Book Kagero Colors

Download or read book Kagero Colors written by 森山大道 and published by Powershovel. This book was released on 2007-08-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This gorgeous, text-free, oversized collection of full-bleed color and black-and-white photographs compiles a host of previously unseen color nudes together with the collection that formed Daido Moriyama's extremely rare fourth solo book, Kagerou, published in 1972. Here, Moriyama captures bondage and nudity with a self-described "samurai tenderness"--a mood, an intimacy and yet also a distance--as if the artist might have snapped the photographs against his will. The stagings are not careful. They are rushed, immediate and mysteriously visceral. Even the knots seem to have been hastily tied. Each of the 60 photographs gathered here suggests that something has happened or something will happen--something furious, resonant or highly anticipated. There are no models smiling, no boasts of romantic conquest, rarely even a face, and certainly no hint of playfulness. Rather, this is a collection of desires, of mothers, sisters and lovers.

Book Punishment Exercise in Gothic

Download or read book Punishment Exercise in Gothic written by Douglas Gordon and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Douglas Gordon has proven himself a master of adaptation, bending the works of other artists through his own refractive lens. One of the most decorated artists of his time, he has stretched Hitchcock's "Psycho" from two hours to twenty-four, he has set "Taxi Driver"'s unsettling "You talking to me?" scene into a two-screen projection, and now, he's taken his obsession with a novel by Scottish writer James Hogg (1770-1835) to new lengths. Gordon's "Confessions" is an immersive environment based on "The Memoirs and Private Confessions of a Justified Sinner," a narrative of shifting perspectives that traces a strict Calvinist young man's descent into a series of murders. Gordon's ingenious and disturbing work used the three levels of the Kunsthaus Bregenz, where it first appeared, to explore different sensory experiences of the story, from a printing room that produces the story's pages on an industrial-age offset press to a black-light-shrouded space where the viewer only hears the story to an installation of large-format and silent film projections on the front and back of a diaphanous screen. This catalogue, designed by Bruce Mau, echoes the format of the exhibition with three slipcased volumes that give the reader an experience comparable to that of the show.

Book Jia Aili

  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Jia Aili written by Jia Aili and published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. This book was released on 2017 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of the Chinese artist Jia Aili (*1979 in Liaoning) possesses an unparalleled intensity. Whether reflecting on China's inauguration of the atomic bomb or the first satellites in 1970, the theme of Aili's oil paintings is the dramatic transformation of Chinese society over the past 50 years. The works simultaneously also convey a feeling of wonderment and fascination for the achievements and new possibilities that technological progress offers. It is a feeling Aili has particularly developed in his apocalyptic-seeming desert landscapes, which only allow space for isolated masked figures, usually astronauts. The monograph documents Aili's exhibitions over the past 10 years and shows the young Chinese artist's disparate sources of inspiration with the aid of discussions of individual works.

Book Dario Robleto

Book excerpt: Survival Does Not Lie in the Heavens looks at Dario Robleto's ingenious adaptations of nineteenth-century folk traditions to explore mortality and memorialization. Robleto's sculptural objects use the model of the folksy mantelpiece keepsake--the elaborately framed photograph, the trophy, commemorative embroidery--and counter their traditionally saccharine, sentimental appeal with brilliant conceptual gestures. Thus, paper pulped from soldier's letters home (from various wars) are repurposed to create a keepsake of silk, goldleaf and seashells; a homeopathic treatment for "Human Longing" includes medicine made from a ground-up recording of Sylvia Plath; and a framed memorial to Marie Louise Meilleur, who died at the aged of 117, includes hair lockets made of stretched audiotape recordings of other supercentarians. Throughout these works, Robleto's concern is with the human management of death through objects, affirming that the task of survival takes place here on earth.

Book A tribute to Franz West

Download or read book A tribute to Franz West written by Galerie Konzett and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'A tribute to Franz West, ' all of those persons whom the artist considers a secret source, a "focus imaginarius," are brought to light. As the arc of participating artists describes Franz West's lifetime, its movement leads directly to that space of artistic productivity that constitutes West's history of reception and impact. The exhibited works thus also represent a panorama of "inner addressees" of the artist Franz West, which he also required for his production. In turn, the exhibition participants may also have needed a Franz West to objectivize for their part, in the form of the works shown here. Franz West was one of the most important international artists. He achieved worldwide fame with his "Paßstücke" (adaptives), his furniture and his sculptures for interior and exterior spaces.0Exhibition: Galerie Konzett, Wien, Austria (22.03-25.05.2013). 0.

Book Bill Bollinger

Download or read book Bill Bollinger written by Bill Bollinger and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his short life, Bollinger created an oeuvre that is complex, radical and intense, and well worth rediscovering. At the same time, the show aims to contribute to the current reappraisal of hitherto neglected art positions. At the height of the space race, he was creating sculptures that explore the gravity, balance and specific properties of a wide variety of materials. The cosmos and water are key elements in the work of Bollinger, who was fascinated by curved space, the vertical and the horizontal, resulting in evanescent, purist, energy-laden works with a radical edge that still have the power to astound us, even today.
