Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The director of the Navarre Bible project at the University of Navarre in Spain brings together his thoughts on one of the most intriguing Gospel writers, St. John. St. John has been called “the theologian” because of the theological depth of his writing. He is often symbolically represented as an eagle because his writings soar to the heights of the divinity just as the eagle soars upward to the sun. If the Gospels are “the heart of all of Scripture,” and therefore the object of special veneration and study, then the Gospel of St. John deserves special attention as the summit of the four.

Why was a certain Scripture passage chosen for illumination rather than another? What materials and source imagery are behind the illuminations? The Art of The Saint John's Bible provides answers to these important questions and many others. Initially published in a series of three volumes, each book has now been revised by the author and included together in this helpful single volume. SinceThe Saint John's Bible is now complete, Susan Sink makes connections between recurring images and motifs throughout the work and reflects on the images with a view to the whole. Her book promises to intensify and expand the experience of all who come in contact with The Saint John's Bible.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1902 edition. Excerpt: ... and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus. 4 And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone. the first group of four, but he is outside the chosen three, in spite of this early call. 41. He first findeth, &c The meaning of 'first' becomes almost certain when we remember S. John's characteristic reserve about himself. Both disciples hurry to tell their own brothers the good tidings, that the Messiah has been found: S. Andrew finds his brother first, and afterwards S. John finds his; but we are left to infer the latter point. S. Andrew thrice brings others to Christ; Peter, the lad with the loaves (vi. 8), and certain Greeks (xii. 22); and excepting Mark xiii. 3 we know scarcely anything else about him. Thus it would seem as if in these three incidents S. John had given us the key to his character. And here we have another characteristic of this Gospel--the lifelike way in which the less prominent figures are sketched. Besides Andrew we have Philip, i. 44, vi. 5, xii. 21, xiv. 8; Thomas, xi. 16, xiv. 5; xx. 24--29; Nathanael, i. 45--52; Nicodemus, iii. 1--12, vii. 50--52, xix. 39; Martha and Mary, xi., xii. 1--3. We have found This does not prove that S. John is still with him, only that they were together when their common desire and expectation were fulfilled. Messias The Hebrew form of this name is used by S. John only, here and iv. 25. Elsewhere the LXX. translation, 'the Christ, ' is used. Here 'the' before 'Christ' should be omitted. 42. beheld Same word as in v. 36, implying a fixed earnest look; what follows shews that Christ's gaze penetrated to his heart and read his..

Book The Signs of Jesus Deity in the Gospel of John

Download or read book The Signs of Jesus Deity in the Gospel of John written by Solomon E. Fields and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do the miracles in the gospel of John really prove that Jesus of Nazareth is the son of God? In a carefully-researched study, a seasoned preacher and teacher examines the signs recorded in the gospel of John, explores whether they provide definitive proof of the deity of Jesus Christ, and analyzes the background of the audience during the time period of Jesus as well as that of the implied readers of the gospel. While explaining the text in John’s gospel, specifically the passages related to the traditional seven signs and the other nontraditional miraculous signs, Dr. Solomon Fields also analyzes the acceptance or lack of acceptance of the signs that John incorporates as reasons for believing in Jesus Christ and considers the post-resurrection perspective of the uniqueness of the signs within the early church and the present-day church in regard to the Christian faith—all while giving honor and glory to the Lord Jesus Christ so that souls may be saved and strengthened in the kingdom of God. The Signs of Jesus’ Deity in the Gospel of John provides a concise resource tool for those who minister through preaching, teaching, and leading bible studies around the signs within this important Christian teaching. “I thank Dr. Fields for presenting such a fresh view on the Signs (miracles) of Jesus. These Signs are a testament of the Divine powers of His attributes shown to man during His ministry here on earth. No one else within the historical times of man on earth could possibly exhibit these things except the Son of God. Being a student of history I appreciated the book’s use of the Old Testament to give strength to the acts rendered by our Lord Jesus Christ. The Old Testament connection expounds on the fact that the Word (Jesus) was preexistent from the beginning, as indicated in the first verse of the Book of John. The Word was God prior to the beginning and so in essence these powers of Signs were existing prior to the beginning. Again thank you Dr. Fields for this persuasive view on the Signs of Jesus, it is a good resource for study. I will recommend the book for my students.” —Dr. Bill Odems, Mount Olive Bible Institute “Whether you are a pastor, minister, or layperson, you will find this in-depth exposition of the miracles of Jesus, as chronicled in the Gospel of John, to be inspirational, insightful, and provocative. The meticulous examination and brilliant writing of Dr. Fields reinforce the truth regarding the deity of Jesus as The Christ.” —Cory S. Powell, Pastor, New Dimensions Tabernacle, Lubbock TX
