Download or read book Fr ulein Schmidt and Mr Anstruther written by Elizabeth von Arnim and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2022-12-13 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel centres on Rose-Marie Schmidt, a twenty-five-year-old woman who lives with her father, a professor, and is considered a spinster by most of the inhabitants of their small German town. The story weaves in a romantic entanglement as Rose-Marie falls in love with a poor but high-born young Englishman, Roger Anstruther, who is a student of her father’s. After Roger professes his love for Rose-Marie, he returns to England, leaving her to write charming letters to her father’s former student. A delightful epistolary novel, ‘Fräulein Schmidt and Mr. Anstruther’ will be enjoyed by fans of Jane Austen’s novel. Elizabeth von Arnim was an English novelist – a cousin of the New Zealand-born writer Katherine Mansfield – born as Mary Annette Beauchamp in Australia in 1866. She married a German aristocrat and her earliest written works are set in Germany. Von Arnim launched her career as a writer with her satirical and semi-autobiographical work ‘Elizabeth and Her German Garden’, published anonymously in 1898. Although she was known by the name May in her early life, when she began writing, her success as ‘Elizabeth’ meant that her writings were ascribed to the name Elizabeth von Arnim.

Book excerpt: The Anstruther Lass is a historical romance set in the Dundee Jute Mills in 1865. Lana, a young widow from Anstruther, works at a mill and falls in love with a Dutch sailor Stefan, the son of a rich jute trader and shipping magnate. Problems arise when the mill manager, Campbell, also falls in love with Lana and pays local Anstruther smugglers to kill his rival. Meanwhile, a serial killer is targeting sailors in Dundee. The smugglers rescue Stefan from this killer and decide not to assassinate him, but sell him to the British Navy. Her sister hides a pregnant Lana until the birth of Lanas baby, and another sister pretends the baby is hers to ensure the babys acceptance in society. When the baby is weaned, Lana returns to work, and Campbell offers to provide for her if she will become his mistress. When Lana rejects his offer, Campbell angrily shouts that it is useless to wait for Stefan as he paid the smugglers to kill him. Lana, incredulous, confronts the smugglers. Ton, Stefans father, arrives in Anstruther to find his son and meets Lana, only to be told of his disappearance. Where is Stefan? Is he alive or dead? Will Lana ever see him again?

Book excerpt: Finalist for the Desmond Elliott Prize A "superb debut"* novel—based on the story of the author's grandmother—following an aristocratic woman who abandons her family and her money in search of a life she can claim as her own. (*The Guardian) Enid Campbell, granddaughter of a duke, grew up surrounded by servants, wanting for nothing except love. But when her brother died in the First World War, a new heir was needed, and it was up to Enid to provide it. A troubled marriage and three children soon followed. Broken by postpartum depression, overwhelmed by motherhood and a loveless marriage, Enid made the shocking decision to abandon her family, thereby starting a chain of events—a kidnap, a court case, and selling her son to her sister for £500—that reverberated through the generations. Interweaving one significant day in 1964, when it seems the family will reunite for one last time, with a decade during the interwar period, A Perfect Explanation explores the perils of aristocratic privilege, where inheritance is everything and happiness is hard won.
