Download or read book The Music of Herbert Howells written by Phillip A. Cooke and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2013 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbert Howells (1892-1983) was a prodigiously gifted musician and the favourite student of the notoriously hard-to-please Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. Throughout his long life, he was one of the country's most prominent composers, writing extensively in all genres except the symphony and opera. Yet today he is known mostly for his church music, and there is as yet relatively little serious study of his work. This book is the first large-scale study of Howells's music, affording both detailed consideration of individual works and a broad survey of general characteristics and issues. Its coverage is wide-ranging, addressing all aspects of the composer's prolific output and probing many of the issues that it raises. The essays are gathered in five sections: Howells the Stylist examines one of the most striking aspect of the composer's music, its strongly characterised personal voice; Howells the Vocal Composer addresses both his well-known contribution to church music and his less familiar, but also important, contribution to the genre of solo song; Howells the Instrumental Composer shows that he was no less accomplished for his work in genres without words, for which, in fact, he first made his name; Howells the Modern considers the composer's rather overlooked contribution to the development of a modern voice for British music; and Howells in Mourning explores the important impact of his son's death on his life and work. The composer that emerges from these studies is a complex figure: technically fluent but prone to revision and self-doubt; innovative but also conservative; a composer with an improvisational sense of flow who had a firm grasp of musical form; an exponent of British musical style who owed as much to continental influence as to his national heritage. This volume, comprising a collection of outstanding essays by established writers and emergent scholars, opens up the range of Howells's achievement to a wider audience, both professional and amateur. PHILLIP COOKE is Lecturer in Composition at the University of Aberdeen. DAVID MAW is Tutor and Research Fellow in Music at Oriel College, Oxford, holding Lectureships also at Christ Church, The Queen's and Trinity Colleges. Download or read book Dies Irae written by Robert Chase and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2004-09-08 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since time immemorial, the response of the living to death has been to commemorate the life of the departed through ceremonies and rituals. For nearly two millennia, the Christian quest for eternal peace has been expressed in a poetic-musical structure known as the requiem. Traditional requiem texts, among them the anonymous medieval Latin poem Dies Irae ('Day of Wrath'), have inspired an untold number of composers in different ages and serving different religions, Western and Eastern. This book, the first comprehensive survey of requiem music for nearly half a century, provides a great deal of diverse and detailed information that will be of use to the professional musician, the musical scholar, the choral conductor, the theologian and liturgist, and the general reader. The main body of the guide is a description of some 250 requiems. Each entry includes a concise biography of the composer and a description of the composition. Details of voicing, orchestration, editions, and discography are given. An extensive bibliography includes dictionaries, encyclopedias, prayer books, monographs, and articles. An appendix lists more than 1700 requiems not discussed within the main text.
Download or read book Anthem for Doomed Youth written by Jon Stallworthy and published by Constable & Robinson. This book was released on 2002 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In time of war and national calamity, numbers of people seldom seen in church will suddenly turn to religion for consolation and inspiration - and perhaps more surprisingly, just as many turn to poetry. Never was the phenomenon more clearly marked than in that war we still know as The Great War. Hundreds of those now referred to as 'the war poets' saw their work in print between 1914 and 1918; others - including some of the best - were not published until afterwards. That rather unsatisfactory label includes very different kinds of writers - Owen and Sassoon, with their poems of passionate indignation, are a far cry from Edward Thomas's bleak and oblique rural ruminations. But 'true Poets', as Wilfred Owen wrote, 'must be truthful', and Jon Stallworthy has gathered here some of the most moving and unforgettable poetry born out of the horror of the trenches. He has written brief but telling accounts of the lives and work of twelve of the most powerful of those poets who experienced and wrote about the worst war the world has ever known. Featured are: Rupert Brooke; Julian Grenfell; Charles Hamilton Sorley; Francis Ledwidge; Siegfried Sassoon; Robert Graves; Wilfred Owen; Edmund Blunden; Edward Thomas; Ivor Gurney; Isaac Rosenberg; David Jones. Illustrated with haunting images, photos and paintings.
Download or read book Britten War Requiem written by Mervyn Cooke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-11-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely regarded as one of the greatest choral works of the twentieth century, Britten's War Requiem was first performed at the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral in 1962. It provocatively juxtaposes the vivid anti-war poetry of Wilfred Owen with the Latin Requiem Mass in a passionate outcry against man's inhumanity to man. This handbook explores the background to Britten's use of the Owen texts, charting the development of the composer's lifelong pacifist beliefs and (in a chapter contributed by Philip Reed of the Britten-Pears Library, Aldeburgh) detailing the process of composition from hitherto unpublished correspondence and manuscript sources. The musical structure is investigated, and the work's compositional idiom related to Britten's output as a whole. A concluding chapter surveys the fluctuating critical responses to the score, and includes discussion of the composer's legendary 1963 recording and Derek Jarman's controversial interpretation on film.
Download or read book Wilfred Owen s Anthem for Doomed Youth An Analysis written by Jenny Koss and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, Ruhr-University of Bochum, language: English, abstract: The poem “Anthem for Doomed Youth” consists of two stanzas and fourteen lines. The first stanza consists of eight lines and the second stanza consists of six lines, an octave and a sestet. It is a variation of the Shakespearian or Elizabethan sonnet. Owen himself has divided the sonnet in parts, the break coming at the end of line eight, which gives the impression of it being a Petrarchan sonnet. The reader must not, however, be fooled by this break, because if one looks at the poem in terms of its themes, one finds that there is only one theme which takes up all fourteen lines. On the other hand, although the sonnet concludes with a rhyming couplet, there is no distinct theme in this couplet, as there would be in a classical Elizabethan structure. This essay takes a closer look at the poem and analyses it in detail.

