Book Sallust s Bellum Catilinae

Download or read book Sallust s Bellum Catilinae written by J. T. Ramsey and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-27 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his Bellum Catilinae, C. Sallustius Crispus or Sallust (86-35/34 B.C.) recounts the dramatic events of 63 B.C., when a disgruntled and impoverished nobleman, L. Sergius Catilina, turned to armed revolution after two electoral defeats. Among his followers were a group of heavily indebted young aristocrats, the Roman poor, and a military force in the north of Italy. With his trademark archaizing style, Sallust skillfully captures the drama of the times, including an early morning attempt to assassinate the consul Cicero and two emotionally charged speeches, by Julius Caesar and Cato the Younger, in a senatorial debate over the fate of the arrested conspirators. Sallust wrote while the Roman Republic was being transformed into an empire during the turbulent first century B.C. The Bellum Catilinae is well-suited for second-year or advanced Latin study and provides a fitting introduction to the richness of Latin literature, while also pointing the way to a critical investigation of late-Republican government and historiography. Ramsey's introduction and commentary bring the text to life for Latin students. This new edition (updated since the 2007 printing) includes two maps and two city plans, an updated and now annotated bibliography, a list of divergences from the 1991 Oxford Classical Text of Sallust, and revisions in the introduction and commentary.

Download or read book Latin Historians written by Christina Shuttleworth Kraus and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-07-03 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The histories of Rome by Sallust, Livy, Tacitus and others shared the desire to demonstrate their practical applications and attempted to define the significance of the empire. Politics and military activity were the central subjects of these histories. Roman historians' claims to telling the truth probably meant they were denying bias rather than conforming to the modern tendency to be objective.

  • Author : Timothy Peter Wiseman
  • Publisher : Presses Université Laval
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9781904675006
  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book Clio s Cosmetics written by Timothy Peter Wiseman and published by Presses Université Laval. This book was released on 2003 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clio is Muse of history, her 'cosmetics' the adornments of rhetoric. Peter Wiseman's influential book, first published in 1979 and now for the first time in paperback, concerns the writing of history during the first century BCE, when Rome was in process of becoming the centre of the Greek, as much as her own, literary world. Historians, trained in the schools of rhetoric, prized elegant plausibility above the empirical objectivity we expect of them today. Legend and history intermingled; history and poetry overlapped. This study divides into three distinct parts. The first treats the problems that arise from reading first century history as if it were written by modern, non-rhetorical standards. The second examines the pseudo-history of the gens Claudia, fabricated during the first century and transmitted to us by Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus. The third discusses Catullus' dedication of his poetry to the historian Cornelius Nepos against the background of the two authors' common intellectual heritage. The book represents a significant contribution towards an appreciation of ancient historiography and Roman culture. History is viewed here as rhetoric, as myth-making, and as poetry.

Book excerpt: King Manuel of Portugal chose Vasco da Gama to open up the sea route to the east to India just as Columbus had opened up the sea route to the west a few years earlier. In 1497 Vasco da Gama set off for India with a fleet of ships including the São Gabriel, the São Rafael, and the Bérrio, on what was to become one of the most important voyages of all time. Vasco da Gama's momentous voyage continued despite treachery, mutiny, warfare and scurvy, which resulted in the considerable loss of lives. Vasco da Gama certainly possessed the courage, ambition, pride and an unwavering steadfastness of purpose necessary for such a voyage. He was not averse to barbarity in the treatment of his enemies. He ordered the upper and lower lips of one of his enemies to be cut off, so that all his teeth showed, and then replaced his enemies ears with those of a dog. On another occasion a large number of his prisoners were hung to the yards of the ships and, after taking them down, he had their hands, feet and heads cut off filling up one of his enemies ships with them.Vasco da Gama's voyage was to irreversibly changed the course of human history and establish Vasco da Gama's place in history for ever more.Included in its entirety is the Roteiro, which is the only first hand account of the first voyage of Vasco da Gama, and further descriptions written by Gaspar Corrêa, King Manuel, Girolamo Sernigi, and three Portuguese accounts, as well as the original descriptions of Vasco da Gama's second and third voyages.

Download or read book Brouwer meets Husserl written by Mark van Atten and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-11-08 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a line be analysed mathematically such a way that it does not fall apart into a set of discrete points? Are there objects of pure mathematics that can change through time? L. E. J. Brouwer argued that the two questions are related and that the answer to both is "yes", introducing the concept of choice sequences. This book subjects Brouwer's choice sequences to a phenomenological critique in the style of Husserl.

Book Jesus and Moses Are Buried in India Birthplace of Abraham and the Hebrews

Download or read book Jesus and Moses Are Buried in India Birthplace of Abraham and the Hebrews written by Gene D. Matlock and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-11 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus and Moses are Buried in India, Birthplace of Abraham and the Hebrews! is a new kind of biblical history that brings out facts, not myths and guessing games. Unlike priests and preachers, who exhort their followers to swallow lies and spiritual ordure, I don't want my readers to swallow what I say naively. They should check all my references for themselves. This book follows the ancestors of the Hebrews from Eastern Siberia down to what is now the Indian subcontinenet; later, to what is now Israel. You'll be surprised to find out who and what Jehovah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Jesus really were. The book also blasts dangerous myths, such as the Christian fundamentalists' assertion that "God" wants nearly all Jews to die in a "Battle of Armageddon." That war happened in India, thousands of years ago. We're now in Millennium 2000. It's time for mankind to let truth take over his existence.
