Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Art of Reading is a collection of lectures delivered by Arthur Quiller-Couch, a literary critic and professor at Cambridge, between 1916 and 1918. In these lectures, Quiller-Couch argues for the study of the masterpieces of English literature—Shakespeare, Milton, and so on. He opines that the most effective way of appreciating literature is to experience it as “What Is,” which is to say feeling as if one has become part of the story. Much of the lectures is devoted to studying ways in which teachers can engender that feeling in pupils—with Quiller-Couch going so far as to say that even small children can be taught to appreciate seemingly-complex literature like The Tempest or classical poetry like Homer. Quiller-Couch also spends time discussing his then-controversial opinion that the English translation of the Bible, as well as many Greek classics, are masterpieces of English literature that deserve careful study not just for their religions or philosophical importance, but for their beautiful prose style. These lectures form a companion to his earlier collection of lectures, On the Art of Writing, which explore similar themes of the place of writing and literature in the intellectual firmament. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: The great French playwright Jean Anouilh (1910-87) wrote both "pink" bittersweet comedies and "black" tragic dramas. Jean Anouilh Five Plays—the finest English-language anthology of his works—crackles with both his sharp wit and his icy cynicism. In Antigone, his preeminent play and exemplar of his themes and style, he creates a disturbing world in which fate may be no more than a game of role-playing. Eurydice, The Ermine, The Rehearsal, Romeo and Jeannette are the other plays included in this edition.

Book excerpt: Two brothers lie dead at the gates of the ancient city of Thebes, each killed by the other in the final battle of a bloody civil war. King Creon decrees that one brother, Eteocles, defender of Thebes, is to be given a hero's burial. The other brother, Polyneices, leader of the rebel forces, is to be left unburied where he fell outside the city gates. Anyone who violates Creon's decree will be stoned to death. Antigone, sister of the fallen brothers, believes that Creon's decree is a dishonor to Polyneices and his family and an offense to the gods. Antigone decides to defy Creon's decree and bury Polyneices, no matter the consequences. This one act, modern language version of Sophocles' timeless drama is adapted specifically for middle school and high school students. It offers strong, challenging roles for young actors, and the modern language of the play makes it highly accessible and engaging for actors and audience alike. This adaptation retains the original characters and overall plot of the play, and conveys the sense of ancient Greek philosophy, myths, and legends on which the play is based. The play explores themes of family, loyalty, duty, conscience, and the conflict between the power of the state and the power of the human spirit which are still relevant today.

Book excerpt: King Oedipus/Oedipus at Colonus/Antigone Three towering works of Greek tragedy depicting the inexorable downfall of a doomed royal dynasty The legends surrounding the house of Thebes inspired Sophocles to create this powerful trilogy about humanity's struggle against fate. King Oedipus is the devastating portrayal of a ruler who brings pestilence to Thebes for crimes he does not realize he has committed and then inflicts a brutal punishment upon himself. Oedipus at Colonus provides a fitting conclusion to the life of the aged and blinded king, while Antigone depicts the fall of the next generation, through the conflict between a young woman ruled by her conscience and a king too confident of his own authority. Translated with an Introduction by E. F. WATLING

  • Pages : 152 pages

Book excerpt: The gods never move faster than when punishing men with the consequences of their own actions. Desperate to gain control over a city ravaged by civil war, Creon refuses to bury the body of Antigone's rebellious brother. Outraged, she defies his edict. Creon condemns the young woman, his niece, to be buried alive. The people daren't object but the prophet Teiresias warns that this tyranny will anger the gods: the rotting corpse is polluting the city. Creon hesitates and his fate is sealed. Sophocles' great tragic play dramatises the clash between the family and the city and, with high poetry and deep tragedy, presents an irreconcilable but equally balanced conflict. Sophoclean heroine Antigone has become a cultural archetype, the symbol of personal integrity and an icon of political freedom, whilst her coprotagonist Creon can be interpreted as either a civic saviour or a ruthless tyrant. This translation by Don Taylor, accurate yet poetic, was made for a BBC TV production of the Theban Plays in 1986, which he directed.
