Book Creating Systems of Innovation in Africa

Download or read book Creating Systems of Innovation in Africa written by Mammo Muchie and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2013-01-29 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most popularised concept in the economics of innovation literature has been the national system of innovation (NSI). It was in the late 1980s that the concept that Frederik List coined as the National Political Economy of Production took off again with different thinkers writing about the peculiarities and distinctions of the Japanese, American, British, German, East Asian Tigers and other varieties of system construction. Freeman defines National System of Innovation as the network of institutions in the public and private sectors whose activities and interactions initiate, import, modify and diff use new technologies. Richard Nelson defines it as a set of institutions whose interactions determine the innovative performance of national firms. Lundvall defines the system of innovation as the elements and relationships which interact in the production, diffusion and use of new and economically useful knowledge and are either located within or rooted inside the borders of a nation state. The normative assumption is that those nations that succeeded in building economic strength relied on the science, engineering, technology and innovation capability that made them to achieve an innovation advantage to put them ahead in the world, acquiring national or regional economic leadership as the case may be depending on what level of analyses is selected to look at particular failure, success or progress they made. In this volume we have a glimpse of how in different African economies from Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria specific cases have been taken to explore how systems of innovation is evolving.

Book Ghana

  • Author : Shiyan Chao
  • Publisher : World Bank Publications
  • Release : 1999-01-01

Download or read book Ghana written by Shiyan Chao and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ghana is an extremely diverse country-ethnically, culturally, ecologically, and economically. Women and men play different roles, undertake different activities, and face different constraints. Gender-based differences in their activities and practices result from... existing gender inequalities. Because these gender differences are often fundamental to men and women's livelihoods, understanding them is essential to designing policies and projects that will effectively reduce gender inequalities and promote sustainable development." A growing body of literature indicates that reducing gender inequalities and increasing women's access to productive resources greatly improves both welfare and economic productivity. Despite recent gains in some areas, significant gender inequalities continue to limit women's capabilities and constrain their ability to participate in and contribute to Ghana's economy. This report examines key gender inequalities and gender-based differences in economic activities, opportunities, and constraints, focusing on two broad areas: the links between gender, economic productivity and poverty, and the development of human capital. It is the result of the World Bank's recognition of the need to understand gender issues in order to develop strategies to deal with them and support the government's program to develop a gender strategy. In addition, it is intended to further the dialogue between the Bank, the government, other donors, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) on how to reduce or eliminate gender-specific constraints on economic development in Ghana.

Book Decentralisation Revenue Mobilization and Development in Ghana

Download or read book Decentralisation Revenue Mobilization and Development in Ghana written by Prosper Bazaanah and published by Prosper Bazaanah. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines Ghana's policy and practice of fiscal decentralization and explores opportunities for generating resources locally to promote development. Gomoa West District, a sub-national government structure of the Central Region was used as the social laboratory. The book shows that some of the districts, especially rural districts are financially under-resourced and therefore overly depend on central government transfers which is often erratic and fraught with management problems. Opportunities exist in such districts to expanding tax coverage and generating revenue locally. However, some of the districts are faced with problems of revenue administration including logistical challenges, human resources, low motivation and revenue leakages. Concerted efforts are needed in area of tax administration, capacity building, law enforcement and review of indicators in the formula for allocating the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to the districts in Ghana. The book indicates that such review should be pro-poor based and geared towards addressing development gaps among the districts in Ghana, particularly, development of resource-poor districts.
