Book excerpt: In their very first lecture biochemists learn that biomolecules, namely nucleic acids, proteins and lipids, are extremely temperature sensitive and will denature and lose their function easily. Then how do Archaebacteria survive in hot springs or Antarctic fishes which live in ice-cold water? The way nature engineered subcellular structures, lipid membranes or proteins to meet the biochemical requirements of extreme conditions - like extreme temperature or salt concentrations - is described in Life Under Extreme Conditions.

Book Biochemistry and Function of Antifreeze Proteins

Download or read book Biochemistry and Function of Antifreeze Proteins written by Steffen P. Graether and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antifreeze proteins, also known as thermal hysteresis proteins, ice binding proteins and ice structuring proteins, prevent the growth of ice crystals in several cold blooded organisms. First discovered in fish, they have also been found in insects, plants, fungi and bacteria. Antifreeze proteins cause the non-colligative depression of the freezing point of water, a property which has been exploited in the practical applications of antifreeze proteins such as improving the texture of ice cream, and could be used to extend the crop growing season or allow fish to thrive in cold waters. This book provides clear information on what is known about antifreeze proteins today and how to study them.

Book Marine Proteins and Peptides

Download or read book Marine Proteins and Peptides written by Se-Kwon Kim and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-18 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food proteins and bioactive peptides play a vital role in thegrowth and development of the body’s structural integrity andregulation, as well as having a variety of other functionalproperties. Land animal-derived food proteins such as collagen andgelatine carry risks of contamination (such as BSE). Marine-derivedproteins, which can provide equivalents to collagen and gelatinwithout the associated risks, are becoming more popular amongconsumers because of their numerous health beneficial effects. Mostmarine-derived bioactive peptides are currently underutilized. While fish and shellfish are perhaps the most obvious sources ofsuch proteins and peptides, there is also the potential for furtherdevelopment of proteins and peptides from sources like algae, seacucumber and molluscs. Marine-derived proteins and peptides alsohave potential uses in novel products, with the possibility of widecommercialization in the food, beverage, pharmaceutical andcosmetic industries, as well as in other fields such asphotography, textiles, leather, electronics, medicine andbiotechnology. Marine Proteins and Peptides: Biological Activities andApplications presents an overview of the current status, future industrial perspectives and commercial trends of bioactivemarine-derived proteins and peptides. Many of the industrialperspectives are drawn from the food industry, but the book alsorefers to the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. There haverecently been significant advances in isolating functionalingredients from marine bio-resources and seafood by-products foruse in these industries, but little has been published, creating aknowledge gap, particularly with regard to the isolation andpurification processes. This book is the first to fill thatgap. Marine Proteins and Peptides: Biological Activities andApplications is a valuable resource for researchers inmarine biochemistry field as well as food industry managersinterested in exploring novel techniques and knowledge onalternative food protein sources. It will become a standardreference book for researchers involved in developing marinebio-resources and seafood by-products for novel nutraceutical, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical applications. It will also appeal tomanagers and product developers in the food, pharmaceutical andcosmetics industries, particularly those looking to usemarine-derived proteins and peptides as substitutes or replacementsfor unfashionable or outdated food components.

