Download or read book Antiquitates Apostolic Vol 1 written by William Cave and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Antiquitates Apostolicae, Vol. 1: Or the Lives, Acts, and Martyrdoms of the Holy Apostles of Our Saviour We would gather from this, that a biographer of the apostles, and their first successors, has a wide field open to him which he may traverse with safety and profit; but at the same time imposing on him this strict and uniformly applicable rule, that that species of traditional information only is to be made use of, which is found adopted by those who lived at a period sufiicientl y near the apostolic times to judge of its origin and its authors. Taking this as a primary principle in the selection of in cidents, and in every instance examining them by the rule of analogy and verisimilitude, there will be little danger of our adopting any of those weak inventions by which the superstition of former ages was amused and fostered. Once, indeed, Eusebius2 makes our St. James one of the seventy, though elsewhere quoting a place of Clemens of Alexandria, he numbers him with the chief of the apostles, and expressly distin guishes him from the seventy disciples. 3 Nay, St. Jerome, ' though when representing the opinion of others he styles him the thirteenth apostle, yet elsewhere, 5 when speaking his own sense, sufficiently proves that there were but two, James the son of Zebedee, and the other the son of Alphwus; the one sirnamed the greater, the other the less. Be sides that the main support of the other opinion is built upon the authority of Clemens's Recogni tions, a book in doubtful cases of no esteem and value. Book The Apostolic Fathers Vol 1

Download or read book The Apostolic Fathers Vol 1 written by Edward Burton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostolic Fathers, Vol. 1: The Epistles of Ss; Clement of Rome and Barnabas and the Shepherd of Hermas Three. The next will comprise the remainder. How far we may accept the genuineness of the Epistles, their claim to be the work of the writers whose names they bear, will be discussed in the Introduction to each as it comes. That they all belong to the period we have named, let the authors be whom they may, is an indisputable fact. The translation which is offered to the reader is that of Archbishop Wake, with the exception of some portions of the Epistles of Clement. That exception may as well be explained here instead of in the Introduction to St Clement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In the preface of his work on God and the Bible, the late Mr. Arnold pronounces Ferdinand Chris tian Baur an unsafe guide because of the 'vigour and rigour' characteristic of. Most German Biblical critics. Weizsacker compares very favourably with Baur in this respect. There is plenty of vigour in his book, but not nearly so much of the rigour of which Mr. Arnold. Book The Apostolic Age of the Christian Church

Download or read book The Apostolic Age of the Christian Church written by Carl von Weizsäcker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostolic Age of the Christian Church, Vol. 1 The new series of translations by Messrs. Williams and Norgate auspiciously begins with Weizsacker's great work on the Apostolic Age, of which the first volume now appears. This work is confessedly of exceptional value, exhibiting as it does not merely the learning we expect in a first-class German author, but a moderation and soundness of judgment which are by no means common either in Germany or anywhere else. It has the merit of being not only able and masterly, but extremely interesting, discussing a multitude of questions relating to the origin of the Christian Church in a manner fitted to engage the attention of general readers not less than of professional theologians. The style is luminous and easy, and the pages are not encumbered with learned foot-notes. On some subjects, as, e.g., the Resurrection of Christ and the historical value of the Book of Acts, readers may meet with views from which they earnestly dissent. Book Abandoned to Lust

  • Author : Jennifer Wright Knust
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 0231136625
  • Pages : 302 pages

Download or read book Abandoned to Lust written by Jennifer Wright Knust and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Christians used charges of adultery, incest, and lascivious behavior to demonize their opponents, police insiders, resist pagan rulers, and define what it meant to be a Christian. Christians frequently claimed that they, and they alone were sexually virtuous, comparing themselves to those marked as outsiders, especially non-believers and "heretics," who were said to be controlled by lust and unable to rein in their carnal desires. True or not, these charges allowed Christians to present themselves as different from and morally superior to those around them. Through careful, innovative readings, Jennifer Knust explores the writings of Paul, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus of Lyons, and other early Christian authors who argued that Christ alone made self-mastery possible. Rejection of Christ led to both immoral sexual behavior and, ultimately, alienation and punishment from God. Knust considers how Christian writers participated in a long tradition of rhetorical invective, a rhetoric that was often employed to defend status and difference. Christians borrowed, deployed, and reconfigured classical rhetorical techniques, turning them against their rulers to undercut their moral and political authority. Knust also examines the use of accusations of licentiousness in conflicts between rival groups of Christians. Portraying rival sects as depraved allowed accusers to claim their own group as representative of "true Christianity." Knust's book also reveals the ways in which sexual slurs and their use in early Christian writings reflected cultural and gendered assumptions about what constituted purity, morality, and truth. In doing so, Abandoned to Lust highlights the complex interrelationships between sex, gender, and sexuality within the classical, biblical, and early-Christian traditions.
