Book Anthracycline Antibiotics in Cancer Therapy

Download or read book Anthracycline Antibiotics in Cancer Therapy written by Franco M. Muggia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: F. M. MUGGIA When faced with the inadequacies of current cancer treatment, we prefer to look at what the future may hold. Quite often, we take for granted the past, preferring research into totally new areas. However, the persistent development of fertile soil may yield surprising rewards for those who choose to build on the knowledge of the past--hence, this symposium on anthracycline antibiotics. Although the anthracycline antibiotics represent much of the present and future of cancer treatment, their actual use c stretches back barely two decades to the pioneering efforts of Aurelio Di Marco, who characterized the antitumor properties of daunomycin and adriamycin. * The clinical application of these two compounds heralded a decade of excitement among oncologists dealing with pediatric tumors, breast cancer, leukemias, and lymphomas, and opened new hope for patients afflicted with sar comas and a variety of other tumors that had been deemed - sistant to chemotherapy. These successes were tempered with the realization that the antitumor effect of anthracyclines could be achieved at times only at the very high price of risking cardiac decompensation and, almost invariably, with the occurrence of alopecia and other acute toxicities. This record of past achievements and problems has slowly given way to a present increasingly illuminated by our ability to modify the distressing toxicities of these agents. Detailed clinical studies supplemented by ingenious laboratory models have gradually elucidated mechanisms and risk factors im plicated in the cardiomyopathy.

Book excerpt: Developed from a symposium at the 205th National Meeting of the ACS in Denver, March 1993, held to bring together researchers who are involved in the direct design and synthesis of new drugs with researchers who are investigating biochemical processes and mechanisms of action. The volume covers research relevant to the development of novel anthracyclines, such as the synthesis of promising new analogs, studies of mechanisms of action, and new approaches to improving properties for this class of compounds by using different drug- delivery and tumor-targeting systems. Book Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs

Download or read book Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs written by Carmen Avendaño and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs, Second Edition, provides an updated treatment from the point of view of medicinal chemistry and drug design, focusing on the mechanism of action of antitumor drugs from the molecular level, and on the relationship between chemical structure and chemical and biochemical reactivity of antitumor agents. Antitumor chemotherapy is a very active field of research, and a huge amount of information on the topic is generated every year. Cytotoxic chemotherapy is gradually being supplemented by a new generation of drugs that recognize specific targets on the surface or inside cancer cells, and resistance to antitumor drugs continues to be investigated. While these therapies are in their infancy, they hold promise of more effective therapies with fewer side effects. Although many books are available that deal with clinical aspects of cancer chemotherapy, this book provides a sorely needed update from the point of view of medicinal chemistry and drug design. Presents information in a clear and concise way using a large number of figures Historical background provides insights on how the process of drug discovery in the anticancer field has evolved Extensive references to primary literature

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific collaboration between the United States and Japan in the field of cancer goes back many years. In this successful international collaboration cancer chemotherapy has been one of the most productive areas. Pioneers such as YOSHIDA, UMEZAWA, SHEAR, and GOLDIN established firm links of mutual trust and respect in the period after the Second Great War. Japanese drugs, such as mitomycin C and bleomycin have become mainstays of clinical oncology in the U. S. and throughout the world. Many drugs developed in the U. S. have become established in Japanese cancer therapy. Within the cancer chemotherapy field the antitumor antibiotics rank as one of the most important groups. In the U . S. -J apanese collaboration this group of drugs has taken the paramount role. The Japanese, under the leadership of U mezawa, are considered to be among the most innovative and productive in this area which has also had great emphasis in the United States as part of the National Cancer Institute's drug development program and in the pharmaceutical industry. This extended collaboration in general oncology, and chemotherapy in particular, has received increased impetus by and support from the official U . S. -J apan Joint Agreement on cancer research, which was established in 1974 between the National Cancer Institute and the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science. One of the subsections of this agreement is cancer therapy with emphasis on chemotherapy.

Current advances in hyperthermia in cancer treatment, hematologic and nutritional support, bone marrow transplantation, pain management and care of the terminally ill patients with cancer are also presented. In summary, this book provides a comprehensive coverage of the current knowledge on the most innovative, systematic and multidisciplinary approaches to the treatment of patients with cancer.

Book Medical Applications of Liposomes

Download or read book Medical Applications of Liposomes written by D.D. Lasic and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-07-22 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of liposomes as a drug delivery system has fluctuated since its introduction in the late 1960's by A.D. Bangham. While academic research of liposomes as a model membrane system has always flourished, as the exponential growth of papers can testify, the application of these findings to medically useful products has gone through several crises. Following the original optimism in the 70's and early 80's, a period of severe skepticism ensued at the end of the 80's and beginning of the 90's, culminating in a moderate but real optimism in the mid 90's, as a result of a successful launch of the first products in the US and Europe. In this collection of papers, the editors have gathered the most promising ideas, approaches, applications and commercial developments, thereby presenting an up-to-date compilation of the present status of the field. This includes such broad areas as anti-cancer chemotherapy immune stimulation and infectious diseases. Currently, the major areas of progress are in delivery of anti-fungal agents by conventional liposomes or lipid-based carriers and systemic anticancer therapy using long-circulating liposomes. The future applications as characterized by the direction of present day research is in specific targeting and delivery of informational molecules such as DNA plasmids (genes), antisense oligonucleotides or ribozymes. Other future developments may be in topical delivery, vaccination and in diagnostics. Features of this book: . Contributions from almost all the leading labs in the field . Up-to-date, critical reviews bridged by editors' introductions . Organized into a logical framework.