Book Ice Adhesion

Download or read book Ice Adhesion written by K. L. Mittal and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book presents ways to mitigate the disastrous effects of snow/ice accumulation and discusses the mechanisms of new coatings deicing technologies. The strategies currently used to combat ice accumulation problems involve chemical, mechanical or electrical approaches. These are expensive and labor intensive, and the use of chemicals raises serious environmental concerns. The availability of truly icephobic surfaces or coatings will be a big boon in preventing the devastating effects of ice accumulation. Currently, there is tremendous interest in harnessing nanotechnology in rendering surfaces icephobic or in devising icephobic surface materials and coatings, and all signals indicate that such interest will continue unabated in the future. As the key issue regarding icephobic materials or coatings is their durability, much effort is being spent in developing surface materials or coatings which can be effective over a long period. With the tremendous activity in this arena, there is strong hope that in the not too distant future, durable surface materials or coatings will come to fruition. This book contains 20 chapters by subject matter experts and is divided into three parts— Part 1: Fundamentals of Ice Formation and Characterization; Part 2: Ice Adhesion and Its Measurement; and Part 3: Methods to Mitigate Ice Adhesion. The topics covered include: factors influencing the formation, adhesion and friction of ice; ice nucleation on solid surfaces; physics of ice nucleation and growth on a surface; condensation frosting; defrosting properties of structured surfaces; relationship between surface free energy and ice adhesion to surfaces; metrology of ice adhesion; test methods for quantifying ice adhesion strength to surfaces; interlaboratory studies of ice adhesion strength; mechanisms of surface icing and deicing technologies; icephobicities of superhydrophobic surfaces; anti-icing using microstructured surfaces; icephobic surfaces: features and challenges; bio-inspired anti-icing surface materials; durability of anti-icing coatings; durability of icephobic coatings; bio-inspired icephobic coatings; protection from ice accretion on aircraft; and numerical modeling and its application to inflight icing.

Book Ways of Nature

Download or read book Ways of Nature written by Pany Decossard and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2023-12-13 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ways of Nature, Dr. Décossard articulates the first theory of evolution since Darwin. By his own account, he stumbled upon his proposed mechanism of eukaryogenesis using a process worthy of the three princes of Serendip. From there, he succeeded in establishing a comprehensive theory of life and the universe. For instance, we learn that a new paradigm, called “ the seeds-first theory,” explains biodiversity among eukaryotic species, such as those of plants and animals. It is interesting to discover what contributions, if any, the theory of natural selection provided to the new model. Nevertheless, the modern version of Darwinism, or neo-Darwinism, has long been engaged in a major antagonism with the theory of Intelligent Design (ID), which holds that the living world emanated from the conscious choice of a designer rather than chance events. In any case, the author will be the first one to admit that the new model of evolution delineated in this opus is not born out of the crisis that is currently rocking neo-Darwinism, a crisis sparked by the assaults of many thinkers and scientists, including those of the ID movement. He is also quick to reveal how little he knew about the standoff between the two main protagonists in the crisis of the theory of natural selection before he began work on this book, cloistered as he was both literally and figuratively within the confines of emergency rooms caring for the sick and injured. In Ways of Nature, Dr. Décossard explores the paths taken by life since its apparition and shines a bright spotlight on its destiny and the fate of the universe. In so doing, he also identifies the connections between the living and the nonliving and opens our eyes to novel ideas about physical phenomena whose conventional descriptions we thought were settled. Ways of Nature is undoubtedly a landmark publication. It is indeed a paradigm shift à la Kuhn in our understanding of life and its evolution.

  • Author : Richard Lee
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

  • ISBN : 147570190X

Download or read book Insects at Low Temperature written by Richard Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of insects at low temperature is a comparatively new field. Only recently has insect cryobiology begun to mature, as research moves from a descriptive approach to a search for underlying mechanisms at diverse levels of organization ranging from the gene and cell to ecological and evolutionary relationships. Knowledge of insect responses to low temperature is crucial for understanding the biology of insects living in seasonally varying habitats as well as in polar regions. It is not possible to precisely define low temperature. In the tropics exposure to 10-15°C may induce chill coma or death, whereas some insects in temperate and polar regions remain active and indeed even able to fly at O°C or below. In contrast, for persons interested in cryopreservation, low temperature may mean storage in liquid nitrogen at - 196°C. In the last decade, interest in adaptations of invertebrates to low temperature has risen steadily. In part, this book had its origins in a symposium on this subject that was held at the annual meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Louisville, Kentucky, USA in December, 1988. However, the emergence and growth of this area has also been strongly influenced by an informal group of investigators who met in a series of symposia held in Oslo, Norway in 1982, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in 1985 and in Cambridge, England in 1988. Another is scheduled for Binghamton, New York, USA (1990).