Download or read book The Power of Death written by Maria-José Blanco and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social and cultural changes of the last century have transformed death from an everyday fact to something hidden from view. Shifting between the practical and the theoretical, the professional and the intimate, the real and the fictitious, this collection of essays explores the continued power of death over our lives. It examines the idea and experience of death from an interdisciplinary perspective, including studies of changing burial customs throughout Europe; an account of a“dying party” in the Netherlands; examinations of the fascination with violent death in crime fiction and the phenomenon of serial killer art; analyses of death and bereavement in poetry, fiction, and autobiography; and a look at audience reactions to depictions of death on screen. By studying and considering how death is thought about in the contemporary era, we might restore the natural place it has in our lives.

Download or read book Poetry and Pedagogy across the Lifespan written by Sandra Lee Kleppe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores poetry and pedagogy in practice across the lifespan. Poetry is directly linked to improved literacy, creativity, personal development, emotional intelligence, complex analytical thinking and social interaction: all skills that are crucial in contemporary educational systems. However, a narrow focus on STEM subjects at the expense of the humanities has led educators to deprioritize poetry and to overlook its interdisciplinary, multi-modal potential. The editors and contributors argue that poetry is not a luxury, but a way to stimulate linguistic experiences that are formally rich and cognitively challenging. To learn through poetry is not just to access information differently, but also to forge new and different connections that can serve as reflective tools for lifelong learning. This interdisciplinary book will be of value to teachers and students of poetry, as well as scholars interested in literacy across the disciplines.

Download or read book Posthumous Lives written by Bette London and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Posthumous Lives explores the shifting significance of public and private efforts to commemorate British soldiers killed in World War I—as well as the less well-remembered casualties of the war, including Voluntary Aid Detachments, nurses, conscientious objectors, civilians, and soldiers executed for desertion or cowardice—and the compelling hold the First World War has had on the British imagination for more than a century. By using the concept of the posthumous life—the attempt to extend the presence of the dead into the lives of the living—Bette London demonstrates how this idea came to shape Britain's First World War memory practices and rituals. London draws on a diverse range of source materials—from sentimental memorabilia books commissioned by bereaved families and canonical works of literature and art by Virginia Woolf, Wilfred Owen, and Sir Edwin Lutyens to centenary memorials and commemorative art installations—to uncover the surprising connections between memorialization practices, war writing, and modernism. Spanning the century from the middle of World War I to its centenary celebrations, Posthumous Lives illuminates, in a deeply moving narrative, how the dead are remembered to meet the shifting needs of the living.
