Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Antique Greek Dance, After Sculptured and Painted Figures Without the assistance of Dr. Marey, member of the Institute, and of M. Hansen, Master of the Ballet of the Opera, I should have lacked much of the material for this work. M. Hansen, who unites great learning with a charming personality, consented to give me his opinion of each of the representations of movements shown on the vases and bas-reliefs which I have used; he even went further, he gave me the benefit of his experience in the analysis of these movements by photography. To Dr. Marey I am indebted for help in my arrangement of the series of figures which form the basis of this work. I beg them to accept my profound thanks. With my whole heart I thank M. Croiset, member of the Institute, whose advice was most valuable; M. Collignon, member of the Institute, who permitted me to ask his assistance in classifying the paintings and sculptures; M. Pettier, of the Louvre Museum, who not only opened the glass cases there, but who gave me the benefit of his erudition; M. Miintz, member of the Institute, archivist of the School of the Beaux-Arts; M.de Chantepie, administrator of the Library of the Sorbonne, and his collaborators, MM. Chatelain, Lehot, Mortet, who, in their great kindness, made themselves as the instruments of toil in my hands; M. Nuitter, archivist of the Opera, who put me in communication with many interesting manuscripts; M. Babelon, curator of the Cabinet of Medals, through whom I am enabled to publish some hitherto unpublished types of antique dancers. I express my gratitude toM. Havet, member of the Institute, who made me welcome at all times when I was in need of his advice. I would testify to the inspiration which I received from M. Bourgault-Ducoudray's lessons on the history of music. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Maurice Emmanuel was a French composer and musicologist. He spent his childhood in Burgundy, where the beautiful landscape instilled in him a love of nature and the visual arts, which was encouraged by his mother, a skilled artist. Emmanuel studied at both the Paris Conservatoire and the Sorbonne where he studied classics, poetics, philology and history of art. In 1896, after a viva voce examination involving dancers from the Opera and ambitious projections by the chronophotographer Jules Marey, Emmanuel was awarded the doctorat es lettres for his thesis on ancient Greek dance. Emmanuel extended this thesis into The Antique Greek Dance, a comprehensive study which stressed the freedom and eurhythmic qualities of the dance: this, its first English translation was published in 1916. It was the first serious study of the subject and was a major influence on many dance works of the twentieth century, most notably Frederick Ashton's Daphnis and Chloe.

Book Attractive Performances

Download or read book Attractive Performances written by F. G Naerebout and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-07-17 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not another history of the dance in ancient Greece, but wants to lay the groundwork on which such a history should properly be build. The three preliminary studies offered here are, first, an extensive historiography of the subject which seeks to illuminate where we stand at present in reference to the large amount of work done on ancient Greek dance for the past 500 years. Secondly, an exercise in source criticism, embracing both texts and imagery, in order to establish the limits to which we can push any investigation, and thirdly, an attempt at model building to provide an explicit theoretical framework for future research. This is the first time that some of the approaches of the new dance scholarship which has arisen during the past few decades have been systematically applied to the dancing of the ancient world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performing Antiquity: Ancient Greek Music and Dance from Paris to Delphi, 1890-1930 investigates collaborations between French and American scholars of Greek antiquity (archaeologists, philologists, classicists, and musicologists), and the performing artists (dancers, composers, choreographers and musicians) who brought their research to life at the birth of Modernism. The book tells the story of performances taking place at academic conferences, the Paris Op ra, ancient amphitheaters in Delphi, and private homes. These musical and dance collaborations are built on reciprocity: the performers gain new insight into their craft while learning new techniques or repertoire and the scholars gain an opportunity to bring theory into experimental practice, that is, they have a chance see/hear/experience what they have studied and imagined. The performers receive the imprimatur of scholarship, the stamp of authenticity, and validation for their creative activities. Drawing from methods and theory from musicology, dance studies, performance studies, queer studies, archaeology, classics and art history the book shows how new scholarly methods and technologies altered the performance, and, ultimately, the reception of music and dance of the past. Acknowledging and critically examining the complex relationships performers and scholars had with the pasts they studied does not undermine their work. Rather, understanding our own limits, biases, dreams, obsessions, desires, loves, and fears enriches the ways we perform the past.

Book The Ancient Dancer in the Modern World

Download or read book The Ancient Dancer in the Modern World written by Fiona Macintosh and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the eighteenth-century choreographer Jean-Georges Noverre sought to develop what is now known as modern ballet, he turned to ancient pantomime as his source of inspiration; and when Isadora Duncan and her contemporaries looked for alternatives to the strictures of classical ballet, they looked to ancient Greek vases for models for what they termed 'natural' movement. This is the first book to examine systematically the long history of the impact of ideas about ancient Greek and Roman dance on modern theatrical and choreographic practices. With contributions from eminent classical scholars, dance historians, theatre specialists, modern literary critics, and art historians, as well as from contemporary practitioners, it offers a very wide conspectus on an under-explored but central aspect of classical reception, dance and theatre history, and the history of ideas.
