Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A monograph on the acclaimed French-Albanian artist Anri Sala, whose multichannel installations explore the perception of sound and images in relation to architectural spaces. Since his debut film, Intervista (Finding the Words) (1998), to his recent installations that explore spatial and temporal manipulations of music, Anri Sala has developed a widely acclaimed multimedia practice founded in the interplay of images, sound and architectural space. Probing notions of memory and time—both personal and historical—Sala’s works engage the viewer’s awareness of being present while calling attention to the political dynamics of space. Anri Sala: Answer Me is an overview of Sala’s career to date. Essays by Natalie Bell, Tacita Dean, Mark Godfrey, Boris Groys and Christine Macel, and an interview with the artist by Massimiliano Gioni, offer new perspectives on Sala’s oeuvre and guide readers through the development of his practice.

Book Anri Sala

  • Author : Michael Fried
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2023-04-04
  • ISBN : 0253068568
  • Pages : 234 pages

Download or read book Anri Sala written by Michael Fried and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-04 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anri Sala is one of the most gifted and accomplished visual artists of his generation. Michael Fried first encountered Sala's video, film and installation art in 2005 and has been following his work since. This collection of essays focuses on what Fried identifies as a few major and recurring themes in Sala's work, such as the treatment of absorption and the overarching issues of anti-theatricality and presentness. Throughout the book, which is illustrated with numerous colour stills from Anri Sala's videos, Fried pursues a highly personal approach of combining extremely fine-grained structural and thematic readings of individual works with philosophical and theoretical reflections often drawing on major thinkers in the Western philosophical tradition, including Ludwig Wittgenstein and the eighteenth-century philosopher Friedrich Schiller. Fried also provides unique insight into his own renowned critical and theoretical work, which has exercised such great influence in art history and criticism for nearly sixty years. Employing in these moments a conversational tone, speaking directly to the reader in his own voice about his own work, he reviews the genesis and development of his theories and critical constructs in light of Anri Sala's videos, creating a highly productive back and forth between Sala and the contemporary art world on the one hand and Fried's often more historical studies and concepts on the other. For readers of Michael Fried, the result is not only a stimulating discussion of Sala and the artistic and theoretical tradition in whose light his work can be viewed, but also a vital reflection on Fried's own foundational ideas, how they came to be and how they are relevant today.

Book 51N4E Skanderbeg Square Tirana

Download or read book 51N4E Skanderbeg Square Tirana written by Freek Persyn and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication shows the ambitious transformation of Skanderbeg Square, in Tirana, Albania. The project was initiated by the then Mayor of Tirana and current Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama and realized under current mayor Erion Veliaj. It is the result of a collaboration between Belgian architecture office 51N4E, Albanian artist Anri Sala, Belgian environmental designers Plant en Houtgoed, and Albanian company for project implementation iRI. Transforming the central square of a nation that is founded only in 1912 and that is now a developing young democracy, the project compresses all the hope and tension that come with that transition. With its focus on transition, this publication is a pilot episode of a series called Chapters, a progressive documentation of the work of architecture office 51N4E and its collaborations with related people and practices. Every Chapter combines the presentation of one or more projects with a forward-looking reflection on the key issues that shape them. Produced progressively over the course of the next years, the ambition of the whole series is to outline how 51N4E aims to engage with contemporary society in all of its complexity.

Book excerpt: Against the Anthropocene scrutinizes the proposal that we are in a human-driven epoch regarding climate change. In this slender but dense volume, cultural theorist T.J. Demos analyzes the biases within contemporary visual culturepopular science websites, remote sensing and SatNav imagery, eco-activist mobilizations, and experimental artistic projectsdemonstrating that it does not merely describe a geologic period, but actively supports the neoliberal financialization of nature, anthropocentric political economy, and endorsement of geo-engineering as a preferred method of approaching climate change. To develop creative alternatives, Demos argues we need to carefully consider the underlying motives the Anthropocene thesis. T.J. Demos is Professor of Art and Visual Culture and Director of the Center for Creative Ecologies at UC Santa Cruz. Book Documents of Utopia

Download or read book Documents of Utopia written by Paolo Magagnoli and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This timely volume discusses the experimental documentary projects of some of the most significant artists in today's global art world: Hito Steyerl, Joachim Koester, Tacita Dean, Matthew Buckingham, Zoe Leonard, Jean-Luc Moulaene, Ilya & Emilia Kabakov, Jon Thomson & Alison Craighead, and Anri Sala. Their films, videos, and photographic series address the history of failed Utopian experiments and counter-hegemonic social practices. This study illustrates the political significance of these artistic practices and offers a crucial contribution to the debate on the conditions of Utopian thinking in late capitalist society, arguing that contemporary artists' interest in the past is the result of a shift within the temporal organization of the Utopian imagination from its futuristic pole toward the pole of remembrance. This book therefore provides one of the first critical examinations of the recent turn towards documentary in the field of contemporary art." -- Back cover.

These images have a wide-ranging subject matter yet are linked by the artists shared meditation on photography and film as the quintessential media of the archive. It traces innovations within classical music practice, showing how these offer divergent visions for its future. The interdisciplinary contributions to the volume highlight the way contrasting ideas of the future can effect change in the present. A rich balance of theoretical and practical discussion brings authority to this collection, which lays the foundations for timely responses to challenges ranging from the concept of the musical work, and the colonial values within Western musical culture, to unsustainable models of orchestral touring. The authors highlight how labour to meet the demands of particular futures for classical music might impact its creation and consumption, presenting case studies to capture the mediating roles of technology and community engagement. This book will be of interest to scholars and students in the fields of musicology and the sociology of music, as well as a general audience of practitioners, freelance musicians, music administrators and educators.

Book excerpt: "It would make a beautiful ruin." Eero Saarinen Terminal 5 was a group show curated by Rachel K. Ward at Eero Saarinen's landmark 1962 TWA Terminal at JFK Airport. Originally scheduled to run from 28 September 2004 - 31 January 2005, the Port Authority closed the exhibition after the "controversial" opening night party. Initiated as a form of "dedication to the building" the exhibition explored themes drawn from the history and nature of travel, and responded to the significance of the architecture itself. The catalogue is a secondary site for participating artists, writers and critics to engage with ideas raised by the exhibition and air travel. Designed by David Reinfurt, ORG, it is divided into three sections: architectural history, exhibition information, and air travel related essays, and balances extensive visual material related to the site and the exhibition with critical and historical texts. The show included works by Vanessa Beecroft, Douglas Coupland, Kendell Geers, Dan Graham, Toland Grinnell, Fabrice Gygi, Mark Handforth, Jenny Holzer, Ryoji Ikeda, Just Another Rich Kid, Matthieu Laurette, Jonas Mekas, Aleksandra Mir, Jonathan Monk, Tom Sachs, Anri Sala, Tobias Wong, et al.
