Book Religion Society and Culture in Colombia

Download or read book Religion Society and Culture in Colombia written by Patricia Londoño-Vega and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2002-04-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first detailed scholarly study of culture and sociability in Colombia during the period c. 1850 and 1930. Patricia Londoño-Vega gives a vivid picture of some of the factors that reduced social distances in the province of Antioquia during this period of relative harmony and prosperity. She examines hundreds of the groups and voluntary associations which flourished at this time and which brought a growing number of Antioqueños of different social backgrounds together around religious practices and societies, the exercising of charity, a concern for education, and the pursuit of cultural progress. The book describes the crucial role played by religion and the Catholic Church, which underwent considerable growth after the turbulent period of mid-nineteenth century liberal reforms until the end of the conservative era in 1930, and traces the progress of parishes, devotional associations, religious communities, private and public religiosity, and numeros pilanthropic societies, all of which brought about the bonds between the classes. The author examines achievements in education and the emergence of a thriving gamut of literary groups, public libraries, social clubs, and other assciations created to promote public instuction, pedagogy, manners, temperance, 'cultivated' music, and moral improvement. These cultural associations strove towards the longed-for civilisation, as percieved in its prevalent Western connotations. The social intermingling brought about by all these forms of sociability did not of course abolish class distinctions, but did generate a complex and closely integrated society, with an optimistic and constructive view of itself. The description of social and cultural dynamism, set against the background of growing religiiosity, challenges the seldom-discussed assumption that religion slowed down social and cultural modernisation. Primary evidence, drawn from extensive researh in proceedings and reports by groups, associations, periodical publications, statistics, diaries and memoirs, travellers' accounts, books of etiquette, genre literature and other contemporary publications, as well as visual images, particulary photographs, document important topics which have in the past attracted little attention from scholars.

Book excerpt: Between 1946 and 1966a surge of violence in Colombia left 200,000 dead in one of the worst conflicts the western hemisphere has ever experienced. the first seven years of this little-studied period of terror, known as la Violencia, is the subject of Blood and Fire. Scholars have traditionally assumed that partisan politics drove La Violencia, but Mary Roldán challenges earlier assessments by providing a nuanced account of the political and cultural motives behind the fratricide. Although the author acknowledges that partisan animosities played an important role in the disintegration of peaceful discourse into violence, she argues that conventional political conflicts were intensified by other concerns. Through an analysis of the evolution of violence in Antioquia, which at the time was the wealthiest and most economically diverse region of Colombia, Roldán demonstrates how tensions between regional politicians and the weak central state, diverse forms of social prejudice, and processes of economic development combined to make violence a preferred mode of political action. Privatization of state violence into paramilitary units and the emergence of armed resistance movements exacted a horrible cost on Colombian civic life, and these processes continue to plague the country. Roldan’s reading of the historical events suggests that Antioquia’s experience of la Violencia was the culmination of a brand of internal colonialism in which regional identity formation based on assumptions of cultural superiority was used to justify violence against racial or ethnic "others" and as a pretext to seize land and natural resources. Blood and Fire demonstrates that, far from being a peculiarity of the Colombians, la Violencia was a logical product of capitalist development and state formation in the modern world. This is the first study to analyze intersections of ethnicity, geography, and class to explore the genesis of Colombian violence, and it has implications for the study of repression in many other nations.

Book Education Reform in Antioquia

Download or read book Education Reform in Antioquia written by Marha Laverde and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faced with alarming results, the Government of Antioquia, oversaw the preparation of the Quality Improvement for Basic Education Project by the Secretariat of Education and Culture, which together with the Pasto Project, this Bank operation covered the neediest municipalities, and, was among the first decentralized education loans in the country and, indeed, in the Latin America region. This note examines the project that encouraged the decentralization of educational services, and closer coordination between the Department of Antioquia, the mayors, and members of the municipal councils. This is particularly impressive considering that these changes were introduced prior to the enactment of the new decentralization law (Law 715 of 2001). Its positive results allowed Antioquia to share some useful lessons with the rest of the country, notably that decentralization can work when there is sufficient support facilitate the management of the education system investment, in its development at the level of the department, and municipalities. To facilitate the replication of this experience, the project team designed, and applied a Participative-Collaborative Technical Assistance model. Some innovative approaches were also adopted to address the prevailing, low coverage rates, which included "hiring" school places from private, non-profit schools run by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and rationalizing teacher deployment and student-teacher ratios. The evaluation of the project revealed that the private sector schools, contracted by the Department were able to continue offering quality educational services, and, the project was instrumental in empowering all actors in the education community, and in ensuring the smooth implementation of the quality improvement actions. The education culture has been affected positively in Antioquia; society has become aware that investment, and public attention in this area is the best way to achieve social and economic progress, and thus face the challenges of a changing and globally competitive world.
