Book excerpt: Building on the success of his Christmas number for 1852, Dickens used the same framing concept for 1853’s Another Round of Stories by the Christmas Fire. This wide-ranging round features tales of angels, ghosts, and marriages that are as treacherous as they are inspiring. With more than one horrifying account of murder, the stories carry warning about love’s dangers as well as its delights. An impressive contributor list includes Elizabeth Gaskell and George A. Sala, whose poignant tales rival Dickens’ own.

Book excerpt: First published in 1979, this book looks at every aspect of the life and work of Elizabeth Gaskell, including her lesser known novels and writings — especially those concerning life in the industrial north of Victorian England. It shows how her work springs from a culture and society which pervades all she thought and wrote. An opening chapter explores her religion, culture, friendships and family. The major works are considered in turn and background material relevant to the novels’ industrial scenes is presented. The process of literary creation is charted in material drawn from letters and by examination of the manuscripts. Her short stories, journalism and letters are also considered.

Download or read book The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices written by Wilkie Collins and published by Hesperus Press. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A delightful meditation on the pleasures of bachelor bonding and an example of collaborative journalism at its best In autumn 1857, Charles Dickens embarked on a sightseeing trip to Cumberland with his friend, the rising star of literature Wilkie Collins. Writing together, they reported their adventures for Dickens' periodical Household Words, producing a showcase of both long-cherished and entirely novel sides of these well-loved men of letters. Boasting two ghost stories from undisputed masters of the genre, it also uniquely demonstrates their glee in caricaturing themselves and one another—Collins assumes the identity of Thomas Idle (a born-and-bred idler) and Dickens that of Francis Goodchild (laboriously idle). Through their fictional counterparts, the men relentlessly satirize Dickens' maniacal energy and Collins' idleness. The result is an exuberant diary of a journey and a rare insight into one of literature's most famed and intriguing friendships.
Download or read book Dino Buzzati and Anglo American Culture written by Valentina Polcini and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the relationship between Dino Buzzati’s fiction and Anglo-American culture by focusing on his re-use of visual texts (Arthur Rackham’s illustrations), narrative sources (Joseph Conrad’s novels), and topoi belonging to such genres as the seafaring tale, the ghost story and the Christmas story. Tracing Buzzati’s recurring theme of the loss of imagination, Dino Buzzati and Anglo-American Culture shows that, far from being a mere imitator, he carries on an original and conscious reworking of pre-existing literary motifs. Especially through the adoption of intertextual strategies, Buzzati laments the lack of an imaginative urge in contemporary society and attempts a recovery of the fantastic imagery of his models. Alongside a reconsideration of Buzzati’s intertextuality, this book offers new insights into Buzzati’s fantastic fiction, by highlighting its playful and ironic component as opposed to the more overtly pervading sense of gloominess and nostalgia. Furthermore, while filling a gap in the critical study of Buzzati in the English-speaking world, the book contributes towards a general reassessment of an author who, although regarded as minor for many years, can rightly be ranked among the masters of twentieth-century fantastic literature.
