Book Anselm Kiefer Louisiana

Download or read book Anselm Kiefer Louisiana written by Anselm Kiefer and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The innovation of Anselm Kiefer's majestic art has been to combine history painting's grandeur of scale and concept with Abstract Expressionism's emphatic materiality and worked surface. This unusual combination has made for works of Wagnerian ambition, as Kiefer draws on German history, literature and mythology to attack what Herfried Münkler, writing in the Louisiana Museum's new Kiefer monograph, describes as a uniquely German bourgeois yearning for "clear patterns of behavior defined by virtues and values." The tragic dimensions of this yearning bestow upon Kiefer's post-Holocaust canvases an immense gravity, conveyed through a sober, murky palette and scrawled poetical inscriptions. Kiefer often burns materials, or adds sand, to embellish this mood of weathered decay. This new monograph surveys works from the beginning of Kiefer's career in the late 1960s (including spreads of his early book works) to 2010.

Book excerpt: The first site-specific outdoor public sculpture ever to be commissioned for the United States from Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) was unveiled in 2019 at the top of Rockefeller Center's Channel Gardens, facing Fifth Avenue. Titled 'Uraeus', the work consists of a gigantic open book with eagle's wings 30 feet in span, both made of lead, on top of a 20-foot-tall lead-clad stainless steel column. Clustered around the base of the column are further outsize lead books, while a large snake coils up the column. Lead is one of the artist's preferred materials for its soft, fluid properties traditionally associated with alchemical transformation, especially its second stage: dissolution. In Kiefer's mind alchemy is a symbol for the artist you have to destroy and then recreate. Uraeus extends his vocabulary of striking mythic forms, presented at an arresting new scale. It explores longtime motifs in his work that, in this context and contemporary moment, resonate in powerful new ways. Kiefer is the most prominent German artist of the generation born in or shortly after World War II, a figure of international standing who was recently awarded the J. Paul Getty Medal (2017).

Book excerpt: The catalogue accompanies an exhibition that brings together many of the interests that have characterised Kiefer's work for decades, including mythology, astronomy and history. Located across the entire Bermondsey space, it features a large-scale installation and paintings that draw on the scientific concept known as string theory. 00String theory is a mathematical model that attempts to articulate the known fundamental interactions of the universe and forms of matter. In this new body of work, Kiefer has 'tried to bring together theories of seemingly extraneous principles from different cultures and histories', so that complex scientific theory is connected with subject matter from ancient mythology. In so doing, Kiefer makes visual the idea that, "Everything is connected: the missing letters, string theory, the Norns, the Gordian knot."00Exhibition: White Cube Bermondsey, London, UK (15.11.2019 - 26.01.2020).

Book excerpt: In 1974 Anselm Kiefer produced Erotik im Fernen Osten oder: Transition from Cool to Warm, a book of watercolors. Thirty years later, Gagosian Gallery’s newest catalogue marks Kiefer’s return to the medium, with works made between 2012 and 2015. More than forty unique artists’s books, their pages painted with gesso to mimic marble, can be found in the exciting new tome. Artists’s books are an integral part of Kiefer’s oeuvre; over time they have ranged in scale from the intimate to the monumental, and in materials, from lead to dried plant matter. In this selection of books, the sequences of narrative information and visual effect evoke the fragile endurance of the sacred and the spiritual through the female figures on the marbled pages.

Download or read book Anselm Kiefer written by Anselm Kiefer and published by Hatje Cantz. This book was released on 2001 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in the final weeks of World War II--in what Germans who wished to erase it from collective memory called Year Zero--Anselm Kiefer has long sought to come to grips with his country's Nazi past. This monograph traces his development as an artist through four blocks of work which reflect the most important currents in his complex oeuvre. Moving chronologically from microcosm to macrocosm, from the intimate spaces of "Attic Images" in the 70s through the vaster "Stone Halls" of the early 80s and the archaic-looking clay architectures he created in the 90s, Kiefer's pictorial spaces climaxed in the endless universes of "Images of the Cosmos and Constellations," painted at the close of the century. With the monumental "Sunflower Paintings," the progression was complete and he returned to earth. Also included are photographs by Thomas Flechtner which document the greenhouses, underground corridor systems, and installations realized by Kiefer at his studio estate in Barjac since 1993.

Book excerpt: This book brings together the 2010 output of the American Law Institute (ALI) project on World Trade Organization law. Each chapter focuses on a different dispute from the adjudicating bodies of the WTO. Each case is jointly evaluated by well-known experts in trade law and international economics. ALI reporters critically review the jurisprudence of WTO adjudicating bodies and evaluate whether the ruling 'makes sense' from an economic as well as a legal point of view and, if not, whether the problem lies in the interpretation of the law or the law itself. The studies do not always cover all issues discussed in a case, but they seek to discuss both the procedural and the substantive issues that form, in the reporters' views, the 'core' of the dispute. This paperback will be an invaluable resource for students, lecturers and practitioners of international trade law.

Book The Moon From Inner Worlds to Outer Space

Download or read book The Moon From Inner Worlds to Outer Space written by Marie Laurberg and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myths of the moon in the arts and sciences, 50 years after the first manned landing The moon has long furnished humankind with an artistic icon, an image of longing and object of scientific inquiry. Encompassing art, film, literature, architecture, design, natural history and historical objects, and published on the 50th anniversary of the first manned landing (July 20, 1969), The Moon surveys the iconography of the moon, from Romantic landscape paintings to space-age art. It takes the 1969 landing as a thematic fulcrum and a culmination of the deep-rooted cultural conceptions invested in the space race in the 1960s, from David Bowie to Disney. The book also accounts for the science of the moon throughout the ages, from Galileo to NASA, addressing the many lunar myths that have existed throughout time. Also explored here is moonlight, an important theme in the Romantic nocturnal landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich, J.C. Dahl and Carl Julius von Leypold. Another powerful artistic genealogy is associated with science fiction, a genre that has on occasion influenced space programs: Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon (1865), for instance, famously inspired NASA's Apollo programs. Film pioneers such as Georges Méliès and Fritz Lang created cinematic lunar voyages, and in the 1930s, surrealist artists such as Joseph Cornell, Salvador Dalí and Max Ernst explored the moonlit landscape as psychological allegory. Later, during the Cold War, superpowers on both sides of the Iron Curtain worked closely with artists to orchestrate and interpret the space race: Robert Rauschenberg, for example, was one of eight artists invited by NASA to witness Apollo 11, while artists in the Soviet Union played a central role in building the cult of the cosmonaut. The Moon looks at all these lunar themes and myths, in a thrilling and inspirational gathering for anyone who has felt the moon's pull on their imagination.
