Book Green Composites

Download or read book Green Composites written by Caroline Baillie and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-09-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an increasing movement of scientists and engineers who are dedicated to minimising the environmental impact of polymer composite production. Life cycle assessment is of paramount importance at every stage of a product’s life, from initial synthesis through to final disposal and a sustainable society needs environmentally safe materials and processing methods. With an internationally recognised team of contributors, Green Composites examines fibre reinforced polymer composite production and explains how environmental footprints can be diminished at every stage of the life cycle. The introductory chapters look at why we should consider green composites, their design and life cycle assessment. The properties of natural fibre sources such as cellulose and wood are then discussed. Chapter 6 examines recyclable synthetic fibre-thermoplastic composites as an alternative solution and polymers derived from natural sources are covered in Chapter 7. The factors that influence the properties of these natural composites and natural fibre thermoplastic composites are detailed in Chapters 8 and 9. The final four chapters consider clean processing, applications, recycling, degradation and reprocessing.Green composites is an essential guide for agricultural crop producers, government agricultural departments, automotive companies, composite producers and material scientists all dedicated to the promotion and practice of eco-friendly materials and production methods. Reviews fibre reinforced polymer composite production Explains how environmental footprints can be diminished at every stage of the life-cycle

Book Nondestructive Evaluation of Adhesive Bonds Using 20 MHz and 25 kHz Ultrasonic Frequencies on Metal and Polymer Assemblies

Download or read book Nondestructive Evaluation of Adhesive Bonds Using 20 MHz and 25 kHz Ultrasonic Frequencies on Metal and Polymer Assemblies written by Gilbert B. Chapman II and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demands for improvements in aerospace and automotive energy-efficiency, performance, corrosion resistance, body stiffness and style have increased the use of adhesive bonds to help meet those demands, by providing joining technology that accommodates a wider variety of materials and design options. However, the history of adhesive bond performance clearly indicates the need for a robust method of assuring the existence of the required consistent level of adhesive bond integrity in every bonded region. The Quality Assurance of Adhesive Bonds by Ultrasonic Nondestructive Testing technology put forth in this book meets that need by describing two new, complementary ultrasonic techniques for the evaluation of these bonds, and thus provide improvements over previous methods. The development of a 20 MHz pulse-echo method for nondestructive evaluation of adhesive bonds will accomplish the assessment of bond joints with adhesive as thin as 0.1 mm. This new method advances the state of the art by providing a high-resolution, phase-sensitive procedure that identifies the bond state at each interface of the adhesive with the substrate(s), by the acquisition and analysis of acoustic echoes reflected from interfaces between layers with large acoustic impedance mismatch. Because interface echo amplitudes are marginal when the acoustic impedance of the substrate is close to that of the adhesive, a 25 kHz Lamb wave technique was developed to be employed in such cases, albeit with reduced resolution. Modeling the ultrasonic echoes and Lamb-wave signals was accomplished using mathematical expressions developed from the physics of acoustic transmission, attenuation and reflection in layered media. The models were validated by experimental results from a variety of bond joint materials, geometries and conditions, thereby confirming the validity of the methodology used for extracting interpretations from the phase-sensitive indications, as well as identifying the range and limits of applications. Results from the application of both methodologies to laboratory specimens and to samples from production operations are reported herein, and show that bond-joint integrity can be evaluated effectively over the range of materials and geometries addressed.

Book Fatigue Life Prediction of Composites and Composite Structures

Download or read book Fatigue Life Prediction of Composites and Composite Structures written by Anastasios P. Vassilopoulos and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue Life Prediction of Composites and Composite Structures, Second Edition, is a comprehensive review of fatigue damage and fatigue life modeling and prediction methodologies for composites and their use in practice. In this new edition, existing chapters are fully updated, while new chapters are introduced to cover the most recent developments in the field. The use of composites is growing in structural applications in many industries, including aerospace, marine, wind turbine and civil engineering. However, there are uncertainties about their long-term performance, including performance issues relating to cyclic fatigue loading that hinder the adoption of a commonly accepted credible fatigue design methodology for the life prediction of composite engineering structures. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, this book is a standard reference for industry professionals and researchers alike. - Examines past, present and future trends associated with the fatigue life prediction of composite materials and structures - Assesses novel computational methods for fatigue life modeling and prediction of composite materials under constant amplitude loading - Covers a wide range of techniques for predicting fatigue, including their theoretical background and practical applications - Addresses new topics and covers contemporary research developments in the field

Book Particulate Fillers for Polymers

Download or read book Particulate Fillers for Polymers written by R. N. Rothon and published by iSmithers Rapra Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an overview of particulate filler production and use. Each filler type has different properties and these in turn are influenced by the particle size, shape and surface chemistry. Filler characteristics are discussed from costs to particle morphology. Practical aspects of filler grading are described and the principal filler types are outlined. Filler surface modification is an important topic. The main types of modifying agent and their uses are described, from fatty acids to functionalised polymers. An additional indexed section containing several hundred abstracts from the Rapra Polymer Library database gives useful references for further reading.
