Drawing on the author’s interviews with community health workers, as well as observations of their daily interactions with patients and supervisors, this volume considers what motivates them to improve the quality of life and death of the most marginalized people. The Lives of Community Health Workers also illuminates how their contributions at a micro level are intricately linked to policymaking and practice at higher levels in the field of global health. It shows us that many of the challenges that community health workers face in their daily lives are embedded in larger social, economic, and political contexts, and it raises a resounding call for further research into their labour and health systems they inhabit.

After the 1880s, Abyssinia, under Menilek II, expanded its ancient heartland to incorporate vast new territories to the south. Here, for the first time, these regions are treated as an integral part of the empire. The book opens with an interpretation of nineteenth-century Abyssinia as an African political economy, rather than as a variant on European feudalism, and with an account of the north's impact on peoples of the new south. Case studies from the southern regions follow four by historians and four by anthropologists, each examining aspects of the relationship between imperial rule and local society. However, such norms are far from the lived reality of these children. Church is not pro-nature. The Church itself has set up a partition into sacred and profane, with different rule for both spheres; both systems of rules exist parallel. The followers respect the plants and animals in the church compound as end by themselves than a means to their economic objectives; they respect them not for their economic value rather for their perceived duty; respect to God as Church is the house of God. The people do not consider the plants and animals in the Church as simply normal animals rather they are believed to have a metaphysical divine power. Hence, it is impossible to put the follower's ethical perspective in exclusive manner rather it is both anthropocentristic and deep ecological which can be determined by the nature of the space occupied by the recourses.

Following his research, Jensen wrote the present work, which he did not publish. The book follows on from his book In the Land of Gada, published in 1936, which was based on his research in 1934/35 in the same region. It is a classic ethnography divided into the following chapters: The country and its people, social life, offices, clans and caste system, religious and spiritual life, and oral traditions. The ethnography is illustrated by historical photographs from the archives of the Frobenius Institute. Adolf Ellegard Jensen (1899 - 1965) was director of the Anthropological Museum in Frankfurt and hold a full professorship at the Institute for Social Anthropology at Goethe University Frankfurt and the directorship of the Frobenius Institute (1946 - 65).
