign. Then, a close examination of anti-submarine operations—bombing, patrols, and escort—yields a significantly different judgment from existing interpretations of these operations. This study is the first to take an objective look at the writing and publication of the naval and air official histories as they told the story of naval aviation during the Great War. The author also examines the German view of aircraft effectiveness, through German actions, prisoner interrogations, official histories, and memoirs, to provide a comparative judgment. The conclusion closes with a brief narrative of post-war air anti-submarine developments and a summary of findings. Overall, the author concludes that despite the challenges of organization, training, and production the employment of aircraft against U-boats was largely successful during the Great War. In the 1950s, with the advent of the Grumman S2F Tracker airplane, the HSS-1 Seabat helicopter and nine dedicated Essex Class aircraft carriers, Anti-Submarine Warfare provided a powerful force to throw against the submarine threats that were developing. Carrier Air Groups became the norm, as the fixed-wing and helicopters were increasingly kept together for the training cycles and cruises to foreign waters. The airmen of CVSG-57 lived in a much different time, when defending the United States of America couldn't be done by a computer in the cockpit. Every seaman on the ship was needed to keep the ship sailing and the aircraft flying. Pilots used all their training and experience, sometimes making it to safety only because they were unwilling to give in, knowing the slightest miscalculation or poor judgment could mean disaster. Many of the stories collected around the last CVSG-57 reunion relate to the "peace keeping" deployments on the USS Hornet, CVS-12, for the personnel of fixed-wing squadrons VS-35 and VS-37; helicopter squadron HS-2; detachments from VAW-11 and VAW-13 (early warning squadrons) and H&MS-15 (Marine detachment intercept/attack squadron). Conceived as a replacement for the P-2 Neptune and P-5 Marlin, the P-3 first flew in 1961. It was loosely based on the design of the Lockheed L-188 Electra passenger aircraft. Equipped with four Allison T56 turboprop engines, the P-3 has the speed of a fast propeller-powered fighter and a range of nearly 2,400 nautical miles. It can remain on station at 1500 feet for three hours with a range of 1,300 nm. The aircraft typically carries a crew of three pilots, two naval flight officers, two flight engineers, three sensor operators and a technician. Armament typically includes up to 20,000 pounds of missiles including the AGM-84 Harpoon, AGM-84E SLAM, AGM-84H/K and AGM-65F Maverick. The P-3 has provided reliable service to the U.S. and other navies including Germany, Japan, Canada, and South Korea. In addition to Cold War submarine tracking, its missions have included enforcing the blockade of Cuba during the 1962 crisis, coastal patrols in the Vietnam War, and targeting of Iraqi naval elements during the Gulf War. Over several decades of service, the P-3 has received several major updates, and more than forty variants have been developed. It is expected to remain in service for the U.S. Navy until at least 2013 when the P-8 Poseidon begins deployment. This P-3 Orion pilot's manual was originally "restricted". It has been declassified and has now been reprinted in books form.
