Book Physical Chemistry Experimental and Theoretical

Download or read book Physical Chemistry Experimental and Theoretical written by G. Van Praagh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1950, this textbook was intended for school students with the aim of providing an introductory understanding of chemistry. The book introduces physical chemistry through multiple and diverse experiments; each experiment designed to reinforce a new topic and reflect theorems, approaches and historical development. Notably, the treatment throughout is from the point of view of the kinetic-molecular theory rather than that of the laws of thermodynamics, whilst emphasis is also placed upon physico-chemical phenomena and their significance in various branches of science, such as metallurgy, chemical syntheses and mineralogy. There are twelve chapters in total, with chapter titles ranging from 'Atoms and molecules' to 'Mass action and the ionic dissociation theory'. Various diagrams and plate sections are also included for reference. This book will be of value to chemistry students and scholars as well as those interested in the history of education.

Book Write Like a Chemist

    Book Details:

  • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book Write Like a Chemist written by Marin S. Robinson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Write Like a Chemist (2nd ed.) is a one-of-a-kind volume, written to serve as a textbook and resource for chemistry students, post-docs, faculty, and other chemistry professionals. The book focuses on four types of chemistry writing: the journal article, conference abstract, scientific poster, and research proposal. The book includes numerous excerpts from American Chemical Society (ACS) journal articles, ACS conference abstracts, and successful NSF proposals, all serving as excellent models of scientific writing. A model poster is also included. Write Like a Chemist's read-analyze-write approach underscores the importance of reading authentic texts, analyzing them, and using them as models for disciplinary writing. Analyses focus on conciseness, level of detail, and formality; organization; writing conventions; grammar and punctuation; and content expressed in prose and graphics. Exercises are included in each chapter. Together, these features turn the complex process of writing into graduated, achievable tasks. Additional features of the book include the formatting of figures, tables, citations, and references. ACS chemistry writing conventions, as advocated in the ACS Guide to Scholarly Communication (Banik et al., 2020), are modelled throughout. The final chapter provides language tips for "troublesome" aspects of writing. Separate companion websites include materials for students and faculty. For students, "writing on your own" guidance, a downloadable poster template, self-study exercises (with answer keys), and proofreading tips are included. For chemistry faculty, answer keys for book exercises, sample grading rubrics, and teaching tips are provided"--

Book Introduction to Relativistic Quantum Chemistry

Download or read book Introduction to Relativistic Quantum Chemistry written by Kenneth G. Dyall and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-19 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the essentials of relativistic effects in quantum chemistry, and a reference work that collects all the major developments in this field. It is designed for the graduate student and the computational chemist with a good background in nonrelativistic theory. In addition to explaining the necessary theory in detail, at a level that the non-expert and the student should readily be able to follow, the book discusses the implementation of the theory and practicalities of its use in calculations. After a brief introduction to classical relativity and electromagnetism, the Dirac equation is presented, and its symmetry, atomic solutions, and interpretation are explored. Four-component molecular methods are then developed: self-consistent field theory and the use of basis sets, double-group and time-reversal symmetry, correlation methods, molecular properties, and an overview of relativistic density functional theory. The emphases in this section are on the basics of relativistic theory and how relativistic theory differs from nonrelativistic theory. Approximate methods are treated next, starting with spin separation in the Dirac equation, and proceeding to the Foldy-Wouthuysen, Douglas-Kroll, and related transformations, Breit-Pauli and direct perturbation theory, regular approximations, matrix approximations, and pseudopotential and model potential methods. For each of these approximations, one-electron operators and many-electron methods are developed, spin-free and spin-orbit operators are presented, and the calculation of electric and magnetic properties is discussed. The treatment of spin-orbit effects with correlation rounds off the presentation of approximate methods. The book concludes with a discussion of the qualitative changes in the picture of structure and bonding that arise from the inclusion of relativity.

Book The Chemistry of Paper

Download or read book The Chemistry of Paper written by J C Roberts and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The manufacture of paper involves a large amount of chemistry, including carbohydrate chemistry, pigments and resins and colloid and surface chemistry, as well as elements of environmental and analytical chemistry. Providing an overview of the making of paper from a chemical perspective, this book deals with both the chemistry of paper as a material and the chemistry of its production. The book explores several chemical processes involved in the production of paper: the delignification of the wood fibres performed at elevated temperature and pressure, the bleaching of the cellulose-rich pulp using environmentally-friendly systems, the formation of the pulp into sheets of fibres strengthened by extensive inter-fibre hydrogen bonding, and finally the coating of the sheets in a manner appropriate to their end use. This book is an informative and entertaining overview for students and others who require an introduction to the chemistry of paper manufacture.
