Book Scouting in Hong Kong 1910 2010

Download or read book Scouting in Hong Kong 1910 2010 written by Paul Kua and published by Propius Press. This book was released on 2024-05-05 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scouting in Hong Kong, 1910-2010: Citizenship training in colonial and Chinese contexts, originally issued in 2011 as a hardcover book when the Hong Kong youth movement celebrated its centenary, is republished with revisions in 2024 as a paperback and an ebook. The narratives and analyses developed here covered the "what, how, when and who" and the "why and so what" of the development of the Hong Kong Scout Movement from 1910 to 2010, using a large volume of primary sources. It tells the story of Hong Kong Scouting based the theme of citizenship training for youth and its defining categories, esp. that of race, class, gender, and age, both colonial and post'colonial. The book is also richly illustrated with interesting and instructive images, many of which came from the Hong Kong Scout Archives. The study, originally based on a Ph. D. dissertation, is not meant to be an institutional hagiography. Instead, it is a critical study aimed at both general readers and readers with more specific interests, and should enrich their understanding of the histories of Scouting, youth, citizenship education, the colonies, the British Empire, and decolonization, China and Hong Kong.

Book Hong Kong Public and Squatter Housing

Download or read book Hong Kong Public and Squatter Housing written by Alan Smart and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hong Kong Public and Squatter Housing: Geopolitics and Informality, 1963–1985, Alan Smart and Fung Chi Keung Charles trace two decades of development of squatting in Hong Kong. The authors reconstruct the government policy on squatting through both ethnographic and archival research. The book sheds new light on the consequences of various attempts to control encroachment on scarce urban space. It argues that intersecting policy agendas resulted in decisions that were often not desired, but which emerged as practical solutions from prior failures. The authors address the challenges of explaining confidential policy decisions and offer new approaches applicable in other contexts. Overall, Smart and Fung make an important contribution to the understanding of how public housing and squatting interacted in influential ways that have been poorly understood and offer new perspectives on the challenges of urban governance and housing problems. “The definitive history of how resettlement policies evolved as the squatter population swelled and as London and Beijing moved closer to signing the 1984 Sino-British Declaration. A masterful combination of theorizing and documentary sleuthing, a landmark in contemporary debates over the optimal responses to the formalization of informal property.” —Deborah Davis, Yale University “Smart and Fung offer a fresh and thought-provoking analysis of the changing state-society relations in the postwar decades by unravelling the complexities of Hong Kong’s urban landscape through their critical analysis of the question of informality and the issue of squatting.” —Lui Tai-Lok, Education University of Hong Kong “Employing ethnography and combing through archives, Smart and Fung uncover how the British formalized squatter housing. Highlighting questions of sociopolitical and historical change by analyzing bureaucratic and geopolitical forces—a fascinating project delving into the nature of colonial rule, immigrant resilience, and political economic structures. A major contribution to evidence-based settler colonial studies.” —Setha Low, City University of New York

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hong Kong Management and Labour argues, in a series of previously unpublished, completely up-to-date contributions, that economic and social change has been ongoing in Hong Kong for many years, and political change is perhaps less important for labour and management in the region. This book is written bearing in mind the concerns of policy makers and managers - particularly human resource managers, and those interested in labour relations, trade unions, labour markets and law, and comparative management.

Book The Making of an Alienated Generation

Download or read book The Making of an Alienated Generation written by Sai-Wing Leung and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this volume examines the political apathy of the Hong Kong Chinese, with a particular focus on children in secondary schools. While most previous studies have been of adults, Leung’s approach exposes a generation who are politically uninvolved and disenchanted. He examines teacher-student encounters in a depoliticized school context and through a curriculum in which explicit political content is absent. The study throws light both on Chinese youths and the interaction of older and younger generations, and its macroscopic implications are distinctly ominous, suggesting trouble ahead for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
