Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ante-Bellum Southern Commercial Conventions The period from 1820 to 1860 was one of intense sectional rivalry. Politically, this rivalry was evidenced by the desire of the South to annex more territory in order to gain additional slave states. This political contest is marked by such events as the Missouri Compromise, the annexation of Texas followed by the Mexican War and the acquisition of California, the Compromise of 1850, the attempt to secure Cuba, the Kansas Nebraska Bill, and the Dred Scott decision. It finally culmi nated in the election of a President on a platform of non extension of slavery, which precipitated the Civil War. Side by side with this political rivalry was an economic contest which, in point of importance, is scarcely inferior to the political contest. In the colonial period the South was largely agricultural, and even in the middle and northern sections agriculture pre dominated. But the sterile soil of New England was not well suited for agriculture, while its forests did furnish considerable quantities of timber. It was because of natural causes that New England turned to shipbuilding and commerce. The Em bargo and the War of 1812 resulted in the temporary stopping of that trade and led New England to utilize her water power. It was in this way that extensive cotton manufactures came into existence in America. With the conclusion of peace Eng lish merchants attempted to flood American markets with their products in an endeavor to stifle these manufactures While still in their infancy. It was this situation that paved the way for the Tariff of 1816 - the first real protective tariff in our his tory. The record shows that the southern members of Con gress voted with the North on the tariff question in the hope that the protection thus secured would be of assistance in promoting southern manufactures. Hyde analyzes educational development in the Gulf South before the Civil War, not only revealing a thriving private and public education system, but also offering insight into the worldview and aspirations of the people inhabiting the region. While historians have tended to emphasize that much of the antebellum South had no public school system and offered education only to elites in private institutions, Hyde’s work suggests a different pattern of development in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, where citizens actually worked to extend schooling across the region. As a result, students learned in a variety of settings—in their own homes with a family member or hired tutor, at private or parochial schools, and in public free schools. Regardless of the venue, Hyde shows that the ubiquity of learning in the region proves how highly southerners valued education. As early as the 1820s and 1830s, legislators in these states sought to increase access to education for less wealthy residents through financial assistance to private schools. Urban governments in the region were the first to acquiesce to voters’ demands, establishing public schools in New Orleans, Natchez, and Mobile. The success of these schools led residents in rural areas to lobby their local legislatures for similar opportunities. Despite an economic downturn in the late 1830s that limited legislative appropriations for education, the economic recovery of the 1840s ushered in a new era of educational progress. The return of prosperity, Hyde suggests, coincided with the maturation of Jacksonian democracy—a political philosophy that led southerners to demand access to privileges formerly reserved for the elite, including schooling. Hyde explains that while Jacksonian ideology inspired voters to lobby for schools, the value southerners placed on learning was rooted in republicanism: they believed a representative democracy needed an educated populace to survive. Consequently, by 1860 all three states had established statewide public school systems. Schooling in the Antebellum South successfully challenges the conventional wisdom that an elitist educational system prevailed in the South and adds historical depth to an understanding of the value placed on public schooling in the region.

This stereotyped character appears primarily in the pulpy sensation fiction of popular writers like George Lippard, Ned Buntline, Emerson Bennett, and others. But this figure also plays an important role in the sometimes sensational work of canonical writers such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, and Walt Whitman. Whatever the medium, this character, always overdetermined, does consistent cultural work. This book contends that, as the figure who embodies money and capitalism in the antebellum imagination, the sensational Jew is the character who most fully represents a felt anxiety about the increasingly unstable nature of a range of social categories in the antebellum US, and the sense of loss and self-hatred so often lurking in the background of modern Gentile identity. Each chapter examines a different form of sensationalism (urban gothic; sentimental city mysteries; anti-Tom plantation narratives; etc.), and a different set of anxieties (threats to class status; collapsing regional identity; the uncertain status of Whiteness and other racial categories; etc.). Throughout, the sensational Jew acts both as a figure of proteophobia (fear of disorder and ambivalence), and as the figure who embodies in uncanny form a more fulfilling and socially coherent form of identity that predates the modern liberal selfhood of the post-Enlightenment world. The sensational Jew is therefore a revealing figure in antebellum culture, as well as an important antecedent to contemporary antisemitism in the US.
