Book An Anthology of the Poetry of the Age of Shakespeare Chosen and Arranged Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Anthology of the Poetry of the Age of Shakespeare Chosen and Arranged Classic Reprint written by William Thomas Young and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Anthology of the Poetry of the Age of Shakespeare, Chosen and Arranged The Cambridge Anthologies are intended for the general reader, who, whilst he is familiar with the greater masters, has little leisure, and, it may be, little inclination, to become a professed student of literature. They seek to provide such a reader with first-hand knowledge of the literary atmosphere and social conditions in which these masterpieces were created. At present, this need is satisfied only by reference to histories of literature, which have too many pre-occupations to deal justly with it, or to authorities even less accessible. It is the object of this series to let each age speak for itself, and to give coherence and prominence to what seem to be its significant features. Thus, the thought, temper, manners and activities of the period of Shakespeare, which is the theme of the first two volumes, are exemplified in selections from contemporary poetry and prose. The former illustrates the literary interests, models and aspirations, as well as the lyrical and rhetorical quality of the time; the latter gives a picture of the Elizabethan Englishman, painted by himself, in pursuit of his business, sport or roguery. Volumes dealing in like manner with other periods will follow, and the series will include a history of English literature for general readers. Download or read book Elizabethan Poetry written by Bob Blaisdell and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2005-01-17 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relative peace and prosperity of the Elizabethan age (1558–1603) fostered the growth of one of the most fruitful eras in literary history. Lyric poetry, prose, and drama flourished in sixteenth-century England in works that blended medieval traditions with Renaissance optimism. This anthology celebrates the wit and imaginative creativity of the Elizabethan poets with a generous selection of their graceful and sophisticated verse. Highlights include sonnets from Astrophel and Stella, written by Sir Philip Sidney — a scholar, poet, critic, courtier, diplomat, soldier, and ideal English Renaissance man; poems by Edmund Spenser, whose works combined romance with allegory, adventure, and morality; and sonnets by William Shakespeare, whose towering poetic genius transcends the ages. Other celebrated contributors include John Donne ("Go, and catch a fallen star"), Ben Jonson ("Drink to me only with thine eyes"), and Christopher Marlowe ("The Passionate Shepherd to His Love"). The poetry of lesser-known figures such as Michael Drayton, Samuel Daniel, and Fulke Greville appears here, along with verses by individuals better known in other fields — Francis Bacon, Queen Elizabeth I, and Walter Raleigh — whose poems offer valuable insights into the spirit of the age.

Book An Oxford Anthology of Shakespeare

Download or read book An Oxford Anthology of Shakespeare written by William Shakespeare and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1989 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This elegantly-crafted anthology presents over two hundred of the finest examples of Shakespeare's work, ranging from two-line aphorisms to sonnets and even complete scenes. Ideal for browsing, it allows readers to revisit favorite passages such as Hamlet's soliloquy or the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet, or to discover unfamiliar gems. Above all, it permits readers to savor Shakespeare's unequaled capacity to portray the peaks and valleys of human experience. In creating the anthology, Stanley Wells--the General Editor of the Oxford Shakespeare--has selected those passages which he finds most attractive in their own right and which suffer least from being read out of context. Arranged according to subject matter, this volume, which is based on the text of the Complete Oxford Shakespeare, also contains a play-by-play index and glossary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from At Shakespeare's Shrine: A Poetical Anthology This is not the first attempt to publish a poetical anthology of those who have paid tribute at Shake speare's Shrine. It is however, though far from complete, the most exhaustive work of its kind yet produced. And an effort has been made to give as representative a selection of poetic tributes from all ages down to the present, as the limits of the volume will permit. Though the information may surprise my readers it would be a comparatively easy task to compile a dozen similar volumes, and then only have touched the fringe of the mantle which clothes the memory of the greatest poet the world has ever known - the divine, the gentle, the immortal Shakespeare. Many of the verses in this volume have been specially composed for insertion herein, others have 'been sent in response to my request for Poems on Shakespeare' in that incomparable and eagerly-welcomed weekly, Notes and Queries, to the editor of which my cordial thanks are due. From the British Museum and the Shakespeare Memorial Library at Stratford on-avon, rare old broadsides and ballads have been unearthed and reprinted in the following pages, and for the kindly and generous assistance rendered to me by Mr. W. Salt Brassington, p.s.a. The Librarian of the latter mentioned place I acknowledge my great indebtedness.
