Book The Archaeology of Etruscan Society

Download or read book The Archaeology of Etruscan Society written by Vedia Izzet and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-12-13 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late sixth century was a period of considerable change in Etruria; this change is traditionally seen as the adoption of superior models from Greece. In a re-alignment of agency, this book examines a wide range of Etruscan material culture - mirrors, tombs, sanctuaries, houses and cities - in order to demonstrate the importance of local concerns in the formation of Etruscan material culture. Drawing on theoretical developments, the book emphasises the deliberate nature of the smallest of changes in material culture form, and develops the concept of surface as a unifying key to understanding the changes in the ways Etruscans represented themselves in life and death. This concept allows a uniquely holistic approach to the archaeology of Etruscan society and has the potential for other archaeological investigations. The book will interest all scholars and students of classical archaeology.

  • ISBN : 1606064525

Download or read book Principles of Art History written by Heinrich Wolfflin and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Art History by Heinrich Wölfflin (1864–1945), a revolutionary attempt to construct a science of art through the study of the development of style, has been a foundational work of formalist art history since it was first published in 1915. At once systematic and subjective, and remarkable for its compelling descriptions of works of art, Wölfflin’s text has endured as an accessible yet rigorous approach to the study of style. Although Wölfflin applied his analysis to objects of early modern European art, Principles of Art History has been a fixture in the theoretical and methodological debates of the discipline of art history and has found a global audience. With translations in twenty-four languages and many reprints, Wölfflin’s work may be the most widely read and translated book of art history ever. This new English translation, appearing one hundred years after the original publication, returns readers to Wölfflin’s 1915 text and images. It also includes the first English translations of the prefaces and afterword that Wölfflin himself added to later editions. Introductory essays provide a historical and critical framework, referencing debates engendered byPrinciples in the twentieth century for a renewed reading of the text in the twenty-first.

It examines the historical role of the cultural in architectural production and expression, looking at meaning and communication, tracing the formations of cultural identities. These are as diverse as the designs they inspire and include religious, mythic, poetic, political, and philosophical references.

Book House and Society in the Ancient Greek World

Download or read book House and Society in the Ancient Greek World written by Lisa C. Nevett and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-05-10 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1999 book re-examines traditional assumptions about the nature of social relationships in Greek households during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Through detailed exploration of archaeological evidence from individual houses, Lisa Nevett identifies a recognisable concept of the citizen household as a social unit, and suggests that this was present in numerous Greek cities. She argues that in such households relations between men and women, traditionally perceived as dominating the domestic environment, should be placed within the wider context of domestic activity. Although gender was an important cultural factor which helped to shape the organisation of the house, this was balanced against other influences, notably the relationship between household members and outsiders. At the same time the role of the household in relation to the wider social structures of the polis, or city state, changed rapidly through time, with the house itself coming to represent an important symbol of personal prestige.
