Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Antarctic Manual: For the Use of the Expedition of 1901 These Arctic manuals served their purpose, by giving easy access to information, otherwise inaccessible, which was required by the officers in their scientific investigations. Nor did their usefulness cease with the return of the expedition. They have been sought after and valued by subsequent Arctic explorers. Baron N orden skjold has told me that, during the voyage of the Vega, when the N orth-east Passage was discovered, the books most in request were the blue book and the white book, as they called the Arctic manuals. I was convinced that an Antarctic Manual' for the Expedition of 1901 would be even more useful, if prepared with the same object in View and on similar lines. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s most isolated continent has spawned some of the most unusual words in the English language. In the space of a mere century, a remarkable vocabulary has evolved to deal with the extraordinary environment and living organisms of the Antarctic and subantarctic. Here, for the first time, is a complete guide to the origin and definitions of Antarctic words. Like other historical dictionaries, The Antarctic Dictionary gives the reader quotations for each word. These quotations are the life-blood of the dictionary — more than 15 000 quotations from about 1000 different sources give the reader a unique insight into the way the language of Antarctica has evolved. The reader will find out what it means to be slotted, the shortcomings of homers, the joys of a donga and the hazards of a growler. The Antarctic Dictionary has been meticulously researched, and will appeal to all those who have been to the frozen continent or have ever dreamed of going there. It will also appeal to those fascinated by the development of language. With a forward by Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

Book Proposal for an Antarctic Manual

Download or read book Proposal for an Antarctic Manual written by Sir Clements Robert Markham and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Clements Markham's handwritten proposal for a compendium of useful information related to Antarctica to accompany the British National Antarctic Expedition of 1901. The completed manual was edited by George Murray and published by the Royal Geographic Society in 1901. Markham provided the preface to the published volume. The idea for the proposal was fashioned after the arctic manual carried on the 1875 Nares expedition to Ellesmere Island. Markham's submission proposes botanical, geological, meteorological and geographical topics. The published volume was carried on the expedition by Robert Falcon Scott on RRS Discovery. The proposal is accompanied by a July 27, 1903 letter from John Walter Gregory, then at the University of Melbourne, to a Miss Smith concerning the transfer of the document to her.

Book The Lost Men

Download or read book The Lost Men written by Kelly Tyler-Lewis and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007-03-27 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of the last odyssey of the heroic age of Antarctic exploration Sir Ernest Shackleton’s 1914 Antarctic endeavor is legend, but for sheer heroism and tragic nobility, nothing compares to the saga of the Ross Sea party. This crew of explorers landed on the opposite side of Antarctica from the Endurance with a mission to build supply depots for Shackleton’s planned crossing of the continent. But their ship disappeared in a gale, leaving ten inexperienced, ill-equipped men to trek 1,356 miles in the harshest environment on earth. Drawing on the men’s own journals and photographs, The Lost Men is a masterpiece of historical adventure, a book destined to be a classic in the vein of Into Thin Air.
