Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a Navy SEAL's inspiring graduation speech, this #1 New York Times bestseller of powerful life lessons "should be read by every leader in America" (Wall Street Journal). If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better. Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve more, even in life's darkest moments. "Powerful." --USA Today "Full of captivating personal anecdotes from inside the national security vault." --Washington Post "Superb, smart, and succinct." --Forbes

Book Sandpiper Court Journal

Download or read book Sandpiper Court Journal written by David A. Bragen and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sandpiper Court Journal is a fictional account of the second civil war, which bears witness to the racial strife and struggle that thrusts itself upon an unprepared and unsuspecting United States of America. Having elected its first African-American president with an overwhelming majority, the country appeared finally to have become the great melting pot that it was often called. Felled by an assassin's bullet during the inauguration, the president-elect's death causes that great melting pot to bubble over as the two sides, separated by the colors of their skin, wage war in their struggle to survive. Master Sergeant Franklin B. Pierce and Anthony Joseph (TJ) Bender are two middle class, average Americans who happen to end up on opposite sides of the conflict. Pierce, following orders and waging war against his fellow Americans, is conflicted by the insanity of it all. His disciplined training invokes the fierceness of a seasoned warrior. But, his Christian underpinnings tell him to treat his fellow man with love and respect. TJ, a suburban homeowner in the Midwest, is simply trying to survive, fighting a rearguard action with his fellow neighbors as the enemy first attacks their suburb, and then, their subdivision.

Book excerpt: September 1941 approval was given for the formation of two long-range Air-Sea Rescue squadrons. No 279 Squadron was formed at Bircham Newton in Norfolk. In the period leading up to the formation of the squadron there had been much work done in relation to air-dropped survival equipment such as the Lindholme Dinghy Dropping Gear, the Bircham Barrel and the Thornaby Bag. These contained such items as water, food, first-aid kits and distress signals. 279 was the first squadron to employ the airborne lifeboat, which was carried beneath the bellies of the portly Hudson. In January 1942 a practical boat, fitted with oars, sails and engines was put into production with the intention of slinging it under the bomb bay of the Hudson and to drop it by parachute. In October 1944 the Squadron re-equipped with Warwick Mk I aircraft moved to Thornaby in the NE of England. By now its ASR net was cast wide and there were detachments at Tain, Fraserburgh, Wick and Banff (all in northern Scotland) and Reykjavik.

Book The Providence Steam Roller

Download or read book The Providence Steam Roller written by Greg D. Tranter and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-09-27 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An early NFL franchise, the Providence Steam Roller brought major league sports to Rhode Island for the first time. Playing at a bicycle arena known as the Cycledrome, the team thrilled thousands of fans in its brief history. Only a short time after sitting atop the pro football world for one glorious season, it ceased to exist. This book brings the Providence Steam Roller back to life in the first thorough examination of one of the most unusual franchises in NFL history. The team toiled in the NFL from 1925 to 1931 after nine years as an independent professional squad. The Steam Roller achieved many firsts in NFL history: it was the first NFL team in New England, hosted the first night game in NFL history, and is the last now-defunct team to win an NFL championship. Many who wore the black and orange uniform played professional football not for the money but for the love of the game and to represent the city of Providence.

Book excerpt: It was the decisive battle of World War I. German commander Erich Ludendorff called it "the black day of the German army." Many authors have stated that it was the beginning of the end of the great conflict. And yet, until now, no book has been published on the climactic battle at Amiens. Amiens was one of the first "modern" battles, and certainly the first attempted by the Allies. Employing the troops of five nations (including Canada) and utilizing secrecy, deception, and combined operations, the Allies won the first of a string of victories culminating in the Armistice one hundred days later.Amiens: Dawn of Victory is the first book to study the historic battle in minute detail. Using eyewitness accounts from dozens of survivors, plus many accounts, both published and unpublished, by the participants, the authors take us into the trenches, the tanks, and the cockpits.

If he married, it would be for strategic reasons, someone who could help him build his philanthropic foundation on an international scale. Which is why seeing Lise again has him torn. Having an old fling and an illegitimate child around might create a scandal that could destroy his efforts, yet he can’t deny the attraction they still have. Thinking to keep Lise and his secret son out of the spotlight, he requests they live in the royal palace and lures her by saying she can use his staff in her language-teaching pilot. Big mistake. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When two year old Daniel lay motionless on the floor staring at the ceiling, his mother had no idea that he was exemplifying the first symptoms of what would be diagnosed as autism two years later. The emergency room visit on that June 2002 afternoon resulted in a forty-eight hour hospital stay where Daniel was afterwards discharged with a simple, rough horseplay diagnosis. However, within the weeks that followed he lost his speech, hearing, and cognitive skills, eventually slipping into a world of his own. Daniel was born a very healthy, bouncing, bundle of joy. He was an even more active toddler. However, in one moment of time his laughter ceased, the pitterpatter of his little feet racing through the house ended, and his voice that was once heard in family conversations was replaced by ear-piercing screams and whines as he tried to communicate his needs. Convinced that Daniel was misdiagnosed, his mother prayed and began to seek help. Without knowing the giant she was facing, she relentlessly looked for answers and found them. On May 19, 2004, Daniel was diagnosed with autism. But that was not the end of the story! Instead, it was just the beginning! Rainbow Over My House is the amazing story of Daniels journey from pain and agony, to triumphant victory over autism! As you read this wonderful story you will laugh, cry tears of joy, and even cheer as it shares details of Daniels victory, such as him winning a potato sack race at a picnic! Expect your faith to be ignited as you find the hope and courage to once again believe in miracles!

On the very first morning, several booths are vandalized and products are stolen, among them the handknitted items Libby’s mom and her friends have made for charity. Everyone pitches in to get the booths rebuilt in time for the festival opening, but the calamities keep piling up. Dogs are becoming ill, one vendor’s business is being threatened with shutdown, and there’s more theft. None of the stolen items or destructive acts qualify as major crimes, and the police have their hands full with bigger things. Everyone is begging Libby to help track down the perpetrators. But when Libby and Shadow start investigating, someone turns the tables on her and she finds herself in a cold white room at the police station, accused. Why would someone go after the vendors and their livelihood? And who would want to see Libby blamed? If she can’t find the answers, she’s likely to be the one on trial.
