Iconographic and graphic study of such corpus of glyphs evinced two distinguished sets of pictographs which could be named BASIC and COMPLEX. BASIC PICTOGRAPHS are those glyphs made by one and just one iconographic unit (signifier) that conveys its meaning through its pictorial resemblance to the physical object meant. BASIC PICTOGRAPHS are assembled together making COMPLEX PICTOGRAPHS, alias COMPLEX UNITS OF SIGNIFIERS. As any BASIC PICTOGRAPH consists in a signifier written by a minimal graphic unit, identification of BASIC PICTOGRAPHS categories to gather them coincides with the study and identification of a set of ICONOGRAPHIC PRIMES into Dongba pictographs corpus. ICONOGRAPHIC PRIME is then used in the making of iconographic index plates for BASIC PICTOGRAPHS.

Faubion joins in several exchanges to facilitate and elaborate the dialogue, and Tobias Rees moderates the discussions and contributes an introduction and an afterword to the volume. Most of the conversations are focused on contemporary challenges to how anthropology understands its subject and how ethnographic research projects are designed and carried out. Rabinow and Marcus reflect on what remains distinctly anthropological about the study of contemporary events and processes, and they contemplate productive new directions for the field. The two converge in Marcus’s emphasis on the need to redesign pedagogical practices for training anthropological researchers and in Rabinow’s proposal of collaborative initiatives in which ethnographic research designs could be analyzed, experimented with, and transformed. Book excerpt: It is widely assumed that the "nonclassical" nature of the Russian empire and its equally "nonclassical" modernity made Russian intellectuals immune to the racial obsessions of Western Europe and the United States. Homo Imperii corrects this perception by offering the first scholarly history of racial science in prerevolutionary Russia and the early Soviet Union. Marina Mogilner places this story in the context of imperial self-modernization, political and cultural debates of the epoch, different reformist and revolutionary trends, and the growing challenge of modern nationalism. By focusing on the competing centers of race science in different cities and regions of the empire, Homo Imperii introduces to English-language scholars the institutional nexus of racial science in Russia that exhibits the influence of imperial strategic relativism. Reminiscent of the work of anthropologists of empire such as Ann Stoler and Benedict Anderson, Homo Imperii reveals the complex imperial dynamics of Russian physical anthropology and contributes an important comparative perspective from which to understand the emergence of racial science in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Europe and America.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anthropological Review, Vol. 4 It was likewise alleged that to substantiate the doctrine of genealogical derivation would require the discovery of counterpart races in those districts of Europe from which England was colonised. As there would still appear to be a great indisposition to believe that distinct, hereditary, and long-persistent races or types can be traced in different districts of England, it may be necessary, before proceeding to a statement of facts, to make a few general observations. Alleged Disappearance of Types by Crossing. - It is not to be wondered at that those who have had few opportunities of making particular and repeated observations in different parts of England, should doubt the possibility of types of mankind being perpetuated, more especially as we are continually reminded by the newspaper press of migrations taking place from one town or province to another. Previously to travelling, or as long as we are contented with being library anthropologists, we are likely to be left in ignorance of the extent to which the masses of the English population still cling to their native districts. Internal migration in England is generally limited to the middle or more affluent classes. The great bulk of the people very seldom shift their localities, except in manufacturing districts, and even then it could be shown that at least three-fourths of the inhabitants of a manufacturing town, such as Sheffield, have either been born in the town or have come from the neighbourhood. Railways in many respects have favoured migration, but it could be shown that in quite as many cases they have rendered a change of residence unnecessary. But the fact that different dialects still linger in different parts of England is a sufficient proof that the interblending of races has not proceeded to an extent capable of destroying typical distinctions, or rendering the classification of the inhabitants impossible. The uneducated natives of one anthropological area are still nearly unintelligible to those of another area. In one area at least nineteen-twentieths of the people still say we for us, her for she, I for me, and vice versa.
