Book Annuity Markets

Download or read book Annuity Markets written by Edmund Cannon and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-10-02 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pension Crisis concerns the changing demographic profile of the economy: an increasing number of elderly persons supported by fewer young people. Governments around the world are responding to this impending crisis by shifting their pension policies away from pay-as-you-go systems towards individual savings schemes. These savings need to be converted into a pension at retirement, and annuities provide this function. This book is a comprehensive study of annuity markets. The book starts by outlining the context of public policy towards pensions, and explains the different types of annuities available, focusing on the UK which has the largest annuity market in the world. It examines how annuities are priced, and describes the techniques of mortality measurement. As a background, it provides a history of annuities, and the experience of annuity markets in a number of other countries. The book outlines the economic theory behind annuities, and explains how annuities insure consumers against longevity risks. It goes on to describes how annuities markets function: how they work, and whether they are efficient, leading onto a discussion of the annuity puzzle. The book concludes by discussing the regulatory framework, assets available to back annuity liabilities, and recent developments in annuity markets.

Book Perspectives on the Sources of Heterogeneity in Indian Industry

Download or read book Perspectives on the Sources of Heterogeneity in Indian Industry written by Somik V. Lall and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2015 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of variations in technical efficiency across four industrial sectors in India shows that managerial effectiveness significantly influences efficiency and that considerable benefits derive from location within established industrial clusters for particular industries. Liberalization and globalization are likely to bring significant productivity gains even in low-technology industries as managers gear up to meet the challenges of competition.Lall and Rodrigo examine technical efficiency variation across four industrial sectors in India, using a stochastic production frontier technique. The results are comparable to technical efficiency distribution patterns obtained in other countries. The authors examine heterogeneity in firm-level efficiency against internal, firm-level characteristics and against external characteristics (industry and location). The results suggest that managerial effectiveness significantly influences efficiency and that considerable benefits derive from location within established industrial clusters for particular industries. The methodology and findings indicate that the study of industry-specific technical efficiency patterns is a useful analytical tool for tracking domestic firms' response to liberalization and the advance of market forces. An important policy implication of Lall and Rodrigo's results: There is considerable room for efficiency gains through better organization and management of production processes and improved supply chain management, even in the highly organized corporate sector. These gains could be achieved by purely internal learning processes with no extra investment in physical plant or equipment, or with the help of outside consultants, or through business alliances with partners from industrial countries (a rising trend). The results also show that greater technical efficiency correlates with better energy use and higher investments in plant management. How firms can be induced to undertake such investments in the software of production is an important issue. Liberalization and globalization are likely to bring significant productivity gains even in low-technology industries as managers gear up to meet the challenges of competition. This paper - a product of Infrastructure and Environment, Development Research Group - is part of a larger effort in the group to understand the role of economic geography and urbanization in the development process.

Book Forced Saving

Download or read book Forced Saving written by Hazel Bateman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-11-20 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forced Saving, first published in 2001, offers an analysis of pension policy from an economic perspective. It begins with an overview of the problem of population ageing around the world, and then provides a framework within which policy responses may be consistently assessed. It focuses on the 'mandating' approach to retirement income policy, in which governments are compelling individuals - or their employers - to take on this responsibility, at least in part. The role of government becomes limited to one of mandating contributions from wages, along with regulating private fund managers to a greater or lesser extent. The authors explore the implications of introducing such a policy reform. They argue that while there is no universal agreement on the relative costs and benefits of this policy approach, there are often some advantages to moving at least some distance down the mandating path.

Book Ageing in Advanced Industrial States

Download or read book Ageing in Advanced Industrial States written by Shripad Tuljapurkar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-02 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population growth slowed across the world in the last decades of the 20th century, changing substantially our view of the future. The 21st century is likely to see the end to world population growth and become the century of population aging, marked by low fertility and ever-increasing life expectancy. These trends have prompted many to predict a gloomy future caused by an unprecedented economic burden of population aging. In response, industrialized nations will need to implement effective social and economic policies and programs. This is the final volume in a series of three. The papers included explore many examples and strengthen the basis for effective economic and social policies by investigating the economic, social, and demographic consequences of the transformations in the structures of population and family. These consequences include changes in economic behavior, both in labor and financial markets, and with regard to saving and consumption, and intergenerational transfers of money and care.
