Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Reports of President and the Treasurer of Harvard College, 1898-99 The new scheme permits a free option for Greek instead of the restricted Option which has been allowed at Harvard College for many years. Boys who are unable or unwilling to study Greek may present instead of that language a_ modern language, history, ancient or modern, or scientific subjects selected from a considerable group. Although nineteen points out of twenty-six appear to be required under the new scheme, (see the report of the Dean of the Faculty, p. 104) it will be observed that in making up the list of nineteen points various options are open to the candidate; so that the amount of the election is larger than at first sight appears. The most notice able peculiarity in the scheme is the absence of English from the list of advanced subjects. In this respect the Faculty acceded to the wishes of the English Department, which thought it wiser not to offer an advanced subject in English for possible competition with advanced Latin or Greek. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Reports of the President and the Treasurer of Harvard College, 1898-99 When the Overseers insisted that algebra and elementary history should be required subjects, they diminished sensibly the range of election of studies open to candidates for admission, and thereby impaired the best reliance of the Faculty for pre venting the total amount of work required of any individual candidate from being raised. The scheme finally adopted must, therefore, be very carefully administered for several years, in order to prevent an increase in the work required for admission. It was pointed out in the last report that almost every department represented among the subjects required for admission feels that it has gained something under the new definitions or under the new methods of util izing for admission the various permitted subjects. Whether these departmental convictions have been reconciled with the declared policy of the Faculty not to increase the requirements for admission remains to be seen. The new plan for admission will bring the College into closer connection with high schools throughout the country, and will tend to enlarge the election of studies in all secondary schools in consequence it will tend to make secondary educa tion less discursive for the individual pupil than it has been. The new requirements are not only perfectly adapted to the needs of the classical schools - indeed, are better adapted to the programmes of well-conducted classical schools than any requirements for admission to Harvard College have ever been. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Reports of the President and Treasurer of Harvard College, 1892-93 In looking back on his long and honorable career, it clearly appears that the great service which he rendered to the Uni versity was in so conducting the services of Appleton Chapel for twenty-one years that, when he retired from the Plummer Professorship, it was natural and easy that he should be suc ceeded, not by a single preacher, but by a Board of Preachers of different denominations. His religious opinions and the whole spirit of his professional labors and of his life commended him to various denominations of Christians. He was welcome in the pulpits of many denominations, and by exchanges he brought ministers of different creeds into the College pulpit. His whole administration of the College Chapel broadened the foundations of the religious work of the University. The temper of his mind was constructive, affirmative, and compre hensive; and his daily walk and conversation commanded the respect and affection of all sorts'of men. When he began his ministrations in the College Chapel, it was occupied on Sundays by what was practically a small Unitarian church, consisting partly of members of the University, and partly of other residents of Cambridge; and at morning prayers the attend ance of the students was compulsory. When he resigned, the only policy with regard to Appleton Chapel, consistent with the work Dr. Peabody had done there, was to make it the centre of religious activities embracing all denominations and the whole University, and to abandon the compulsory attendance of students at religious exercises. It is unnecessary to say, therefore, that Dr. Peabody was warmly in favor of the changes in the administration of Appleton Chapel which ensued upon his retirement from the Plummer Professorship. The existence of a distinct church occupying the College Chapel, and connected with the Unitarian denomination, covers a period of sixty-seven years namely, from 1814 to 1881; but during the last twenty-one years of this period Dr. Peabody was preparing the way for a more comprehensive policy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Reports of the President and Treasurer of Harvard College: 1899-1900 To the Board of Overseers: - The President of the University has the honor to submit the following report for the academic year 1899 - 1900, - namely, from September 28, 1899, to September 27, 1900. Charles Franklin Dunbar, Professor of Political Economy, died on the 29th of January, 1900, in the seventieth year of his age. Professor Dunbar was the first professor to be appointed in the University for political economy exclusively. He was Dean of the College Faculty from 1876 to 1882, and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences from its creation in 1890 to 1895. As an administrative officer he manifested a remarkable sagacity, and commanded the complete respect of his associates and subordinates; but his principal service to the University was the creation of a highly organized department of political economy. When first appointed he was the sole teacher of the subject; at his death there were in the department three full professors, one assistant professor, and three instructors. At the beginning of his service political economy could be studied by Juniors and Seniors only, and by them but briefly; at the end it was open to Freshmen, and could be pursued in every college year through a series of graded courses. To the numerous discussions which took place in the College Faculty between 1871 and 1900 Professor Dunbar contributed weightily, though not copiously. He was Editor of the Journal of Economics published by the University from its beginning in October 1886 until 1896.. He devised its methods, and watched its progress with the keenest interest. His own published writings gave authority to his teaching, and added to the influence of the University in the country at large. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Reports of the President and the Treasurer of Harvard College, 1897-98 In all the sports it is very desirable to develop some agreeable, local competition, so that a large number of crews and teams may always be in practice. Thus, two or three more clubs for rowing, like the Weld Club with its 413 members. Are needed, in order to put a large number of crews on the river and develop a wholesome and interesting competition at home. The large income derived from the principal foot-ball games has a tendency to encourage extravagance in all the sports; but a considerable portion of the gate-money has been in recent years devoted to the permanent improvement of fields and buildings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Reports of the President and Treasurer of Harvard College, 1895-96 Another result of the system which has its importance is the strong interest in the religious methods of the University excited in the preachers themselves. The preachers who have come from a distance and lived in Wadsworth House for six weeks in the year, separated from their ordinary parish work, have been, if possible, more impressed with the happy results of the voluntary religious method, than those who, living in the immediate vicinity, have returned every day to their families and their parishes. An exception in regard to this statement should, however, be recorded in the case of one deeply-lamented Preacher to the University who lived near by, Phillips Brooks, who as an Overseer came reluctantly to the adoption of the voluntary method, but subsequently became its most convinced advocate. The Choir, made up of University students and Cambridge school boys, has undoubtedly helped to maintain and increase the general interest in the Chapel services. The music has grown steadily better and better ever since the boys' choir was first instituted; and many persons greatly enjoy the musical part of the services. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 922 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Reports of the President and Treasurer of Harvard College, 1889-90 The President and Fellows greatly regretted the with drawal of Mr. Alexander Agassiz from their board at the end of the year. Mr. Agassiz has, however, served ten years as a Fellow - namely, from 1878 to 1884 and from 1886 to 1890 beside giving the University invaluable service as Curator of the Museum of Comparative Zoology since 1875; so that the President and Fellows could only accede to his wish when the pressure of other cares made it necessary for him to diminish his work for the University. Two members of the Board of Preachers withdrew at the end of the year, Rev. George A. Gordon of the Old South Church, Boston, and Rev. Theodore Chickering vvil liams of All Souls Church, New York City. Mr. Gordon began his service with the first Board of Preachers in Sep tember, 1886; Mr. Williams had served two years; both gave time and strength to the work with generosity, and with strong faith in the new method of administering the University Chapel. Their places were filled by the election of Rev. Brooke Herford of the Arlington Street Church, Boston, and Rev. Henry Van Dyke, D.D., of the Brick Church, Fifth Avenue, New York. For the year 1890-91 the Board is composed of one Unitarian, two Episcopalians, one Congregationalist, and one Presbyterian. Only two out of the five Preachers are graduates of the University. The interest of the students, and of the community about the University, in the Chapel services increases from year to year.
