Book Electromagnetic Extraction and Annihilation of Antiprotons for Spacecraft Propulsion

Download or read book Electromagnetic Extraction and Annihilation of Antiprotons for Spacecraft Propulsion written by Daniel Antonio Zayas and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel concept for the extraction and long-term trapping of antiprotons from planetary magnetospheres is developed. The excitation via rotating magnetic field of an electron population within a distributed neutral plasma is shown to produce a large-scale magnetic field approximating a dipole with r-2 or slower decay. These shallow field gradients are, in turn, found to suppress the natural tendency of the magnetic dipole field to shield against incident particle fluxes. Particle transport and plasma interaction models are developed and used to compare collection performance against various electrostatic and magnetostatic collection systems. Baseline system architectures are presented, and antiproton collection rates on the order of nanograms per day are estimated, far exceeding current Earth-based production rates. To demonstrate the performance potential of antiproton fuels for spacecraft propulsion, a modified rocket equation with relativistic corrections and variable mass-energy conversion efficiency is derived. Antimatter engines operating via the catalysis of nuclear fission in a fissile material by antiprotons are found to be three to four (3 - 4) times more efficient than traditional proton-antiproton annihilation or "beam-core" engines, and vastly more efficient than conventional chemical and electric propulsion systems. Baseline architectures for various missions are presented.

Book Physics of Antimatter matter Reactions for Interstellar Propulsion

Download or read book Physics of Antimatter matter Reactions for Interstellar Propulsion written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the stage of the antiproton-nucleon annihilation chain of events relevant to propulsion the annihilation produces energetic charged pions and gamma rays. If annihilation occurs in a complex nucleus, protons, neutrons, and other nuclear fragments are also produced. The charge, number, and energy of the annihilation products are such that annihilation rocket engine concepts involving relatively low specific impulse (I/sub sp/ approx. = 1000 to 2000 s) and very high I/sub sp/ (3 x 107 s) appear feasible and have efficiencies on the order of 50% for annihilation energy to propulsion energy conversion. At I/sub sp/'s of around 15,000 s, however, it may be that only the kinetic energy of the charged nuclear fragments can be utilized for propulsion in engines of ordinary size. An estimate of this kinetic energy was made from known pieces of experimental and theoretical information. Its value is about 10% of the annihilation energy. Control over the mean penetration depth of protons into matter prior to annihilation is necessary so that annihilation occurs in the proper region within the engine. Control is possible by varying the antiproton kinetic energy to obtain a suitable annihilation cross section. The annihilation cross section at low energies is on the order of or larger than atomic areas due to a rearrangement reaction, but it is very low at high energy where its value is closer to nuclear areas.

Book Annihilation of Antiprotons in Heavy Nuclei

Download or read book Annihilation of Antiprotons in Heavy Nuclei written by David L Morgan (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature survey was conducted to find information relevant to the annihilation of a low energy (sub MeV) antiproton in a heavy nucleus. Such information is important to the use of nuclear fragments from the annihilation to heat a working fluid for space propulsion. The particular piece of information desired was the fraction of annihilation energy that becomes the kinetic energy of charged nuclear fragments emitted after annihilation. The experimental and theoretical information located was sufficient to allow calculation of that energy fraction. Its value is about 10% for nuclei as heavy as silicon or greater and 20% for very heavy nuclei when the energy of fission fragments is included. Both values are less than a fraction of annihilation energy (38%) that becomes the kinetic energy of charged pions from the annihilation of an antiproton with a proton (hydrogen nucleus). These values are relevant to the choice of a working fluid that absorbs a portion of the annihilation energy and forms the exhaust for a rocket powered by antiproton annihilation. Althouth it is easier to couple the energy of charged nuclear fragments to the working fluid, the higher energy fraction for the charged pions makes hydrogen more attractive as the working fluid. It is therefore important to investigate possible means for efficient transfer of the pion energy to the working fluid.

Book Antiproton Hydrogen Atom Annihilation

Download or read book Antiproton Hydrogen Atom Annihilation written by David L Morgan (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For antiproton energies of several eV or less annihilation in matter occurs through atomic rearrangement processes in which the antiproton becomes bound to a nucleus prior to annihilation. Annihilation cross sections via rearrangement at such energies are much higher than for direct antiproton nucleon annihilation and are therefore of consequence to antiproton annihilation propulsion of space craft. Existing calculations of the antiproton-hydrogen atom rearrangement cross section are semiclassical and employ the Born Oppenheimer approximation. They also employ various arguments in regard to the behavior of the system when the Born Oppenheimer approximation breaks down at small antiproton-proton separations. These arguments indicate that rearrangement is essentially irreversible. In the present study, a detailed investigation was made of the antiproton-hydrogen atom system when the Born Oppenheimer approximation breaks down. The results of this study indicate that the previous arguments were approximately correct, but that there is a significant probability for rearrangement reversing prior to annihilation. This probability is estimated to be about 20%. This consequent reduction in annihilation cross section has little or no negative consequences for antiproton annihilation propulsion at the present time. However, because of the approximate nature of this result and because more accurate values will be required in the future, it is important to conduct an accurate, fully quantum mechanical calculation of antiproton-hydrogen atom rearrangement.
