Book excerpt: "The decision to build the James Bay Hydro-electric Project was announced in April, 1971, by Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa. Negotiations with the Inuit and Cree bands in the area resulted in the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement in 1975, the first aboriginal rights contract between any level of government and representatives of an aboriginal people. Works by anthropologists, writers, government departments, and native people have added immeasurably to our understanding of this important aspect of Canadian history, and this research guide is meant to provide scholars and the general public with a thematic overview of the literature"--Introduction, p. 4.

Book Historicizing Canadian Anthropology

Download or read book Historicizing Canadian Anthropology written by Julia Harrison and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historicizing Canadian Anthropology is the first significant examination of the historical development of anthropological study in this country. It addresses key issues in the evolution of the discipline: the shaping influence of Aboriginal-anthropological encounters; the challenge of compiling a history for the Canadian context; and the place of international and institutional relations. The contributors to this collection reflect on the definition and scope of the discipline and explore the degree to which a uniquely Canadian tradition affects anthropological theory, practice, and reflexivity.

Book White Man s Gonna Getcha

Download or read book White Man s Gonna Getcha written by Toby Morantz and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2002-06-14 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morantz shows that with the imposition of administration from the south the Crees had to confront a new set of foreigners whose ideas and plans were very different from those of the fur traders. In the 1930s and 1940s government intervention helped overcome the disastrous disappearance of the beaver through the creation of government-decreed preserves and a ban on beaver hunting, but beginning in the 1950s a revolving array of socio-economic programs instituted by the government brought the adverse effects of what Morantz calls bureaucratic colonialism. Drawing heavily on oral testimonies recorded by anthropologists in addition to eye-witness and archival sources, Morantz incorporates the Crees' own views, interests, and responses. She shows how their strong ties to the land and their appreciation of the wisdom of their way of life, coupled with the ineptness and excessive frugality of the Canadian bureaucracy, allowed them to escape the worst effects of colonialism. Despite becoming increasingly politically and economically dominated by Canadian society, the Crees succeeded in staving off cultural subjugation. They were able to face the massive hydroelectric development of the 1970s with their language, practices, and values intact and succeeded in negotiating a modern treaty. This detailed portrait of twentieth-century Canadian colonialism will be of interest to native studies specialists, anthropologists, and political scientists generally.

Book Ethnography and Development

Download or read book Ethnography and Development written by Marilyn Silverman and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2004-11-04 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Salisbury (1926-1989) was a pioneer in development anthropology and one of the founders of McGill University's anthropology department. His work had immense influence in the areas of economic anthropology, ethnographic practice (New Guinea, northern Canada) and policy formation. This volume commemorates and explores his life and work. Ethnography and Development presents eighteen articles written by Salisbury between 1954 and 1988, framed by seven original essays that explore his basic ideas as well as the intellectual and personal contexts in which he worked. The articles and essays highlight many of the issues that informed those of his generation who worked in economic and political anthropology, the anthropology of development, public anthropology, advocacy and applied anthropology, and in developing the organisational vehicles on which the profession currently depends. Salisbury's broad socio-economic vision, conceptual ideas, and socio-cultural ethnographic theories continue to exert a powerful influence on the discipline. Contributors include Harvey A. Feit (McMaster University), Henry J. Rutz (Hamilton College), and Colin H. Scott (McGill University).
