Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Another Book on the Theatre There is only one way in which parents may cure a child of this ambition to be a dramatic critic and that way is quickly to take him to New York and make him go to the theatre twice in succession. If, after this, the child is still alive, and still interested in the theatre, his parents may prepare themselves for the worst. As dutiful parents it then becomes their duty no longer to stand in the way Of their child's ambition and to give him the education meces sary to the work he has chosen as his life's career. This education essential to the popular and huan cial success of a modern dramatic critic - super imposes upon the aspirant a thorough understanding and appreciation of the following inviolable defini tions and rules: I. A dramatic criticism consists in so arranging the words and phrases, technique, nuance, brilliant, realism, play of ideas, com mercial, superficial, egregious, relentless, atmosphere symbolism, craftsmanship. Book The Classic Theatre

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eric Bentley
  • Publisher : Doubleday Books
  • Release : 1980
  • ISBN : 9780385093859
  • Pages : 404 pages

Download or read book The Classic Theatre written by Eric Bentley and published by Doubleday Books. This book was released on 1980 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The classical view, said Gilbert Murray, is "the view of a man whose training and tastes lead him to regard literature as one, and the great Greek and Roman writers as central forces in it." Now, though justice may have been done to Greek and Roman drama itself, many of us have only the haziest notion how the tradition continued. In performance it is possible that there was an unbroken tradition from ancient days to the commedia dell'arte in the sixteenth century. The commedia in turn laid the basis for modern comedy. Yet the dramas enacted by the Italian comedians remain unknown because they survived only in unreadable scenarios. For the present volume Leon Katz has made a conjectural reconstruction of the complete dialogue of one such scenario. While the players maintained the classical tradition before a popular audience, the writers revived Roman comedy for a courtly audience. Machiavelli's Mandrake is the crowning achievement of the revival. There was no Chinese wall between the popular and courtly traditions. Such a writer as Beolco belongs to both, and later the mingling of elements will be a matter of controversy. The greatest of the feuds was between Goldoni and Gozzi in the eighteenth century. The paradox is that, in retrospect, Gozzi, who championed the commedia, seems the more "literary" and "academic," while Goldoni, the supposed reformer, if not abolisher, of the commedia, can plausibly be presented by modern scholars as its restorer... The question: What is Theatre? arises at this point, and the best purpose this collection can serve is to make the reader ask such elemental questions. As in the engravings of Callot, we find in these texts the essence of dramatic art." --

Book The Insurgent Theatre Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Insurgent Theatre Classic Reprint written by Thomas H. Dickinson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Insurgent Theatre In this book it has been my purpose to treat the recent events in the non-commercial theatre as these refer to organization and management. I have purposely made no attempt to deal with the literary aspects of plays written for and produced by the so-called "insurgent" theatres. This matter would raise a large and interesting set of questions, which are not, in my judgment, while the plays are in a condition of development, ripe for present treatment. Those who are interested in play lists will find repertories of the theatres represented in this book in the Appendix. I wish to express my gratitude to the directors of theatres and companies for the courtesy with which they have provided me with information. I am under particular obligation to Miss Helen Arthur, Mr. Sheldon Cheney, Mr. Charles Recht, and Mr. G. P. Baker for general material, and to Mr. John B.Andrews for information as to child-labour laws as they apply to the theatre. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plays and the Theatre This is how Clayton Hamilton ends his chapter, What is a Play? It is a neat statement and extremely correct, but for us who are not necessarily familiar with the meaning Of such phrases as struggle between human Wills, motivated by emotion rather than by intellect, and expressed in terms Of Objective action, it may seem a little too pat. Let us, therefore, take this statement apart and examine the meaning of each phrase. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Nights: People and Ideas of the Theatre to-Day The first-nighter, as everybody knows, is a bored but witty person, with a black ribbon to his eye-glasses, who descends to his seat just before the curtain rises, and turns to survey the house ere he sits down. In New York, where theatres spring up overnight, he may be the large, red-necked man who supplied the concrete, but he is generally, at any rate, an insider, stirred by many things that pass the outsider by and inclined to be as concerned over the probable size of the audience on the third Tuesday as in the mere pleasure or nourishment to be had from the play. He is both spectator and participant, urging a new ship down the ways, and finds his interest divided perforce between the ship as a ship and the success of the launching. Author and players are waiting behind that closed curtain - be the play never so unimportant, there is mystery and excitement in the air.
