Schultz demonstrates that in addition to observances of marriage, fertility, and childbirth, there were more--and more important--religious opportunities available to Roman women than are commonly considered. Based on research in ancient literature, inscriptions, and archaeological remains from the fifth to the first century B.C.E., Schultz's study shows that women honored gods unaffiliated with domestic matters, including Hercules and Jupiter; they took part in commercial, military, and political rites; they often worshipped alongside men; and they were not confined to the private sphere, the traditional domain of women. The Vestal Virgins did not stand alone but were instead the most prominent members of a group of women who held high-profile religious positions: priestesses of Ceres, Liber, and Venus; the flaminica Dialis and the regina sacrorum; other cult officials; and aristocratic matrons who often took leading roles in religious observances even though they were not priestesses. Schultz argues that women were vital participants--both professional and nonprofessional--in the religion of the Roman Republic and that social and marital status, in addition to gender, were important factors in determining their opportunities for religious participation in the public sphere.

Ma quando mi resi conto che il Buddha (il Risvegliato) non pretendeva essere un Dio o un profeta, bensì esempio supremo di ciò che l'essere umano può diventare, mi dissi: “Questo sì che ha un senso: il Risvegliato insegna agli altri, come risvegliarsi". Questo testo vuole contribuire alla comprensione della natura pratica e concreta dell'insegnamento del Buddha, il cui cuore è l'esercizio meditativo. Vi sono delineate le sue caratteristiche essenziali, per offrire al lettore non specializzato un'introduzione generale, che possa incoraggiare a farne esperienza. “Nel 1972 in Sri Lanka (...) ebbi la fortuna di leggere le parole del Buddha: la spiegazione di quello che lui stesso aveva sperimentato, e di come anche altri possano arrivare alla stessa esperienza. E così scoprii la straordinaria semplicità e la profonda concretezza del sentiero di quiete e visione profonda, da lui indicato. Mi dedicai, quindi, allo studio dell'antica lingua pali e dei testi. Nel 1974 feci un corso di meditazione Vipassana con il maestro indo-birmano S.N. Goenka; questa pratica dell'insegnamento del Buddha mi convinse ad accettare la sua validità , come guida di vita, e ad impegnarmi da allora al continuativo esercizio meditativo di Vipassana. Ben sapendo che è una strada lunga, a ogni passo mi appare giusta e benefica."

Book excerpt: The notion of light verb constructions has been traditionally related to the ‘insignificance’ of the verb, which is described as a grammatical item only codifying TAM system and φ-features, whereas the whole predicative content is thought to be conveyed by the noun. This book deals with the light verb constructions as instances of complex verbs, intended as multi-predicational but monoclausal structures. This allows to deepen the actual verb lightness, the effective noun predicativity, as well as their effect on the cohesion of the construction. The papers in this volume reflect on the concrete contribution of noun and verb to the event and argument structure, and on the relevance of semantically different noun classes for the verb selection. From different theoretical approaches, data of a great variety of languages are investigated, such as Indo-European languages – both modern (Germanic, Slavic, Romance and Iranian languages) and ancient (Latin and Ancient Greek) – but also Mandarin Chinese, and different polysynthetic languages (e.g. Ket, Nivkh, Murrinh-Patha, Kiowa, Bininj Gun-wok, Ainu). The range of topics, languages and perspectives presented in this book make it of great interest to both theoretical and applied linguists.
