This book was released on 1998 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The THERMIE programme aims to promote greater use of new and innovative European energy technologies and to assist energy technology transfer across the Community The Transport Targeted Projects (TTP) originated from the need to address the energy problems of the urban transport sector in particular, by integrating a range of measures and best available technologies with the objective of improving and promoting public transport tin medium-sized cities. Three projects were selected: ANTARES, ENTRANCE and JUPITER, involving 21 cities and regions from 11 Member States. The projects, which commenced in 1993/4 and ended in 1996/7, involved the development implementation and demonstration of a variety of large scale demonstration measures in cities and regions with a range of sizes and structures." -- Summary.

Book Seawater Desalination

Download or read book Seawater Desalination written by Andrea Cipollina and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-24 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A growing proportion of the world’s population is dependent on Seawater Desalination as a source of fresh water for both potable and civil use. One of the main drawbacks of conventional desalination technologies is the substantial energy requirement, which is facing cost increases in the global energy market. "Seawater Desalination" presents an overview of conventional and non-conventional technologies, with a particular focus on the coupling of renewable energies with desalination processes. The first section of this book presents, in a technical but reader-friendly way, an overview of currently-used desalination processes, from thermal to membrane processes, highlighting the relevant technical features, advantages and disadvantages, and development potential. It also gives a rapid insight into the economic aspects of fresh water production from seawater. The second section of the book presents novel processes which use Renewable Energies for fresh water production. From the first solar still evaporators, which artificially reproduced the natural cycle of water, technology has progressed to develop complex systems to harness energy from the sun, wind, tides, waves, etc. and then to use this energy to power conventional or novel desalination processes. Most of these processes are still at a preliminary stage of development, but some are already being cited as examples in remote areas, where they are proving to be valuable in solving the problems of water scarcity. A rapid growth in these technologies is foreseen in the coming years. This book provides a unique foundation, within the context of present and future sustainability, for professionals, technicians, managers, and private and public institutions operating in the area of fresh water supply.

Book Biomass and Green Chemistry

Download or read book Biomass and Green Chemistry written by Sílvio Vaz Jr. and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the main vegetable biomass types, their chemical characteristics and their potential to replace oil as raw material for the chemical industry, according to the principles of green chemistry. Authors from different scientific and technical backgrounds, from industry and academia, give an overview of the state of the art and ongoing developments. Aspects including bioeconomy, biorefineries, renewable chemistry and sustainability are also considered, given their relevance in this context. Furthermore, the book reviews green chemistry principles and their relation to biomass, while also exploring the main processes for converting biomass into bioproducts. The need to develop renewable feedstock for the chemical industry to replace oil has been identified as a major strategic challenge for the 21st century. In this context, the use of different types of vegetable biomass – starch, lignocellulosic, oleaginous, saccharide and algae – can be seen as a viable alternative to the use of non-renewable, more expensive raw materials. Furthermore, it offers a model for adding economic value to the agro industrial chains such as soybean, sugarcane, corn and forests, among others. This will in turn contribute to the sustainability of a wide range of chemicals, mainly organics and their transformation processes, which are widely used by modern society.
