We are most grateful to these authors and to those we recruited to write the additional chapters necessary to fill the significant gaps. We acknowledge also the sacrifice of some who presented results of original research and have thus suffered a longer time than usual to publication. The timing of publication however has provided the opportunity to highlight recent discussions and resolutions made within the Antarctic Treaty forum to protect wildlife against disease and to include responses by Government and non-Government operators in Antarctica. These developments mostly followed from the Workshop on Diseases of Antarctic Wildlife. The book comprises 17 chapters presented in two parts. Wildlife disease consists of reviews, case studies and health assessments, and External factors covers the environmental, administrative and legal aspects. Each chapter is complete and c- tains all references. Six important documents are provided as Appendices. These present methods, reviews and other documents which are referred to in one or more chapters but are not readily available. There are many related topics we have been unable to cover that would enhance the understanding of health and disease processes in Antarctica. While we ackno- edge their importance they are outside the scope of the present volume. Such topics include epidemiology, new and emerging infectious diseases and the effects of climate change. These topics are referred to in the various chapters where ref- ences to source material are given.

Static tests consisted of standard ring tensile strength and simple beam or flexural strength tests. The strength data were plotted on a base of the brine volume for each test. The test results indicate that the annual sea ice at McMurdo Sound is capable of supporting cargo type aircraft. Snow runways capable of supporting a C-130 aircraft on wheels and providing marginal support to a C-121 can be constructed either with the Peter plow or with the pulvimixer. Book excerpt: Detailed ultrasonic velocity measurements were made on snow and ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica in order to study velocity anisotropy and its relationship to the petrofabric analysis of these cores. In addition, ultrasonic velocities were measured in the near-surface snow layers at Byrd Station and South Pole Station, Antarctica, to provide a detailed velocity profile in the region of the ice sheet where the velocity is greatly influenced by the snow structure. The experimental arrangement, including the design of equipment, measurement errors, techniques, and problems encountered in the study, is discussed. The theory of wave propagation in a general anisotropic medium is reviewed and a detailed presentation of this theory, concerning transversely isotropic media, is given. A method is developed for calculating a theoretical velocity model from the petrofabric analysis of the ice cores, thus providing a means of testing the theory with field and laboratory observations. Thus a knowledge of their ecology is essential to the understanding of various biotic balances and processes. That several species live in the area of 85°S latitude in the face of harsh climatic factors is of great concern to the ecologist and the physiologist—therin lie many unanswered questions for future research.
